Increase the amount of storage in your rack with this RSV-S5 storage enclosure from Rosewill. The chassis utilizes a special tray in and out design to make drive swaps faster. The enclosure supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 10 and JBOD.
A full 220W power supply provides ample power even under heavy load. There is also plenty of power to run the chassis exhaust fans and the drive cage fans. The well ventilated chassis helps to keep the drives cool and running on peak levels.

Pros: It works with several different RAID options as well as pass-thru which allows it to function as a simple 5 bay enclosure if you just want that.
Using it in RAID with Parity (Raid 5) with 5 WD 1TB 1001FALS with TLER enabled on them (strongly recommended). Recognized the disks and it was relatively simple to create the array and quick NTFS format it. To build the Array took 14 hours in my case. I've had NO issues with the Raid dropping drives or it failing randomly. And that is after transferring 3 GB of data and using it for streaming video/Music. Running with 32kb chunk and allocation unit size.
PCI-E Controller has two estata ports so you can run a 2nd box. My second has been ordered and is on it's way.
Adequate cooling with the fan in my warm room. It comes with all the screws for 5 drives.
Cons: Plain design with a bay door that covers the green activity lights.
To open the bays, you slide the chrome piece to the right, something not stated in the manual and I was having trouble figuring it out. Easy once you know.
Other Thoughts: If using consumer HDD make sure you enable TLER or whatever equivalent setting for the drives. Otherwise the drives may fall out of RAID under heavy I/O.
Use Advanced Raid Settings under preferences, and turn on Check Pointing. This is a must if you want to power cycle the box. Without check pointing when I power cycled I got 15 hours to rebuild redundancy with the raid running in reduced mode. With check pointing option on, it was 4 minutes to rebuild!!! So if you plan on turning the box off when not in use, I strongly recommend turning on check pointing.

Pros: Low Cost - One of the most affordable Raid servers.
Rare 5 bay - I wanted a device that I could set up with 4 drives in a Raid 5 for my most valuable files (pictures, music, documents), and 1 large drive left over for temporary storage and long term storage or replaceable files (program installs, etc)
Cons: Either the device or the port multiplier freezes the host computer and slows transfers to a crawl. To explain further, When I set up the Raid 5 and went to transfer all my files from the host computer to the Raid, it was about 300GB. the transfer started and windows said it was transferring at 70-80 mbps. Great, only 30-40 min at that speed. then all the lights went out on the server, and the drives booted back up one at a time... now it said 20mbps. a minute later another "reboot", now 10mbps... and so forth. Ended up taking 13 hours to transfer the files. So I called up tech support expecting great service from the responses I've seen on here only to be told by a CS rep that the server is made by someone else and to call a different number. I called the number given and it went straight to voicemail. Needless to say I left a VM and still have not received a response. And to top it off, all the trays were jammed in there, and one tray had a spring missing. No offer to replace
Other Thoughts: The freezing is SO annoying..... imagine trying to get any work done with your computer completely freezing every minute while you're doing anything with any of the drives on the server. At first I thought it was just the Raid 5 causing it, so I set it up as a Raid 1, but it does it even worse.
Unless you're really desperate for a cheap raid server, hold out for something better.

Pros: Easy to set up and configure, several different raid modes available, painless driver installation. Super fast transfer rates.
Drive temperature is a leading factor to drive failure, this drive bay keeps the drives cooler than room temp.
Cons: The ESATA cable is not the greatest, the connectors are huge and don't seem to fit flush with either the drive bay or computer port.

Pros: Install the PCIe card and Win XP PRO sp3 installed the drivers for me. I installed a Samsung 1TB HDD and it is formatting as I'm writting this. This unit is very quite. Yea the manual isn't the best but I'm not using it for RAID but JBOD. I'm waiting for the 1tb to format before I plug in the other drives which are going to be used. I find the quality to be pretty good and easy to use. My #1 pc does not have a PCIe so I'm running it off #2 which is a Asus A8N-E. I been reading the reviews that everyone has written and it gave me a lot of good info to make the buy, of course Newegg had a KILLER deal how could you past it up. I have been trying to get tech info from Rosewill before I purchase a PCI eSata card (RC-220). It's been emails back and forth, they are telling me to use the RC-209-EX but I'm concerned about the jumpers. I'm not using RAID and don't plan on it so I just want a card for JBOD. The specs on Newegg state that you can use the Rosewill RC-220 for PCI eSata.
Cons: I haven't found any yet.
Other Thoughts: contd: Does anyone know if you can use the RC-220 PCIe card?? to run the RSV-S5 ?? If it will I can install a RC-220 in my #1 pc and then I can plug the unit into which ever pc I want to use. Mainly got this unit for movies & music storage anyway.
AS ALWAYS NEWEGG IS THE BEST and FAST SHIPPING as WELL. You couldn't ask for anymore than that.

Cons: Originally the description for this item didn't say "non-RAID", and Rosewill's website states that the RSV-S5 box needs an RC-220 card to work with their RSV-S5 box. The Raid box has a PCIe card, but I needed PCI. So, with the understanding that this is the card to get from Rosewill's web site, I got it. It doesn't work.
Other Thoughts: Anyone know what PCI card will work with a Rosewill RSV-S5 RAID box?

Pros: Holds 5 drives each up to 1.5 TB
Cons: Formatting takes forever on RAID 5
Other Thoughts: I want to move the RSV-S5 from one box to another. HOW can I do this without losing the data currently on the RSV-S5? And I don't just mean back it up and then restore. I have been looking for a way to contact Rosewill.
