5 out of 5 eggsExceptional card

Pros: This card is fast. I bought this card 4 years ago. Since then my HTPC has been shipped 5 times, reassemble 3 times, I even had a 1 yr period where it and the hard drives were sitting in a box. I just rebuilt my server finally a couple days ago, and after a minor problem (see other thoughts) the RAID came up just as I left it.

Cons: I have a hard time putting any CONS in here because this is a classic example of "you get what you pay for" and not in the typical cheap or negative way. You are buying a professional, high quality device. Not a phone number to call to speak to a "tech guy" that will tell you to update your drivers/firmware/ect.

Other Thoughts: I'm not knocking this product because its not really an defect or flaw, just something to know is a possible issue. I had two builds where I ran into the same issue (albeit 2 yrs apart). The card threw "BIOS Disk not found" errors at POST until I installed the motherboard chipset drivers.

I am going through the features and yes, it is not a typical layout/organization. But just like trying to use a Windows PC after using Apple for 10 years, you have to get use to it.

3 out of 5 eggsfast, (so far) reliable, HORRIBLE interface

Pros: from tests so far its working at the speeds its rated at. I've managed to setup a 12 drive raid array successfully but with a steep learning curve with the interface and guide.

untested, but the ability to upgrade the ram one day would be nice.....but (see below)

Cons: - awful interface
- poor documentation
- memory upgrade requires expensive server ram.
- numerous features are still a mystery even after several searches online.
- one of the most counter-intuitive user interfaces I've ever seen in a computer product. utterly frustrating to understand and use.

Other Thoughts: If I hadn't used other products I'd say it was the norm but I detest the menu and interface on this thing. There's no computer software available to monitor the settings and when initializing discs.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Easy install and massive feature set. Awesome performance. Now set up with six OCZ Vertex 4 VTX4-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) in Raid 5 with a hot spare. I Did have one kick out after a few hrs, so I ordered a couple more and installed one as a hot spare. Going on a month now without a problem since that one SSD failure in a win 2008 server.

Cons: Dont forget the cables which are NOT included. I ordered two StarTech Model SAS8087S450 19" (50cm) Serial Attached SCSI SAS Cable - SFF-8087 to 4x Latching SATA and they worked great.

Other Thoughts: Like MC Hammer said..."you can't touch this". As long as you are spending this kind of money be sure to get the areca ARC-6120-T121 Battery Backup.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best card out there

Pros: I have owned this card for about 9 months. During that time I have been using it with consumer Western Digital Green drives (8x WD20EARS RAID5, 4x WD15EADS RAID5, 4x WD5000AAKS RAID5).
The fatal flaw with these consumer disks, is their lack of TLER (Time Limited Error Recovery) Which can induce drops within an array for drives that take longer than 10-14seconds to recover from an internal disk event.
However... I am shocked and amazed to report that I have not had a single disk drop from any array. I have been pushing them to see if I could time-out one of the disks, but I have yet to succeed in degrading any of the arrays.
Speed... This card is unreal. 8x 2TB 'Green' drives yield just over 1GB/s Read and Write. The 4x 1.5TB greens hit around 560MB/s (measured in ATTO and HDTune on Server 2008)
A review from '' showed that the Dual-ROC's can handle over 4.7GB/s on SSD's (and larger arrays) I think the only bottleneck toward those numbers is the 8x PCIe slot...

Cons: Documentation is poorly written in English, but who cares, the hardware is proven.
The only downside with Areca is that they have no advanced replacement policies - should a controller fail, you must wait 2-4weeks to receive your repaired unit, or buy a new one to hold you or your customer over.

Other Thoughts: Never had an issue with the Web-GUI, only slight quirk I have found is that it sometimes stops auto-refeshing - something no-one should care about.

5 out of 5 eggssuper fast with SSDs on Supermicro servers

Pros: This card has lots of management interfaces. The web interface is a touch quirky -- it seems like it doesn't always respond at times. You can access SMART attributes on your hard drives via this interface. It is also pretty cool that the card can send emails when certain things happen, such as drive failures, etc. The Areca is basically a computer (with a dual-core CPU) on a RAID card. All it's missing is a graphics adapter. lol.

My Areca is plugged into a Supermicro SYS-6026T-6RF+ and is running a RAID 60 array with eight Kingston SSDNow KC100 SSD drives. OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Enterprise Edition. In testing I unplugged two drives from each array and the server never skipped a beat. HD Tune Pro didn't show that much degradation in terms of IOPS when four drives were unplugged. Also, when I reconnected the drives and the Areca started to update them, there was no noticeable degradation in performance of the server. It was like nothing ever happened.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Performance is remarkable with fast SSDs. I'd buy this again in a heartbeat.

2 out of 5 eggsNot as pictured

Pros: Amazing controller, blistering speeds.

Cons: The product package pictures are false apparently, as it does not come with the SAS to SATA breakout cables. Instead I got 3 SAS to SAS extension cables. At this price, you would think it would include the breakout cables.

Other Thoughts: Newegg claims that the controller does not come with the cables that are pictured... imagine that. Aside from the poor customer service, this controller would be excellent. If only I could utilize it without buying things that are supposed to come with it. Make sure you pick up the $60 in breakout cables if you plan on buying this, because Newegg will not stand by their pictured contents.
