1 out of 5 eggsTechnical Support Lacking

Pros: None

Cons: SIIG's technical support would not take ownership for the numerous problems that I encountered over the past 3 months. I contacted the support organization 4 times and their suggested resolutions to the 3 different problems encountered either didn't resolve the problem or they blamed outside factors, such as a virus infection. The virus infection was their answer to the most recent and most troubling problem; while executing support's troubleshooting steps I discovered my RAID 1 "mirrored" disk configuration did not contain the same data on the two mirrored disks. Files copied to the RAID 1 device earlier that day did not exist on both disks! Finally a replacement was suggested and the SIIG RMA department contacted me via email and requested ship to address information along with controller part number and serial number data. I replied to their email within 20 minutes with the requested info. A full week then passed without any additional communications from the RMA department.

Other Thoughts: I have interfaced with many different technical support organizations over the past 20 years and in my opinion this experience is by far the most disappointing! The support organization avoided taking ownership for any of the problems encountered.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it should

Pros: Works as expected, plug in, connect drives, boot and Fedora 14 picks it right up.

Cons: No cons for this one.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine, easy to install and use

Pros: Works well as non-RAID SATA-II controller too.
If you don't already have it, it gives you hot swap.
Web site shows Windows 7 supported too.
Support seemed OK too - I emailed Technical Support with a question and they responded promptly.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Bought to upgrade from Compaq SR1710NX onboard SATA-I controller. Installed as non-RAID in RAID BIOS by selecting CONCATENATION after "Create RAID Set" (CONCATENATION selection not documented in SIIG manual). For WD2500AAK HD, HD Tach benchmark showed these changes: burst at 119 (was 112); avg read at 72 (was 71); and CPU overhead at 2% (was 5%). Also, I think I'm better positioned to utilize SSD speed.

1 out of 5 eggsNice until it dies

Pros: It ran RAID 1 decently for ~6 months.

Cons: last night it died. If I have drives plugged into it, the computer freezes in a black screen at start-up. Both HDs are OK.

Other Thoughts: Just frustrated.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks at SATA I Speeds

Pros: Card works (see below) for adding drives to a system.

Cons: Something not quite right with this card. The speeds detected by HD-Tach indicate that the drive is running at SATA-I speeds (150) even though the drive is setup for SATA-II speeds (300). If I move the same drive to a different controller, I get the correct SATA-II speeds. If I take another drive and try it on this SIIG controller, then the drive drops down to SATA-I speeds. I agree with the previous reviewer that somehow the handshaking is dropping down to SATA-I speeds.

Other Thoughts: SIIG website is a mess and is of no help. Be careful of version 2 hardware being shipped with version 1 drivers.

2 out of 5 eggsMay have drive compatibility issues

Pros: Inexpensive solution for basic RAID-0 or 1.

Cons: May have problems with newer hardware. Support from manufacturer is limited.

Other Thoughts: Bought this card to use with two Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives. Performance in RAID-0 turned out to be lower than a single drive connected to my mobo's ICH9 controller. After hours of troubleshooting and no help available from SIIG, I'm guessing that the card is not detecting the hard drives' faster 3.0gb/s mode, locking them in at the slower SATA 150 mode.

I would recommend avoiding this card if you have newer hardware that may not be compatible. If you need basic RAID, pick a motherboard with an onboard Intel controller or spend a little extra for a Highpoint add-in card.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW!

Pros: Have this running in a raid 0 in windows ultimate x64 and 2 Seagate SV35.2 ST3320620SV 320GB and this is very fast! Keep in mind, my claims are based soley on going from a single 60gb, 7200rpm seagate prior. But here are the specs based on hd tune 2.53:

HD Tune: SiImage Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 35.0 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 96.5 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 89.4 MB/sec
Access Time : 14.9 ms
Burst Rate : 96.4 MB/sec
CPU Usage : 6.0%

I did notice that the access time is slow at least on paper. I can't tell the difference in everyday use however. Windows booted up sooooo much faster. Very good documentation. Lifetime warranty on the product (who does that these days?)! Individual led's for each drives access. Buy it! It works as advertised even on x64 machines!

Cons: Maybe the access time, but not in my case. For the cash, I'd like 4 sata ports and maybe the capability of raid 5. Still a 5 egger!

Other Thoughts: I noticed on Siigas' offcial website, the price of this card is 80 bucks! I'd say it would even be worth that but to get it on the egg would be that much better!

5 out of 5 eggsNice little card

Pros: Simple install. Works perfectly.
Manual is very good.

Cons: Driver install may be confusing for newbies. SATA cables don't have retaining clips. A bit expensive

Other Thoughts: Not hardware RAID but so what? It's an easy way to add more SATA ports.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks for me

Pros: Easy install and setup. This replaced onboard raid which was giving me problems.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Just installed card connected two drives and did what needed to do for the setup.
No problems with setup and no problems with running 24/7 for the last couple months.
SIIG makes good stuff.
