3 out of 5 eggsFollow-up after 4 months of operation

Pros: Decent controller options, web-based UI, email alerts, fairly quick. 2GB of on-board cache appears to make a big difference.

Cons: If you use what Areca terms a 'desktop' class drive, they claim that when an error occurs, the drive will spend too long recovering and the controller will mark that drive as failed although nothing is wrong with the disk. I've been plagued with drive dropouts due to timeout errors.

After 4 months, began to observe the controller's responsiveness starting to degrade. Today after two reboots, the controller stopped responding altogether at a customer's facility.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully Areca will respond to my email request. Last time it took them over a week. No RMA instructions or links exist on their site. I'm starting to question whether or not I want to use their controllers in my equipment. Good thing it failed now before I ordered another half-dozen of these for some machines we're building. If Areca drops the ball, I'd rather keep the loss to one card instead of dozens.

5 out of 5 eggsEXTREMELY Fast

Pros: SCREAMING fast with full SAS support, both internal and external connectors, built-in dedicated Ethernet KVM. What's there to say beyond that? Oh yeah - buy the battery backup for it.

Cons: Battery backup should be included. Nobody else does though.

Other Thoughts: No HTTPS support for the KVM. That's a kinda-big-deal from my perspective... it is what it is.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: Running (8) 1.5TB SATA disks off of this controller in a RAID 6 configuration on Fedora Core 11 using an ext4 filesystem. Fairly easy to setup and manage, especially through the web-based interface. Areca provides a number of configuration options to permit you to do just about anything you want. One feature I particularly enjoy is the SMTP alerts (email) to myself and other admins when something heads south (e.g. disk going offline).

Cons: I asked a question of their technical support, and when they finally responded, it was a cryptic chinese-to-english translation that more or less said what they posted on their web site. So they never really answered my question and wouldn't explain their answer in any level of detail after another two email exchanges.

Other Thoughts: I didn't opt for the battery backup of the cache, but now I'm wondering if I should have. The server must be backed up by a UPS because if the cache isn't persisted, you can end up with some corruption during a power dropout. A battery would help the controller to recover, which is a nice thing.
If you choose to use SATA disks, NewEgg really doesn't have a selection of SAS-to-SATA fanout cables. I had to find mine through SCSI4ME, which offers them at a fair price and great quality. If you buy cables, make sure you get them with a latching connector so they don't inadvertently wiggle out on their own.

5 out of 5 eggsFast

Pros: This controller is nice espeically because it has the cables that support plugging into the backplane of a SAS controller. We are running it with 8x2TB WD enterprise drives in a RAID6 and it works great. Build time on the array was faster than I expected, even with a 1GHz+ processor. 2GB of cache makes this a speedy RAID card. Comes with 3 SFF-8087 cables.

Cons: The LED lights for activity and 'drive present' work with the, but I can't get it to identify drives, which is necessary so you don't pull the wrong drive when one fails. It's nice that the activity and drive present work with the SFF-8087 cable
