5 out of 5 eggsGreat RAID Card

Pros: - 24 drives
- High performance. (Can flood a 1gb NIC without breaking a sweat)

Cons: - CPU runs hot. 61C while idling...
- Web interface is not good.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely buy again. It's expensive, but you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice RAID controller

Pros: Controller is very nice, fast with lots of cache for the arrays. Takes 42 seconds to register all 24 drives during boot up. Everything you would expect from a RAID controller. Have yet to play with the external SFF-8088 mini-SAS port.

Reads and writes to the 3 Plextor M3 SSDs in RAID0 array is over 1.4GBps and well over 200K IO's in the 4k 64ths tests.

SAS is over 800MBps in RAID5

SATA is over 800MBps in RAID 5 as well.

All burst read and writes are 1.8GBps until the 4GB's cache is full making this a very fast and effective card.

Cons: CPU on controller is HOT. I contacted Areca on this issue and they said the Dual Core CPU on the controller runs hotter than their older models. Mine has hit 74C / 165F a few times and loves to hover at the 60C /140F range. The tech said it was fine and that it will alarm when it reaches 105C or 221F and that I think is too hot period for electronics.

Other Thoughts: I have placed an Antec SpotCool Case Fan to help point the cool air at the heat sink on this controller and it did help a bit but I think the temps are a little too high and I hot that doesn't cause this controller to fail a few years from now.

Big plus for this is the 24 ports and the tailored configurations it has in its array tools. It is well worth the money but now I am wanting to see what the LSI can do. I am a big 3ware fan and love their cards but this is the biggest and best I could find for an affordable price.
