4 out of 5 eggsXP32 Drivers

Pros: XP 32-bit support is listed on their website here:

I haven't used this varient of Areca controller cards, but I have found they support (ARC-12xx) all every version of windows I have ever needed whether 32 or 64 bit.

Cons: I haven't actually used this controller card.

2 out of 5 eggsXP Support Lacking

Pros: Works on XP 64
Hardware works great.

Cons: Misleading on XP support
Website and installation disk lacked working
XP 32 drivers, returned widows error code 39.
(Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware)

Other Thoughts: Since most XP machines have the XP 32 bit OS,
this can cause headaches for Newegg Support Staff.
Areca needs to update the drivers or remove XP 32 compatability from Newegg's Description.

4 out of 5 eggsNew FreeBSD support

Pros: Two connectors, pcie 8 lane support. Product literature states FreeBSD support. Disk transfers through this card are much faster than using the onboard sata ports on my motherboard.

Cons: I discovered after installing the card that the FreeBSD native driver did not recognize the card. Areca's web site did not have a driver for FreeBSD listed despite all of the product literature stating it was supported. However if you are looking at this card the driver was posted to their site as of 1/17/12.

Updating the firmware requires DOS.

Other Thoughts: I contacted support and they responded immediately with a "beta" driver. When I asked what issues to look out for they said there were none. So far the driver has performed flawlessly. The disk attached through the HBA are visible and behaving normally.

I was able to update the firmware using FreeDOS and building a bootable CD.
