Fast, Easy to use
- Pros: Works great in my PC. New firmware allows it to boot in my new MacPro as well. Very fast with just half the disks. Currently using WD5000AAKS.
- Cons: Ethernet seems to disconnect after extended periods.
- Other Thoughts: Somewhat hard to understand foreign tech support. BIOS setup doesn't work in my new Asus Maximus Formula, have to use web based admin. Takes a long time to rebuild disks (over a day) but I have nothing to compare this to.
Awesome raid controller
- Pros: Fast. Fast. Fast. This card is Hella fast.
- Cons: Pretty expensive (but not excessively so when comparing other hardware raid5/6 controllers which support 12 drives)
Hot! I have a little fan which uses one of my mobo sockets to help keep it cool. Temps went from 60 C to 40C.
- Other Thoughts: This raid controller is aweomse! It works great in linux, mac OS and windows XP. I mainly use it on linux with 12x1TB seagate drives in raid5 for 11 TB of usable disk space. I get about 820 MB/sec sustained read speeds and about 650 MB/sec sustained writes. I upgraded the cache to 2 GB since it was only $50 to buy it (which I did from new egg). When running windows I ran hdtach on it and you can see my results here:box.houkouonchi.net/hdtach.png . Areca is definitely the best you can get as far as performance is concerned. Also you can see voltages and individual drives temps via web-interface/telnet.
Great controller
- Pros: Works like a charm. It's FAST. Works great with WD5001ABYS drives and Icy Dock rack. I bought on newegg crucial memory for it (N82E16820148022). Worked well. I had it set up on Asus P5E - no problems here (had to update BIOS though). Set up raid 6 (5xWD5001ABYS). Insanely fast read. It was dropping drives first but it was PSU fault. I wasted 2 days to figure it out. Upgraded to 750W (from 550W) and all problems disappeared.
- Cons: None but the price.
