1 out of 5 eggsGigantic Disappointment

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: It installed fine.

Cons: My Samsung EVO 840 (a 6GB SATA III drive) is plugged in to a SATA II port. According to Samsung Magician, it was getting 281 MB/s for reads and 269 MB/s for writes. The Samsung software noted that it was only operating at a maximum of 3Gb/s on the SATA 2 port, and that performance could be increased by moving it to a SATA III controller. So I bought this card. After the install, I moved it to the SYBA controller and speeds DROPPED to 203 MB/s read and 177 MB/s write. All Samsung optimizations were applied, ACHI was enabled in BIOS, etc. The last thing I was expecting was a 30% drop in performance from my onboard SATA II controller. The drivers shipped with the card are the same as what are available on the manufacturer web site, and they're over 4 years old. No updates were available.

Other Thoughts: The motherboard I paired this card with is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359). I thought I might be able to try a different card with a Marvell chipset, but there are a lot of reviews on another major web site by people who purchased SYBA (IO Crest) SATA III cards with that chipset and are also getting less than SATA II performance.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for the issues you've experienced with this PCIe Card.

We have mentioned before to our customers that this is a common issue with the SY-PEX40039. Our advise is to uninstall the drivers and run on the generic Microsoft AHCI drivers that come after. You should notice a boost in sequential read/write speeds afterwards.

Please contact our support team if you need further assistance by emailing support@sybausa.com.

Our technical support team is available to help 9am-5pm M-F. Feel free to contact us during those business hours.

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Card

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: Works with Ubuntu and Windows 10.
Standard drivers are fine, no extra software needed.
Can boot from controller.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Added ports to my GA-H81M-H.
I'm running Ubuntu server Raid 5 with 4 drives.
Needed an extra port for my boot drive.
Also bootable with 970A-G43.

2 out of 5 eggsDissapointed

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: Install was reasonably simple.

Cons: Failed to worked as expected

Other Thoughts: I bought this thinking it would do what really defies logic, upgrade an older PC to SATA 3 SSD performance for the cost of a cheap card. I installed it in my Dell Optiplex 980 i5 and it did boot to the OS, but when I ran Crystal Disk benchmark there was no increase in performance at all. I tried to contact support, but SYBA doesn't post a phone number and they seem to ignore email contacts. No patience with a company offering no phone support at all.

5 out of 5 eggsMy experience with an SY-PEX40039

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: My trusty old Asus P5Q Pro is now my HTPC motherboard, and I wanted to see if I could get some more speed out of the Crucial CT128M4SSD2 that I use as the OS drive. Using Crystal Disk Mark, the sequential speeds with the standard SATA port were 267/185.
I installed the Syba controller in a PCI-E X1 slot at first, Windows 10 installed a driver, and I then shut it down and moved the SATA cable to the card; as expected, when installed in an X1 slot, it had significantly slower speeds than the board's own SATA port - 194/158. I then installed it in the open X16 PCI-E slot, and repeated the test, which resulted in 380/197. I was hoping for a little more speed than that, but that isn't too bad, and it is a significant improvement over the board's own SATA port.

Cons: I went to Syba's site and downloaded the latest driver and installed it, but it actually reduced the read/write speeds compared to the default Windows 10 driver, so I rolled back to that.

Other Thoughts: I would only recommend it for use with a primary drive if you have a free PCI-E slot that is greater than a 1X.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks in win 10

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: No additional power required, works fine with win 10 64.

Cons: I don't see any at this point other than it messes up some of the existing drive letters/paths but easily straightened out after the fact, no biggie.

Other Thoughts: Moving 4.36GB from 4 TB to a 4TB drive on the controller card it started at 170MBs and finished at 138MBs just using whatever win 10 drivers MS installed, good enough. On the other port is a sony dvd drive, now the case is full with no more room for anymore drives, 8 drives ttl with the card installed.

Ps, on an old 790x-ud4 mobo.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking nicely with my additional SATA internal HDs

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: I've ran out of SATA ports on my mobo and this is serving my needs. I don't use it for my main drive and don't raid with it.

Cons: None for my purposes.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap and effective way to get 2 additional SATA III ports

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: -Works with both windows 7 and 10 with the boot drive connected to it
-Gets about 400 MB/s data transfer rate with a SSD connected to it as all of my MB ports were used for a raid array

Cons: -None that I can think of

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SATA 3 solution for older AM2+ system

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: Cheap, easy option to add SATA III to my older AM2+ motherboard. Using it with a Samsung SSD, and the drive test show it is definitely faster than the on-board SATA II ports.

Cons: Only thing I can think of that could be improved would be a pin header for a drive activity led.

Other Thoughts: I installed it in my system and booted the OS before switching the SATA cable as others also suggested. Windows 10 installed the driver automatically. Samsung Magician recognized the presence of the new SATA III port and recommended I move the drive to it. Shut it down, moved the cable to the new controller, Windows booted up just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great in N54L Microserver and FreeNAS

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: Plug and Play in my 2 x HP N54L Microservers with FreeNAS 9.3. Very pleasantly surprised that they worked out of the box...no drivers to install, no drama! Plug into motherboard, connect SATA cables, and Voila, instant HDD action! Being ultra affordable on sale was a real bonus.

Cons: None. Bought 2 and they worked so well that I want to buy more but don't have anything to put them in.

Other Thoughts: Comes with SATA cable, regular bracket and low profile bracket.

2 out of 5 eggsDid not work in my system

This review is from: SYBA SY-PEX40039 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: -cheap

Cons: I could not get this to work in my system. I changed many hard drive settings in the BIOS while it was connected to a HDD but nothing made it work. With most settings it just didn't recognize the HDD but with one in particular I couldn't even boot up the PC.

Other Thoughts: A lot of people have issues with these devices so I'm guessing its just the nature of the device.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for the issues you've experienced with this PCIe card.

You may need to use the generic Microsoft Standard AHCI driver that comes after uninstalling the current drivers you have on it.
