Best inexpensive option for PCI or PCI-X Port multiplier capability
Reviewed By: AF Geek on 1/22/2010
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Sil3124 port multiplier capable chipset. Backward compatible with PCI 2.3 (runs at 66 Mhz). Has two eSATA ports and two internal SATA ports; this is hard to find in a PCI compatible card. Chipset is also capable of hot swapping drives from both the internal and eSATA ports.
Works flawlessly with Windows Home Server (Server 2003) and drivers are installed from Windows Update with no intervention. Installed the card, booted the machine, OS detected the card and installed the drivers. Up and going within 5 minutes.
Throughput speeds seem OK with both the singularly attached drives and the port multiplier. Typical speeds seen from all drives, both attached to the SYBA card and the motherboard SATA ports is around 90 MB/sec as reported by WHS Disk Management add-in.
Cons: Silicon Image drivers do not integrate with Windows Safely Remove Hardware tray application for hot swapping. This is overcome by using the free HotSwap 5.0 tool from here: http://mt-naka.com/hotswap/index_enu.htm . This tool ends up being a second icon in the tray to manage the hot swap capability.
Not really a con, but a consideration; my case is a Chenbro ES34069 mini-itx case and it is TIGHT! I had to find very short 90 degree angle connector SATA cables to connect to the card’s internal SATA ports to allow it to fit in the case. If you have a typical micro-ATX or standard ATX case, this is no problem.
Other Thoughts: After searching with no success for a half-height, 2 internal SATA and 2 eSATA port, PCI 2.3 compatible, port multiplier capable card (very detailed need due to my specific build), I did some further research and found PCI-X cards are backward compatible to PCI 2.3 spec.
I am using the card in JBOD mode, not RAID, so I cannot comment on that, although keep in mind it is software RAID.
Windows Home Server with following specs: - Chenbro ES34069 case (modded for eSATA ports) - Chenbro PCI riser card - Intel 945GCLF2 Atom 330 Mini ITX Motherboard - GeIL 2GB DDR2 800 SDRAM - SYBA SD-PCXSA2-2E2R PCI-X SATA II RAID Card (used in PCI 2.3 mode) - 2x Samsung Spinpoint HD103UJ 1TB HD (motherboard SATA ports) - 2x Samsung EcoGreen F2 HD154UI 1.5TB HD (Syba card) - Rosewill RSV-S4-X 4 Bay SATA to eSATA (Port Multiplier) (SYBA card) -- 1x WD 10EACS 1TB GreenDrive -- 1x WD 10EARS 1TB GreenDrive - eSATA enternal enclosure with 1x WD 10EACS 1TB GreenDrive (SYBA card)

Works for Me
Reviewed By: Macnbaish on 4/19/2009
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Good speed, easy setup, cheap price, as advertised.
Cons: None so far.
Other Thoughts: Wanted to chime in that this worked fine for me. Using it in a HP ML350 G2 series server. BIOS immediately recognized it, and was able to set up new WD Caviar Black 1TB drives as a concatenated (spanned) volume.
I did have some issues with boot order, I had to move this into the PCI slot underneath my pre-existing RAID controller that hosts the OS volume. Apparently this motherboard cares about the order of the PCI slots. Once that was done it booted right up, I installed the drivers in windows.. and it was all done.
Benchmarked at 80 MB\Sec average by HDTune. Very pleased.
