5 out of 5 eggsAmazing card, super easy and full of function

Pros: Picked this up to replace a 3ware 9650se that I had been running in my main home PC. Plan on utilizing the online expansion and raid migration as I add drives.

Currently running a 3TB Raid 1 with WD red drives without any problem. The card is full featured and the web GUI is super easy to use. I found that both the NIC port in band as well as the web GUI are the same interface which makes it super easy to navigate.

Spun up the 1TB drive and copied one of the old RAID 1 drives over to it with an average write speed of 114MB/s with the source drive plugged into the on-board SATA port. Noticed a slight degridation in performance when I copied with the source being on the controller card, but I think that was because I had it pulled in as pass through on the same channel, not sure though.

Cons: None thus far.

Other Thoughts: I am not utilizing this as a corporate or server environment RAID card and this is in my home PC and it will eventually be moved to a home file server. I purchased this because of the amazing features that it has as well as the fact that Areca is a rockstar when it comes to RAID controllers.

1 out of 5 eggsDead within 8 months

Pros: Worked for a couple of months, until the problems started.

Cons: Started a slow death spiral. First drives started dying. I can understand 1 or 2 drives dying, but I have replaced 5 drives so far within 8 months. Too high of a failure rate to be the drives alone. Then started the data corruption on the Raid 5 setup. And finally, it now will not even let my computer boot; Hangs at Post if the Areca card is installed. Stay away!

5 out of 5 eggsNice raid controller

Pros: * Great, solid hardware RAID solution
* Affordable for what you get
* Easy to set up
* 1Gb on-board cache
* Tons of raid levels
* 6Gb/s Sata III
* No fan, but passive cooling is just fine

Cons: Instructions are there, albeit in a strange order and you find yourself jumping around a bit to look for login default password (for me anyway).

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend Areca raid controllers to my colleagues.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent card for this price point.

Pros: RAID levels galore, about anything you need, JBOD, single disk, 1,3,5,6,30,50,60.

Easy to install/setup, it's fast, powerful, high quality.

Cons: -Instruction manual is disorganized, could be difficult to follow for someone not familiar setting up hardware RAID, although how many noobs will be spending this amount on hardware RAID. Manual jumps all over like it was written by someone with some serious attention deficit issues.

Other Thoughts: Only had this card about a week, but so far I love it. Initialized a 12TB RAID 6 in 4 hours flat using 6 Toshiba 2TB drives. BIOS setup is straightforward and easy to navigate. Http and in/out band take a bit more fanagaling but not too bad.

Can't really comment on speeds as I don't have the battery yet so no writeback as of now and I don't have my NIC's teamed yet, but I'm getting about 85-100mb/s writes over my home network with no tuning or tweaking with RAID 6.

System info states 1ghz i/o proc. and DDR3 cache, info I couldn't find when I was researching.

Overall, very happy with this card so far for this price.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great! Worth the $

Pros: Driver available for VMWare ESXi 5.5
Very easy to install and configure

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Installed this to replace windows software raid over several drives running on top of VMWare ESXi 5.5. I was getting about 25MB/sec transfer rates using windows software raid. After installing this card and configuring a RAID 5 array, I am now getting 125MB/sec transfer rates.

I do not notice any cooling issues although I do have this installed in a true server chassis with plenty of fans.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to implement

Pros: Variety of ways to access interface, either through HTTP or BIOS, in band or out. Using HDTune Pro on 9T r5 easily seeing >500 MB/sec sustained write and read times using cheap WD and Seagate consumer grade 3T drives.

Cons: >12 hour build time for a 9T r5. Another 6 hours to add 3T to the array.

Other Thoughts: Seems like a decent value if you want a real hardware RAID solution.
