1 out of 5 eggswould not work properly win xp

Pros: easy to plug in slot

Cons: The included driver cd messed up ethernet controller card and I had to buy another, could not fix current one. It would not boot with this card and dvd writer installed. After 4 days of trying to fix drivers and get it to work I give up. Wasted 14.99 and the e mail from support to update bios etc did not help.

3 out of 5 eggsWrong description

Pros: It probably will do what I need it for. The item is advertised as a SATA controller card with 2 internal + 1 external ports. It only has one internal SATA connection so.....it does not work for ant possible RAID.

Cons: The item is advertised as a SATA controller card with 2 internal + 1 external ports. It only has one internal SATA connection so.....it does not work for ant possible RAID. In the instructions it says it would work for RAID but....unsure if the other SATA for RAID could come from the motherboard (dumb). Anyway....I did not get what I was supposed to get.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDied after one year....

Pros: Worked for about 12 months.

Cons: Installation was rough, did not find drivers (Windows Vista 32-bit). After that, worked well for about 1 year then intermittently after that. Finally replaced with Rosewill RC-210 after 16 months.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGood but "some assembly 'may be' required"

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Did not come with the latest firmware version already loaded.
Also, the internal SATA port does not include the clip mechanism to prevent the SATA cable from working itself loose.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this card to connect an aging MSI-7142 K8MM-V motherboard running WinXP to an ADATA SP900 Premier Pro 128GB SSD. This motherboard does have two SATA 1 ports but it would not recognize this SSD. Also, I don't know if this matters, but I do have the latest BIOS version.

First, actually, I'd give this thing 4 eggs, but I figured I would post this with 5 to make my review more visible and therefore more helpful to others.

It's important to remember that if you are using this to hook up to an SSD to Windows XP, you will probably need to make some tweaks to XP. Do a search for "SSD Tweaker", its free but you can donate if you'd like.

Second, you may need to upgrade the firmware on the card. Go to www.siliconimage.com
Click on the Support Library link at the top of the screen.
In the dropdown menu, select "SIL3512-PCI to 2 Port SATA150". Even though we're talking about the single port model, this is the correct selection.
Then scroll down a bit to find the latest BIOS update, which should be the first that you run in to. At this writing, its 4.5.02. The update function is found under a tab in the device properties window (NEVER seen this before, very cool idea). Although the update tab did not appear for me until I had a drive connected to the card (strange). My computer froze a couple of times while working with this card, but once I updated the firmware, have not had a problem since. Complete instructions can be found in other links on this same page.

3 out of 5 eggsSATA I PCI card--So-So

Pros: Cheap. INstall was simple.

Cons: Slow when used as a boot drive for Windows XP according to Si Software Sandra benchmark. Fast when not boot drive.

Other Thoughts: Install was easy. Not sure why I got a 52Mbps benchmark on Si Software Sandra when the drive was not the boot drive, and got a 25.5 Mbps benchmark when it was the boot drive. There are no updated drivers, and havn't found much information on the web about this card.

1 out of 5 eggsboot lock

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Does not work with newer HD

Other Thoughts: This card does not work with newer drives connected to the internal SATA port (some 2T, all 3T and 4T). It gets hung up and does not boot.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

This is a SATA I PCI slot card. It will work with large hard drives (2 TB+), however, due to the nature of the old PCI motherboard and Windows versions you are running, you need to partition the large hard drive into smaller partitions using the Computer Managment application.

5 out of 5 eggsI'm buying another one

Pros: I used the first one I got to give an old MSI motherboard the ability to boot from a SATA drive, the board did have SATA but VIA and Non-Bootable, no Boot BIOS. I bought a SiL 3x12 (?) based chipset for this same system, over 5 years ago, and that controller lasted over four years, and I am sure it was one of these, SYBA. So I'm good, I may buy several mroe of these, I have many MBs that have no SATA but are good boards nevertheless, and they all need SATA Boot ability.

Cons: that they only last 4 and a half years, maybe more. But that is not a bad thing, most cards do not last that long.

Other Thoughts: These things are the only decently priced option for SATAless Motherboards. I've bought other, more expensive cards that had less fucntionality and lasted only a year. For some reason I have had very good luck with this make of Sata cards, and not having the full 3GB/s SATA speed is not a problem, one and a half is good enough to boot an OS, I've even had Windows 7 running from one of these. The Drivers are usually built in. I've also used these for Ubuntu and for OSx86 projects.

5 out of 5 eggsPlug and play with Ubuntu Linux

Pros: Good value, works right out of the box without driver install. Recognized immediately by my Ubuntu server based file server. It's based on an old PC which didn't have native SATA ports. Added this for internal SATA and external eSATA. Both are working great.

Cons: None. Works great.

Other Thoughts: Confirmed working with ubuntu server 10.10 but I suspect newer versions are good too. Its recognized in the bios so you're likely good with any OS.
