4 out of 5 eggslow on ports solution

Pros: I was running low on SATA ports. this card helped solve the problem. easy set up. has worked reliably for past several months. I did not get this card for RAID - I just wanted more ports - which is what I got.

tolerates presence of other SATA cards of similar ilk.

Cons: none that I can see

2 out of 5 eggsQuestionable Windows XP Support

Pros: Nice piece of hardware -- well built

Cons: Too bad I couldn't get it to work

Other Thoughts: First, I converted an existing IDE installation of Windows to AHCI via numbers web tutorials. I tested the system and it was stable.

Then I installed the StarTech PEXESAT322I card, and the BIOS and Windows XP detected it. I downloaded and installed an updated driver from StarTech's website and another, more recent one for the specific Asmedia ASM 106x chipset.

Testing with both drivers revealed the following:

1) Windows XP could detect, read and write to drives attached to the card.
2) BUT, Windows XP often would become unstable and the drives would go offline.

In summary, for me, this card did NOT work in Windows XP. Others may have better luck, but I RMAd the card.

3 out of 5 eggsSupports 2 Drives Only

Pros: Easy to install and use.

Cons: Only supports 2 drives in any configuration.

You can have 2 eSATA or 2 SATA or 1 eSATA+1 SATA, but despite the fact that each eSATA port can support 2 drives, you can't use them both at the same time for 2 drives each. You can only use both ports the same time for 1 drive each.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Idea ?!?

Pros: Well, the only Pro I can think of is the company's (Startech.com) customer relations.

Cons: As it turns out the card doesn't work with Windows 8.1. Now the card , box and instruction booklet say it works w/win 8. However I see now drivers on the disk for win 8. I see them for Win Vista, Win XP, Win 7, Win NE, but no Win 8 of any kind. Now when calling Tech support, they were very nice and helpful. However they advised me there are known issues with all of there cards (at this time) with Win 8.1. But Win 8 should work. I explained I don't even see Win 8 on the CD, The gentleman really didn't have an answer for me. But he did say I would receive a email within 48 hours as he's going to reach out to their engineers as they maybe testing drivers for win 8.1 and they haven't posted them yet due to the 100% uncertainty they will work on every system.

Other Thoughts: I'll reply back and advise what happens in a couple of days.

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleased

Pros: - Easy setup for on older system with PCI-E slot.
- Inexpensive.
- Kit contains one SATA cable.
- Instructions were satisfactory for my needs.

Cons: - None for my setup.

Other Thoughts: I needed to add a couple of SATA ports to my older system, which I'm using as a combo HTPC and backup. The motherboard only has two SATA ports, so by adding this, I've now got two D: drives in software RAID 1 via the Windows disk management.

As others have mentioned, take time and read the manual. For my experience, it's short but actually much better than normal. Basically my setup worked the first time.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but slow Boot

Pros: It does work.

Cons: It added 35 seconds to my boot time with any device connected to it. StarTech support tried to help but was unable to come up with a solution other than getting a different card. If you do not turn your computer on and off a lot this card would work fine for you, if you care about a fast boot time then you will want to look elsewhere.

Other Thoughts: HP Pavilion Elite HPE 410T Windows 7 Home

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great.

Pros: It works as advertised.
Very easy to install and set-up.

Cons: The only con I have for this unit is that when you start up your PC, in my case my HTPC, this starts up first to recognize attached drives. This is going to slow your boot-up time, even if you're using an SSD.

Other Thoughts: When I found out my HTPC's MB didn't support port multiplier I decided to use an add-on esata card that did support Port Multiplier so I could take advantage of the speed advantage of esata over USB 2.0. Yes, I know that USB 3.0 is faster than esata but, according to the reviews posted for the external enclosures I was looking at, USB seems to be somewhat unstable for that application.
Anyway, I used this to connect a Mediasonic Pro Box to my HTPC via esata and it works. I had no problems setting the card up. The drivers in the supplied driver disc worked fin.

2 out of 5 eggsPort multiplier doesn't work when using both eSATA ports

Pros: Cheap. Works OK with only one port multiplier in use. Easy to install.

Cons: When you try to use the port multiplier on both eSATA ports, it fails. It just sees one drive on each drive set. Other reviews say that it works fine if you only use one of the eSATA ports, and that the manufacturer verifies that this is by design.

5 out of 5 eggsCompatible, fast, and solid

Pros: Based on an ASMedia ASM1061 chip, this card works well with all the latest Intel and AMD boards -- unlike the Marvell-based cards. It's faster, too -- I get ~180MBps (vs 150) sustained drive-to-drive transfer in Windows explorer, WITH antivirus and all my apps running.

Works perfectly with a port multiplier (such as the Addonics AD5ESAPM-E), RAID enclosures, DVD-writers -- everything I've thrown at it. (but see Cons regarding multipliers)

These cost a little more than the other ASM1061 cards I've bought, but the quality is obviously better -- connectors, capacitors, etc., right down to the jumper settings clearly printed on the card.

Cons: Speed is limited by the PCIe x1 interface, so forget SSD.

Only 2 ports (internals, externals, or one of each) can be enabled at a time, and you have to move jumpers on the card to change them. Only supports PORT-MULTIPLIER ON ONE PORT AT A TIME. RAID enclosures don't count as multipliers, but plain multi-drive enclosures do.

Drivers, from the CD or web, are required. (The card did auto-install on one Windows 7 PC, but only as a generic SATA controller.)

Other Thoughts: STarTech website is outdated; check the "Asmedia ASM 106x" section of station-drivers.com for the latest firmware and drivers.
