4 out of 5 eggsGreat Linux card.

Pros: This card uses the Marvel 88SE9480 which is supported out of the box via the mvsas module in linux kernel 2.6.32+.

Cons: See 'Other thoughts'.

Other Thoughts: Before trusting this card w/my data, I decided to 'punish' it to ensure that badness would not ensue. I have this card running in a poweredge 2950 (3) connected to a Norco DS24E, w/8 1.5TB, 9 1TB, and 7 750GB drives. I broke them up into 3 md raid6 volumes and stuck them all under a single vg and lv w/btrfs and, then ext4.

Under heavy IO, mv/cp DVD/Blu-ray ISOs around, rebalancing/defrag, causes timeouts/resets w/btrfs. Removing all the underlying 'cruft' (md and lvm) and allowing btrfs to just manage redundancy resolved the issues. And in terms of reliability, I've not had any data loss in spite of 3 1.5T drive failures. On a side note Seagate's 'recertification process' seems to be that of "If it spins up, it ships."

1 out of 5 eggsAreca ARC-1320-8X

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Appears to initialize drives located on a Norco DS-24E Expander from Windows Home Server 2011 and even formats drives. As soon as a large file is copied to Norco DS-24E the driver for this card blows up and sends Windows Home Server 2011 into a blue screen. The latest download driver (x64) initializes but does not work.

Other Thoughts: Should have purchased a LSI Raid card.
