5 out of 5 eggsGreat card for the price

Pros: Price, Quick to install, Easy to set up, Works well

Cons: SATA II speeds

Other Thoughts: I have a mini-ITX Linux server in a Lian Li case that accommodates only five drives. I needed more storage and settled upon ordering the SansDigital TR4M6GNC JBOD to expand it out to 8 drives in my RAID + OS drive. I ordered this RAID card to handle that eSATA connection due to it's high reviews, but mostly for it's price.

I wasn't let down. I recently had to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 and opted for a clean install. It recognized the card at install with no hassle. I have literally had to do nothing to get this card working with Linux but plop it into its PCIe slot and plug the eSATA cable in.

Speeds are about what you would expect from a SATA II card. Specifications say that each eSATA port is it's own bus, but I have not yet tried a second device attached to it. Perhaps I'll order another TR4M6GNC and see if two work at the same time.

5 out of 5 eggsBloodless Installation, Faultless Operation

Pros: Purchased to supplement my MOBO eSATA controllers which did not support SANS DIGITAL 4 PORT JBOD tower storage enclosure. Installed card into ASROCK Z68, 64 BIT WIN 7 system. There was no need to search internet for suitable drivers, WIN 7 took care of that. Attached tower enclosure with 3 HDD's (2 ea 1 TB, and 1 4 TB) and the system immediately ran correctly without additional keyboard entries or mouse clicks. Will check to see if both eSATA connectors are operational as needed.

Cons: Set up was so error free that I wasted an extra 15 minutes trying to find out if was truly operational by checking Device manager and Storage manager.

Other Thoughts: Reviews by others on this card and the SANS tower enclosure were somewhat mediocre. I will write an addendum to this review if after 6 mos to a year the system falls apart. For now, all is well!

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Waste Your Time - No Hot Swap and Only Supports One Drive

Pros: If you only need to connect one drive at a time and are okay with shutting down your computer every time you need to remove or reconnect the drive, then this card would work for you I suppose.

Cons: -Can only connect one drive at a time
-No hot swap support
-No internal SATA connections
-Have to pay for return shipping

I wasted way too much time on this card. Tried different cables, different drives, etc. The bad reviews are right: It's junk.

Other Thoughts: I should have bought this card from the large book seller. The price is the same and they pay for return shipping when they sell a trash product like this card.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: Worked immediately with no hassle. MUCH faster transfer speeds with eSATA than with USB 2.0.

Cons: No major issues. See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: Had to pop open Disk Management to assign the correct drive letter as it defaulted to F or G out of left field. This may be symptomatic of all add-on disk controllers?

4 out of 5 eggsCorrect for an Acer H340

Pros: Works as it should for my needs of a JBOD eSata multiplier.

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: purchased this to replace a different eSata card for my Acer H340. The on board eSata port will work with 1 drive; adding a 2nd will still work but it will throw errors and occasionally halt the system. This card plugged right in, connected my 4bay eSata enclosure (no need to evict and re-add drives in WHS) and has run flawlessly since then. The old eSata card did manage to mangle the data on the external array, but a script from MS did correct the issue, even if it ran for 5 days on unmounted volumes! (9TB of disk, 1GB of RAM, and an Atom processor, that's actually not THAT bad).

4 out of 5 eggsMay not work with Linux

Pros: I believe this card works under Windows. The technical specs did not mention Linux as a possibility. So I'm giving the product 4 eggs.

Cons: I purchase this board so I could attach my old media hard drives to a used HP DL380 G5 server I picked up cheap. I installed Ubuntu server 12.04 and when that didn't work I tried the 13.10 version also. Both were plagued by timeouts and resets of the drives when I tried to access the drives. I tried passing both the msi=1 and msi=0 settings to the device driver with no change in the behavior.

3 out of 5 eggsRock Solid, But Slow

Pros: The SiI3132 chipset works with the Ubuntu 13.10 out of the box, and supports FIS eSata port replication well. Zero issue with reliability and Rosewill is a decent brand

Cons: Slow. Throughput maxes out at around 116 MB/Sec. regard less of drive configurations.

Other Thoughts: If you're running a linux server, this is a good choice. Well established and guaranteed to work without custom kernel modules. If I had it to do over again, I would go for a faster card.

5 out of 5 eggsStable, but not 3 Gb/s

Pros: Very stable;
does not have specific drive requirements like some other cards;
does not drop HDDs randomly like some other cards.

Cons: The manufacturer advertises this card as SATA II 3.0 Gb/s. I have an external hardware raid with 4 HDDs. When I connect it to the motherboards onboard eSATA port, I get sustained read rate of ~270 MB/s (which is SATA II speed). With this card, I get only half of that at ~130 MB/s (which is actually SATA I speed).
However, if both ports are used simultaneously -- such as 3-4 drives attached to one, and 3-4 attached to another -- I get >200 MB/s.

Other Thoughts: I thought about giving this card a 4 egg rating, given the aforementioned con (more so about misrepresenting the product, rather than the actual speed), but seeing as how 1.5 Gb/s is enough for my purposes, the relatively low price of the card, and overall excellent stability, I thought taking a whole egg would have been too harsh.

Also, to the previous reviewer "The Advocate" who made a suggestion to another reviewer to "lower your tech level to 0, because you obviously know absolutely nothing about computers" ... well, maybe you should do the same thing, as your knowledge here is clearly lacking ... just a thought.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: Fast, stable.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I have a HDD dock that comes with USB 2.0 and eSATA ports, always used the USB 2.0 port because my MB doesn't have eSATA ports. Recently I decided that I need faster connection for external HDDs. So it is either buying a USB 3.0 HDD dock or having an eSATA extension on the MB. It turns out this product is a nice choice. Cheaper than buying a new USB 3.0 HDD dock and the speed is way better than USB 2.0.

Windows 8 automatically installed driver for the card. I manually upgraded the driver by downloading a newer one from SI website.

Same for the BIOS, the one comes with the card is 7.7.02, and the latest is 7.7.03.
