4 out of 5 eggsUpdate On Previous review

Pros: See Previous Review for most of the pros. I can add that Samsung Magician software works fine using this controller.

Cons: This would have been fairly straight forward with good documentation, so I stand by docking the product an egg for poor instructions.

Other Thoughts: I ended up installing the driver for the controller, even though windows can see the drive without it. With the default driver, windows saw my boot disk as a removable drive, like a thumb drive, and I was worried that I would someday eject it by mistake.

To install the driver, browse provided CD, run X:\Marvell\91XX_92XX Setup\drvSetup.exe. Once the driver is installed and following a reboot or two, you will see the controller in Device Manager - it won't show up until you install the driver.

To get windows to recognize the drive as a fixed disk, I had to change the properties for the controller to disable "safely remove disk", followed by a reboot. I don't really care about the esata ports, but I suspect that I this setting means that I cannot hot plug them if I ever use them.

4 out of 5 eggsFairly Painless, Worked for me

Pros: Installed without needing the enclosed driver disk on windows 7.
Comes with 2 SATA cables and half-height bracket.
Uses 2x pcie lanes for more available bandwidth than a 1xlane card.
Performance seems OK.

I installed this on a Dell T7500 workstation which has only SATA II, and saw the sequential performance of my Samsung 840 SSD increase substantially (orig 283, after 526). Little impact on 4k performance.

I haven't tested it, but the card claims to support Linux, which I like because it gives me the option of giving Linux a shot someday.

Cons: "Manual" is not helpful, contains info about using RAID options not included with this card, I took one egg off for such poor documentation.

Other Thoughts: Price was ok.
I would recommend this card to anybody who needs some additional SATA III ports.
I just got the card installed and bench-marked, cannot comment on longevity.
Notes:
This card has 2 internal SATA ports, and 2 external eSATA ports
This card has no raid functionality

5 out of 5 eggsGood controller card for JBOD

Pros: Installed this on my Windows 8.1 Media Center server. This card says it can do RAID 0,1, and 10, but I didn't try that. Mostly got for e-sata ports on the back in JBOD mode for a Mediasonic enclosure using Storage Space - but ended up using one of the internal SATA ports as well. Performance is good.

Cons: You do have to update the driver from the on the IOCrest website. Not exactly intuitive, the one you need is Marvell92xx and I installed every INF in the folder until one worked. The ones on the driver CD didn't work for me.

Other Thoughts: Kind of spendy, but I needed it, the motherboard I have doesn't have an e-sata port on it, and even it it did, many don't have the port multiplier ability. This card fits the bill.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap upgrade for SATA III.

I'm getting 520 MB/s read and write speeds.

Great access times to files.

New SSD's and didn't lose any of my data.

Can set output module for video rendering straight onto this drive and not suffer from a lagging HDD or waste space on my RAID array.

Cons: Slow boot time. I have a RAID 0 array for my OS and this card for data and a native RAID 10 configuration. It's like will this computer ever turn on.

Other Thoughts: I have an i7 875K overclocked to 4.0Ghz and can't justify spending money on a new system until the unlocked 8 core processors come out. Don't get me wrong the Z97 platform looks awesome but I'm waiting for the X99.

I do regret not buying the i7 980X but at the time $1000 for a processor seemed like a lot and I was unenthusiastic about triple channel DDR3.

Considering the years I've had this P55 having spent the extra money on the X58 instead seems reasonable in retrospect. So when those X99's role out I plan on sparing no expense unless they are priced $2,300 like the Xeon E5's currently are. Spare no expense is in regards to comparable pricing to the current X79 being a $1000 processor is the top of the line.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Add-on Card

Pros: Double the speeds of Sata II. Benchmarked two SSDs. One an OCZ 60 gb soild 3 and one Intel 80 GB Sata III. Saw 540 read and 510 write on the Intel and on the OCZ 530 Read and 480 write. This card is 100% plug and play, my bios recognized it immediately and so did windows. No need to install any drivers whatsoever. Windows loads faster and games load faster.

Cons: Have no need for the esata in the back, i think i paid double the price to get esata which i may never use. There are cards that dont offer any esata that are half the price made by the same company.

Other Thoughts: When in bios where it says marvel driver and it gives all the info of the HDDs it also only says 5GB/s as oppose to 6GB/s. As long as im getting the rated speeds for the SSDs i dont really care. I put this into a still very functional X-58 motherboard in a PCI-E X16 slot.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for my PC

Pros: -Works with native Windows MSACHI drivers

I got close to native SATA III speeds with a Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB on an old Gigabyte P55-UD3R motherboard
AS-SSD
SeqTest
Read 486.55 MB/s
Write 296.61 MB/s
4K
Read 20.04 MB/s
Write 65.02 MB/s

Was a bit faster than the ASMedia 1061 card.

Cons: -Marvel drivers are terrible, stick with the msachi drivers
-Requires a PCIe V2 slot, in PCIe slot performance will be SATAII like.

Other Thoughts: Use HWiNFO064 to check your PCIe slots prior to buying this card, not worth it if your ports are not PCIE V2.

1 out of 5 eggsuseless

Pros: PCIE x2

Cons: It is a "chinese" product that is not compatible with SATA III solid states drives
It is too expensive for a tentative compatibility with SATA III HDDs - up to $9.99 could be a deal for those who still wanna kill their time

Other Thoughts: Stick to LSI or other respectable names
