5 out of 5 eggsBest budget card I've ever tried!

Pros: Excellent for adding SSD Raid "0" array to an older computer. Bringing it up to current standards. I am able to play the new generation games easily now.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I have an older i7, 1155 motherboard with only 1 sata 3 port. on board. I don't like SSD Cashing and I couldn't get it to work on that board anyway. I would rather raid 0 a couple of Samsung 850s and have all the space I want with wicked speed. "It's like having your cake and eating it too"!

1 out of 5 eggsPoor capability

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: First off this is the same product as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816150041 check out the model number PI49230-2X2B on the board. All the chips are the same too.

Running xubuntu 14.04 3.13.0-24 This card had a conflict with something in the OS or virtualBox. When I installed 4x 3TB drives on this card and grew my existing raid5 5x 3TB drives it would fail about 5min into the reshaping process. Luckily I was able to boot into init3 and force continue the raid reshaping process. Now that its done I can get rid of this faulty card.

With VirtualBox uninstalled it seems that the card is stable for now. But I can't risk it.

5 out of 5 eggsThis item is awesome.

Pros: This item did exactly what I expected it to. It is great that it is bootable.

Cons: The card raid set up is more server style. I prefer a more simple raid setup.

2 out of 5 eggs4 drive limit to port multiplier feature

Pros: Works with stock linux kernel

Cons: The port multiplier support is limited to 4 drives. With an 8-bay enclosure, only four drives will be seen. With two multi-drive enclosures, only 4 drives will be seen.

For configuring the jumpers I found the manual less clear than the printing on the actual card.

Other Thoughts: One can argue the specs say "Max. 4 HDDs to PM for individual drive configuration" but that footnote didn't really make sense to me until after struggling to grow my total storage past the fourth drive.

4 out of 5 eggsIdentical to a Vantec UGT-ST644R

Pros: See "Other Thoughts"

Cons: See "Other Thoughts"

Other Thoughts: This card is identical to a Vantec UGT-ST644R, which Newegg currently sells for less money. Both use the same Marvell reference design and drivers. See my review under Vantec UGT-ST644R.

5 out of 5 eggsHyper-Duo is a Winner !!

Pros: Hyper-Duo feature lets you combine an SSD with a regular spinning hard drive (HDD) to create a speedy Hybrid drive.

Also lets you combine two drives in traditional RAID array.

Cons: Adds several seconds to bootup time.

Other Thoughts: Hyper-Duo is an optional feature of the current generation Marvell 92xx chipset. It's similar to Intel Smart Response. Basically, you can combine any size SSD with any size HDD and get full SSD speed on all your frequently used stuff - games, programs, internet browser, and operating system. We have a different brand controller card with the same Marvell chip. We combined a 240GB Sandisk Extreme SATA III SSD with a brand new Toshiba 2TB 7200rpm 64MB cache SATA III hard drive. During the first day or three the system is learning how you use your computer and it begins copying all those files onto the SSD so that Windows can work really fast. The original files remain safely stored on the regular hard drive. An inexpensive 32GB or 64GB SSD will hold pretty much all you need (our use of a 240GB SSD is definitely overkill !). So, give it a couple of days learning time and you'll get the full benefit of Hyper-Duo.
Regarding measured performance: Instead of running benchmark tests (like HDTune, ATTO, CrystalDiskMark, etc.) just notice the time needed to start up Windows and open programs, load games, launch your internet browser and so on. That's the real test - speeding up your computer!
