SAS builds on parallel SCSI by providing higher performance, improving data availability, and simplifying system design. The SAS interface supports both SAS disk drives for data-intensive applications and Serial ATA (SATA) drives for low-cost bulk storage of reference data. The ARC-12x3-4i/-8i support directly attach 4/8 SAS ports via 1/2 internal SFF-8087 connector. The ARC-12x3-4i/8i RAID controllers are low-profile PCIe cards, ideal for 1U and 2U rack-mount systems without needing the expansion capability. These controllers utilize the same RAID kernel that has been field-proven in existing external RAID controller products, allowing Areca to quickly bring stable and reliable RAID controllers to the market.

1 out of 5 eggs1 drive fail = lost array

Pros: Lower cost (compared to other 8-port cards with similar functionality).

Cons: Difficult to install in a VMware environment.
RAID controller firmware is weak (very little in the way of disk testing or maintenance).
Not effective as a RAID controller as 1 drive failure causes the array to disappear (details below).

Other Thoughts: I purchased 2 ARC-1222's about 3 years ago. Later I purchased an ARC-1223 for a 3rd server.

About 1 year ago, one of the arrays became inaccessible. Power cycling the hardware would bring it back on-line for a random amount of time (sometimes minutes, sometimes days). We were able to copy everything off to an external array after which we ran lots of tests. Turns out one of the hard drives had gone bad but the Areca card never reported it and in fact a volume check failed to report any errors. When we removed that drive and replaced it with a new one, the array stopped disconnecting.

About 3 weeks ago, same problem with one of the other ARC cards - array goes offline with no errors reported. It's a MAJOR hassle to try to isolate a bad drive in a production RAID system!

I'll be buying more expensive but more reliable Intel and Adaptec cards from here on out. It's already cost me way more in time and headache than I saved on these.

2 out of 5 eggsA Gamble

Pros: Areca had responsive customer service.

Cons: I installed this card on a server running Debian. I needed to update the bios for the mb to even detect the card. After that, the card would not detect any drives. I troubleshooted with Areca for 2 weeks until they determined the card was defective.

Other Thoughts: Defective Hardware is just something that happens. Areca's customer service was very good. The best advice I have is if you are going to buy this card, buy it through the great company that starts with an A that doesn't charge for returns. Despite the card being defective, I was charged $10 to return it to there warehouse that is an hour away from my house. Not worth the gamble to buy this product through Newegg

5 out of 5 eggsResponse to RAIDguy

Pros: See my review on the ARC-1223-8I-MS (same card, different cables)

Cons: Same as above

Other Thoughts: RAIDguy mentions needing the SAS->Sata fanout/breakout cables. The ARC-1223-8I-MS has these cables instead of the SAS->SAS cables included with this card.

4 out of 5 eggsNeeds extra cables for use with SATA drives

Pros: Speedy delivery, secure packaging, nice price.

Cons: Newegg description seemed to me to indicate that the card and/or box contents could support multiple internal SATA as-is (by listing the card's internal connectors as "8 x 6Gb/s SAS/SATA HDDs"). Instead, the card has two SFF-8087 connectors and cables which WILL NOT support SATA drives as-is. At least one additional cable, Areca part number CBL-SFF8087-4SATA available from ArecaDirect at will be needed at a cost of $19 per plus shipping. Seems newegg doesn't offer that specific cable at all as of this writing.

Other Thoughts: Will revisit this review after being able to use the card. Tsk tsk on newegg and tsk tsk on me for making an assumption in spite of the pictures suggesting that newegg's description was incorrect.
