1 out of 5 eggsUseless

Pros: None

Cons: This was purchased to operate in a legacy Windows 2000 machine. The Newegg page and the Syba page claim that it works on Windows 2000. Yet there were no drivers on the supplied installation disk, none on the Syba (IOCrest) website, and none in Windows 2000 SP4. When I emailed product support, I was told "For systems earlier than Windows Server 2003 the generic device drivers of Windows will need to be installed." When I asked where such drivers are to be found and what their names are, I received no response.

Other Thoughts: If Syba sales material is incorrect on this product, then ...

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems

Pros: Price

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've owned two of these for over a year now running 24/7. I have yet to have an issue. I can't speak much to the speed other than to say that my 7200 RPM drives are running at the same speed as the on board SATA.

Great value. Would by again.

2 out of 5 eggsIntermittant problems

Pros: Price per sata port was good. Speed is OK, considering it uses an v2 x1 PCIe slot.

Cons: It took a couple tries to get it to sync at PCIe v2 speeds. There are other weird stability or compatibility problems.

Other Thoughts: I purchased one of these from Newegg and a second from a different online store. They caused intermittant problems mounting disks..

I bought two of these to get extra ports for raid using btrfs. Putting either of the cards into my system causes intermittent filesystem mounting failures at boot time. The cards cause all ahci controllers in the system to misbehave, not just the one on the card. When I remove the cards, the other ahci devices work fine again. Also, changing the bios to NOT use ahci allows the motherboard controllers to work, but anything plugged into the sata cards are still flakey. Also, the cards don't work with my optical drives.
These problems happened when one or both of the cards were plugged in.

Because of the intermittent nature of the problem, it took a few days to narrow the problem down to these cards.

Overall, a dissapointing purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat purchase

Pros: Was on sale + a few newegg point made it too good to pass up. Also the reviews were very positive (not true of all SYBA items). Adding this made the speed of my 2 SSDs absolutely fantastic. It does what SATA III is supposed to do. Changed my data drive from the onboard SATA II to the card and it worked. Takes 1-2 seconds to load a program and data.

Cons: User manual is rather cryptic. Wasn't any help when I switched the Windows 7 SSD to the card and it wouldn't boot. Took me a while to figure out that I had to go into BIOS and change the boot order.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine.

Pros: No complaints here. Works as advertised.

Cons: Uhhh...I dunno, I'd like a wireless controler with 6.0gbps speed?

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as states

Pros: I have used this card in now 2 old 1st gen i7 x58 mobo builds one evga and one ecs. It has worked great and there are 3 options for drivers. Windows will install one, I've comes on the cd with the card and one on there website the ssd I got worked with all of them but I didn't compare speeds. Card fits in socket just fine and stays in perfectly when secured properly as its intended.

Cons: I am not 100% sure whether its the controller card, the ssd or my mobo but I am not quite getting every bit of read speed I could from my ssd. I am getting in excess of spec on the write speeds so I got that going for me which is nice. I also have an older comp so its hard to say, still getting a huge speed increase over sata 2 and old hdd. What can you ask for for the price? And this 15$ upgrade us keeping me from spending a thousand on a new setup.

5 out of 5 eggsSYBA SY-PEX40039 Review

Pros: This little gadget works just fine (and exactly according to specs), provided that you give it what it needs. For optimal SATA III operation, that means:

(1) a PCI-E Gen 2 slot (i.e. one supporting 500MB/s transfer speeds)
(2) SATA III rated data cable(s) (two of which are included in the package)
(3) the appropriate Windows, MAC, or Linux driver (all found on the included CD)

Note: this device is fully backward compatible with SATA II and SATA I on either Gen 1 or Gen 2 PCI-E slots.

Again, everything you will need (other than a PCI-E slot) is included in the package, even an optional low-profile I/O plate.

Cons: I have found none.

Other Thoughts: I tested this device on a SATA II BIOSTAR AM2+ motherboard, a board which lacks native SATA III support, but does provide a Gen 2 PCI-E x16 slot and one Gen 2 PCI-E x1 slot. (It's second PCI-E x1 slot supports only Gen 1). Note: many SATA II boards out there boast a Gen 2 PCI-E x16 slot (for video), but only provide Gen 1 PCI-E x1 slots. Moreover, some boards are known to have issues with their PCI-E Gen 2 slots, when multiple PCI-E 2.0 adapter cards are installed, causing one of the slots to downgrade to Gen 1 speed (250MB/s). (So, do your homework.)

Fortunately, this device senses and alerts you (at boot time) to the protocol (Gen 1 or Gen 2) under which it is running. If it is only running at Gen 1 speed (250MB/s), you'll never achieve the Gen 2 speed (500MB/s) it is capable of. In fact, if a good SATA III SSD capable of 400MB/s-plus r/w speeds is attached to this device running at Gen 1 speed, the same SDD will operate at less than SATA II speeds. (Heads-up to the posters, "Vladimir V", "Terry W", and others.)

At any rate, my experiments with a Kingston 60GB SDD show the following "HD Tune 4.0" benchmark results:
(1) SDD attached to native SATA II port (on the BIOSTAR AM2+ board): transfer speed = 206 MB/s (steady)
(2) SDD attached to this device in the Gen 2 PCI-E x1 slot (on the BIOSTAR AM2+ board): transfer speed = 305 MB/s (steady)
(3) SDD attached to native SATA III port (on a much faster AM3+ system): transfer speed = 335 MB/s (steady)

Conclusions:
(1) Slightly shy of native SATA III speeds, but 33% greater than native SATA II speeds.
(2) Your transfer speeds may vary, depending on the speed of your motherboard's chipset.
(3) If this device doesn't work as described, the problem probably lies in either YOU, your motherboard, or both!
