5 out of 5 eggsNice little board

Pros: Not outrageously expensive for a SAS board. Good performance. The OOB management using standard 3rd party applications (http:, telnet, snmp) via an embedded Ethernet port is a real plus. The fact the drivers and utilities are all open source is a huge reason to select these cards. There are also several very useful drive control variables that can help with keeping finicky drives on-line. I purchased open boxes, and received delightfully complete packages with perfectly functional boards at a nice discount. Go NewEgg.

Cons: Although not as expensive as many high end boards out there, it is still a bit pricey. The board is a little too eager to convict perfectly good drives, although not as bad in this respect as many other controllers. This is mitigated somewhat by the ability to tweak several drive parameters that can help keep perfectly healthy drives on-line. The manufacturer's specifications are not as clear as they should be in terms of compatibility.

Other Thoughts: Areca is not the only manufacturer guilty of not providing enough specific details in the product specifications - in fact it seems an endemic problem - but they are definitely deficient in that respect, making it very difficult to know whether one should purchase the card, or not. Simply saying the board supports "Linux" is not sufficient. Many boards say that, but purchasing the board one comes to find it only supports Red Hat or perhaps SUSE. Would it really be that difficult to say "Linux (open source)" instead of just "Linux" in the specifications? At least this manufacturer does provide open source utilities and drivers, though. Many are so short-sighted and arrogant they refuse to supply source code and yet also refuse to properly support a wide variety of platforms.

5 out of 5 eggsAreca ARC-1224-8i

Pros: Good SAS 2.0 card for the price
Dizzying array of RAID levels supported
Ethernet port provides convenient http-based OOB management if you don't want to futz with the BIOS

Cons: Does NOT support SAS expanders
Shipped with back-rev BIOS / firmware

Other Thoughts: This is a very nice card overall, but I bought it specifically for the use-case of coupling it with an Intel SAS expander (RES2SV240). Areca's website implied that all their SAS 2.0 cards support expanders, but it turns out in reality only the 1882 and up versions to do so, which it a total deal-killer for me WRT this card. Not exactly NewEggs fault, and the card is otherwise a fine piece of hardware, hence the 5 eggs rating.

Flashing the firmware was a snap through the web-management thingy.
