1 out of 5 eggsIncompatible with OSX 10.8

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Doesn't even show up in System Profiler. Apparently requires a driver that SIIG's contract programmers just haven't gotten around to write. Allegedly compatible with 10.5 - 10.7.

Other Thoughts: Yet another SIIG product that provides spotty compatibility with Macs. Not NewEgg's fault.

3 out of 5 eggsProduct generally very good, but manuf. support abysmal.

Pros: Relatively cheap, easy to install, drivers easy to find on manufacturer's web site, stable. Rating on product quality alone, I would rate this 5 eggs.

Cons: Not the most reliable quality (in the middle of dealing with one right now that died today, 37 days after purchase, so no NewEgg return, and SIIG's tech support doesn't answer their phone, RMA department is just a voice mail box---don't plan on getting any fast help from the manufacturer if the unit goes bad). Since there is virtually zero tech support on this product, rating that one egg. It is very important to me not just that a product works, but that a manufacturer stands behind their product as well. Overall score thus is averaged to 3 eggs.

Other Thoughts: All in all, I've been pleased with this board. I have purchased and installed it as our preferred controller in somewhere around 25 different servers and 10 desktops. So I've been through a fair number of these boards. They are reliable, stay connected (no HD "drops" and it's rare to need to reset a connected drive) and at $70, reasonably priced.

However, today I just had my first one fail, which crashed the server it was running in rather spectacularly (note: all the "hot swap" capability in the world doesn't help if the board itself suddenly disappears). Finding out that I was 37 days after purchase (NewEgg has a 30-day return/replace policy) meant that I needed to call the manufacturer. SIIG's RMA support line is nothing more than "please leave your name and number and someone will call you sometime" and after leaving my contact information, I called back and held for over 30 minutes for tech support before giving up. That's an unacceptable level of company support.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised.

Pros: Works perfectly. Installed in a Dell PowerEdge 2900 (circa 2008) running Windows Server 2003 R2 with no issues whatsoever.

Using it to attach an ioSafe SoloPRO backup drive.

Cons: More expensive than other cards that use the same chipset (SiI 3132).

Other Thoughts: As I said, it's more expensive. But when I read another reviewer above say that they actually got SIIG *on the phone* when they had a problem with the card, and that the card was replaced quickly, I decided it was worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsUPDATE: Works on Dell T710

Pros: Fast, inexpensive, works with server 2008 x64

Cons: one port died

Other Thoughts: One port dies after 3-4 months... as I have not heard of this I assume its a fluke... I am on the phone with SIIG waiting for their tech support for 25+ minutes as I type this.

-1 egg for port death
-1 egg for unreasonable tech support wait

Overall I would still recommend it... I think I got a fluke
UPDATE: Got replacement from SIIG. Called them up and everything went smoothly. You can do advance replacement (where they send you the card first) but they charge $10 for it (I opted to send it in first).
+1 Egg for RMA support once I got to them (3 egg+5egg = 4 egg)

NOTE: If you have Server 2008 you must change the settings so that eSATA drives will mount automatically. By default it treats eSATA devices like NAS storage units and you have to go to the storage manager to manually make it "Online". AFAIK, this can not be done graphically, it is done on the command line.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfectly

Pros: This board installed without the slightest problem and has worked perfectly for the two months I've owned it. I have it connected to a pair of Samsung EcoGreen F2 HD154UI 1.5TB SATA external drives which I also bought from NewEgg. I now have comprehensive backup capacity for the huge amount of graphics and music files with the fast throughput of eSATA. It is MUCH faster than USB 2.0 connection.

Cons: There aren't any.

Other Thoughts: The high performance of the eSATA connection makes multiple backups of immense amounts of data feasible.
Since I had a C: drive fail a year ago I am much more concerned about proper backups. This SIIG card really makes a difference.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks but wasn't easy

Pros: Works seamlessly after some trial and effort on os x 10.5.8. Got it hooked up to an external eSata hard drive bay and its transferring files over quickly.

Cons: Need to download special drivers not included with the package to get this to work on newer OS X!

Other Thoughts: Please be aware it took me a few hours to get this to work. The drivers for OS X that come with the package are only valid until I believe 10.5.6. It did not work on my 10.5.8. SIIG iteself does not offer a fix for this, you have to go to the Silicon Image website (chipset manufacturer) and download the update. It says for 10.6.x, but it worked for my 10.5.8 as well.

This is not very good as I don't know if future OS updates are going to make the esata card not work anymore. They need to do a better job of updating drivers.

5 out of 5 eggsworks great

Pros: Works great in my Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R mobo, (which is PCIe1x) and regardless of which OS I throw at it. Does not lock up; removable feature works fine. Hard to say much more... does exactly what is claimed for it, and the price is right.

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: recommended
