1 out of 5 eggsMAC PRO 2010 FAILS

Pros: None. Quick RMA

Cons: Mac OS X 10.6.7 breaks many RAID cards. Out of box needed firmware upgrade. Poor direction does not mention to NOT use Safari to Upgrade Firmware .. use Firefox .. but still half of array not recognized ... none can be formatted. Poor Mac support ... shabby interface.

Other Thoughts: Beware of companies that claim the are Mac Compatible when you can visually see they are foreign PC users. Call tech and ask to speak to their Mac specialist. Ask them a few questions about the Mac and if they use one ... then hang up.

4 out of 5 eggsBest SAS for the $

Pros: Cheap, SAS, Out of band management, OS support is great,

Cons: May not fit in 1U or other space constrained cases which is a serious flaw

Other Thoughts: This is my favorite Areca card. Very low cost for a SAS controller. Works with a variety of OS's, and does it's job well. Has an out of band Ethernet port for super easy LAN based administration. The 1222 is the 8 port version of this card. If you're using this on a database server, I strongly recommend getting the battery BBM in addition to this or any RAID controller. It may not fit in 1U servers due to the heatsink cooling fan.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Areca Support

Pros: Newegg rocks. Instant RMA!

Cons: Card locked up repeatedly when trying to configure the drives. Areca says to call TekRam for support in the US. Contacted them, they agreed the card was defective and issued an RMA. They refused to pay for return shipping. Repeated explanations that I shouldn't have to pay to pay for shipping to replace a card that arrived defective fell on deaf ears. I told them I would no longer purchase Areca cards.

Other Thoughts: Newegg rocks. I got an instant RMA and they are refunding the money to my card. I will be purchasing a non-Areca card in a few minutes... ;)

2 out of 5 eggs1U Beware

Pros: Not DOA, instant RMA.

Cons: If you're working in a 1U case, this card isn't for you. With the fan attached, the card is about two millimeters taller than the retainer. If you're using a riser card, make sure you measure how much clearance you have.

Other Thoughts: The fan-out cable is nice, but it doesn't need to be three feet long (especially if the gap between your card and your hard drives is only four inches).

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent controller

Pros: Fast, inexpensive, Mac-bootable, easy to set up, responsive tech support, easy to read and comprehensive user guide, fan is quiet.

Cons: Backup battery is extra

Other Thoughts: I bought this controller because my new Mac Pro 2009 does not offer RAID 5; this controller fulfills that role. It does RAID 5 and offers an easy to use web utility that you can access on your web browser. Set up is quick, and the user manual explains every function and how to set it up. If you have a regular computer, you can use the BIOS set up without an issue; if you have a Mac, you need to boot up via rEFIt—I had to contact support for this and they were quick to respond and offered me the correct steps to use the BIOS configuration on a Mac.

The speed of the controller is fast. It can run off an x4 PCIe slot as long as the slots are full length and again set up was easy.

I wish the controller came with the backup battery as it's difficult to justify spending 1/3 the price of the controller on a battery. I hope Areca will reconsider the price of that, or maybe even consider integrating it onto the controller board. Of course this doesn't take away from this controller.
