4 out of 5 eggsOK on xpsp3 32b

Pros: Just needed to add 2 drives to my xpsp3 32b machine (didn't need raid). Card came with sataraid5 bios. Windows loaded raid drivers and the 2 already formatted drives were recognized. Looks like the raid drivers default to single drive operation it you don't go in and configure the raid. Not sure about Vista or 7.

Cons: Some trouble with SMART. Only the drive on the second port reports SMART data - maybe it is the application (Crystal drive info). I got around this by putting my CD on the first port and the HD on the second port.

Other Thoughts: I ended up flashing the bios with the latest base bios through Windows to see if I could get SMART working on both of the ports. Didn't help.

The wreck they call "documentation" on these cards can't be helping sales.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Should have a higher speed ceiling thanks to the express slot; simple install; paid less than sticker price.

Cons: Not quite as good as my on-board RAID host; not sure how to run two drives w/o RAID from it.

Other Thoughts: You may wonder why I'd list the inability to run 2 drives separate vs in RAID in the cons. Since the speed wasn't as good as my on-board, I figured I'd use the extra slot for the 2 filled on my mobo, but it doesn't work that way. If it does, I haven't found much info on it, and I don't have time or space to try.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a SATA II card

Pros: cheap

Cons: It ain't a SATA II card. I benched the hell out of it with a OCZ Vertex LE SSD and never got past 130MB/s. Put the SSD on my onboard SATA and it performed as expected. Once I even got a bizzare IO error; didn't like that AT ALL. Flashed it with a couple of firmwares from Silicon Image's website (and you should if you buy it, bc the stock firmware is from 2006) - didn't change a thing. Don't buy if you're looking for a cheap SATA II card because again, it ain't SATA II.

Other Thoughts: I don't know if the whole sil3132 chipset is to blame, but I'm not happy about these guys one bit. I've wasted my time and I feel like I shouldn't buy any SATA controller based on Silicon Image; unfortunately all the cheapies seem to be based off them...

4 out of 5 eggsNo S.M.A.R.T. support

Pros: Cheap, can do RAID (although I don't use it).

Cons: No S.M.A.R.T. support.

Other Thoughts: I use this in a WHS machine so don't need RAID. It has been working fine so far, with the base (non-RAID) BIOS and drivers from Sil's website (http://www.siliconimage.com/products/product.aspx?pid=32). However, the card does not support S.M.A.R.T., which is a big drawback for me. Not sure whether it's the drivers or the hardware. Not worth returning, though.

1 out of 5 eggsEarly Failure

Pros: Worked fine for 3 weeks

Cons: Failed at end of 3rd week

Other Thoughts: I've got several other SiI3132 cards from other manufacturers. They have all been working fine for 1-2 years.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as Intended

Pros: Cable was included

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought it to add more HDDs to my system, as all four ports on my mobo were in use. It serves this purpose perfectly.
