Pros: Works with older ARC12x3 equipped with DDR2 onboard RAM.

Cons: This card is NOT compatible with newer ARC12x4 adapters, or any adapter with DDR3. Save yourself the hassle of a VERY painful customer service interaction to exchange it.

Other Thoughts: If you have a ARC12x4 adapter, you need a ARC-6120-T121 battery backup.

2 out of 5 eggsCompatibility Issues

Pros: Works with ARC-1213

Cons: Does not work with ARC-1214-4i

Other Thoughts: Description says that it is compatible with all ARC-12XX. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Contacted Ben @ areca and he immediately was able to verify the problem. Battery information is one area Areca could provide more transparency.

3 out of 5 eggsA Must-Add, BUT...

Pros: Without this card you're only getting half of what your ARECA adapter can provide in terms of performance -- if that. This unit is not optional if you actually want the performance you paid for. While you CAN force writeback caching on the adapter without this installed, DON'T -- if the power goes off you will get silent data corruption. Therefore this is a must-have accessory.

Cons: It's utterly scandalous that there's no $20 (or even $40) battery-only replacement option, given that the battery is a plug-in. C'mon guys, over $100 for a replacement $5 lithium battery? I think not. But never fear, provided you can find a replacement with the requisite three wires (including sense), it fits, and you can solder it's replaceable. I've done it and it works. Yeah, perhaps "not recommended", but anyone who thinks I'm forking up over $100 for a $5 battery has rocks in their head. Change 'em out every couple of years so you know the capacity is good.

Other Thoughts: There's just no argument available for NOT buying one of these if you have an Areca adapter. The performance differences on writes are immense and there is no way around this purchase if you actually want the adapter to provide the performance you paid for. This really ought not be an optional accessory, but it is what it is.

4 out of 5 eggsExpensive

Pros: - Allows you to safely enable write-back cache.
- Lights up and emits a quiet beep every few seconds if you have an unclean shutdown and the battery is powering the cache.
- Works with the ARC-12xx, ARC16xx, and ARC-1880 products. Doesn't work with the new ARC-1882ix.

Cons: - Overpriced for a battery.
- Had to buy a replacement after couple years as the controller reported the battery was no longer good.
- No alerts/warning about the bad battery, so effectively I was operating in an unsafe mode for several months. (Maybe I just didn't have the alerts configured; suggest you test)

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if Areca designed these in such a way that the user could replace the battery on the module with a cheap, generic one. Also if it squawked a bit more when the battery needs replacement.

3 out of 5 eggsToo expensive

Pros: It does what it is supposed to do, and that is to give the write-back cache power in case of a power outage or other hardware failure.

Cons: Too expensive for just a small circuit board, what is basically a cordless phone battery, a black expansion slot bracket, and a small ribbon cable.

Other Thoughts: With write-back disabled, for each drive added to a RAID5 or RAID6 array, the less write advantage you gain, and is actually quite pathetic. With write-back enabled, the gains are almost linear in scaling.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Works great

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I like how Areca has unified all their battery modules into this one unit that works for all. Great idea!

The cable is long enough that you should be able to install this in any empty slot, although it would be nice to have a second mounting method that didn't take up a PCI slot in case you don't have a spare.
