1 out of 5 eggsTerrible (II)

Pros: Same as in my previous entry

Cons: I discovered an additional problem with this product: It does not work with Seagate HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB desktop hard drives. Interestingly, the older precursor model (board labeled SS-305 v1.22) works fine with those. A simple low-level test that attempts to write all the drive's sectors with random data, from beginning to end, fails repeatedly after a few percent. I have confirmed this with several such drives.

Other Thoughts: In addition to the reservations expressed in my previous review, I also can not recommend it if you intend to use it with the above type hard drive. There may be others it also fails to support.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: Fits 5 3.5" drives, allegedly with hot-swap function, in three contiguous 5.25" slots of a desktop case.

Cons: The weakest point are the flimsy miniature switches used to power the 5 drives on/off. They are activated through the long plastic rods that one pushes with a pencil. The problem is, some of the switches refuse to work, meaning they come on momentarily as one pushes into the rod, but refuse to "stick" (probably bad for the hard drive when one keeps trying). Others refuse to turn off. I have 6 of these cages (5 of the precursor model and one of this newer one) and 3 of them (including the new one) are affected by this problem, which prevents proper hot-swapping of at least one drive in each cage.

Other Thoughts: I can only recommend this product if you need the space savings and are willing to keep one (or more, who knows) drives per cage continually powered up (and thus not hot-swappable).
I would never have bought as many, but I am stuck with numerous drives mounted in compatible trays.

4 out of 5 eggsMy fourth one

Pros: Space-saver: 5 x 2.5-in. or 3.5-in. hard drives fit in the space of three 5.25-in. bays.

Cons: Perhaps most important of all: there is no way to have the fan kick in at less than 50 degrees C. I'd prefer an option to have it run when the drives get to 40 degrees or even 35 degrees.

The layout of the LEDs is still less than 100% desirable, because the LED for each drive is not positioned directly above that drive. This is because they have positioned the warning lights in the same row as the power/activity LEDs.

The SATA power connectors are too close together to allow the insertion of two connectors with "pass-thru" wiring. But a combination of SATA and traditional Molex connectors (or all Molex connectors) works OK.

The documentation is not clear about the function of the fan switch.

The supplied drive trays have mounting holes that suit the older hard drives with three pairs of holes but not my new 6TB Seagates that have only two pairs (no middle pair now). I'll have to drill some new holes.

Other Thoughts: The last three I have bought are a little different from the first one I bought three or more years ago: that one would handle nothing more than 2TB drives, whereas I have 6TB drives running in the newer ones.

4 out of 5 eggsA Lot of Drives

Pros: Holds 5 HDDs. Able to selectively turn them on and off. SATA cables were short ones and fit case with not a lot of cable left to deal with. Works with SATA3. Trays have holes to accept 2.5 Drives or SSD. Fan is controlled by temp switch and is quiet most of the time.

Cons: Their are some. The LEDs have a lot of bleed over when they are lit. The glow is about 40% from next to LED holes. The On/Off switches for the drive slots are tiny and recessed and require a small tool or a thick paper clip to switch. Should have included a "stow away" tool with the drive for this price. The printed writing and symbols are sideways from how you mount the cage.

Other Thoughts: This unit is functioning as it should and I have all 5 trays with HDDs. Makes it easy to boot between different OS. Generally is a nice add-on to a system, but expensive at regular price. I waited till it was on sale to purchase. Would have given it 5 eggs but too many little annoyances, but a strong 4 eggs.

Pros: Does exactly I wanted to, serve as a spare caddies for a similar unit.

Cons: Feels cheap, but the other one lasted like 5 years so I know its not.

3 out of 5 eggsNew version? Stay away

Pros: I've got 11 of these bays.. varying from 6 years to 1 year old. They have always worked well!

Have a range of drives, some bays with 5400 rpm drives, up to 15k sas drives@6gb.

Cons: I seem to have received a newer version of this cage. The old version did not have support for 2.5 inch drives (not a con for me exactly), the new one does. Back plane is completely different that the picture (which shows the old version).
SATA power connectors are too close, and are not usable together without cramming the cables in at an angle. SATA/SAS connectors are now on the opposite side of the backplane.
The new trays feel like garbage. The doors aren't as solid, and there was a definite thinning of the the metal.

The real kicker is that the backplane seems to crash if you have 10K+ drives being used all at once at 6gb. Building a RAID6 array across the 5 bays failed every time, with all drives being dropped simultaneously.

Other Thoughts: I'm not impressed at all with the new version. It really should be marketed under a new model number, because it's not the same product at all!

I'm going to be trying to return this unit.. and won't be buying more.

4 out of 5 eggsDoesn't accept right-angle connectors

Pros: Very convenient way of mounting five drives in a small space. Additional trays are readily available.

Cons: Having now obtained some high(er)-quality data cables with right-angle connectors, I was disappointed to find that the connectors on this cage face the wrong way, making it impossible to use right-angle cables. Further, the orientation of the connectors places locking clips below the connector, with the result that someone trying to unplug cables may not notice that there are locking clips and cause damage by pulling too hard.

3 out of 5 eggsFailed after 18 months.

Pros: Reasonably good price, nice indicator lights

Cons: Drive bays don't fit snugly, seem to wiggle. Turning knobs to lock the drive handles feel cheap. After about 18 months, I began to suddenly get errors across three different drives in the five drive cage. When I ran the drives outside of the cage, no errors

Other Thoughts: I have four of their red handled metal ones, and they work fine. I think this is just a bad design.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes take 2.5in. drives

Pros: It's been claimed that this does not work with 2.5in. drives, but pictures on the iStarUSA Web site show a 2.5in. drive mounted in one of these drive trays -- although only three of the four screw holes can be used. I did ascertain that the mounting holes of one of my 2.5in. drives line up with the holes in the tray, but I didn't actually mount the drive and plug it in.

Cons: Nothing to add

2 out of 5 eggsWarranty issues

Pros: Solidly built, even the trays don't feel flimsy like some others drive bays. Air flow is good, but there is a catch with it. Cables are longer than other units I've seen, not much but noticeable.

True SATA-III Pass-through. The unit comes pretty standard with features like FAN Speed, which is a pro because some are just trays, this is a hotswap bay.

Cons: The two egg rating is because of the issues I had, which Newegg resolved by total Refund and shipping label.

One of the "Open" buttons was way too sensitive, the latch would open up without warning sometimes and simply sliding your fingers across the area with little pressure would open it up.

One of the Trays required too much force. The "Open" button only goes in so far, so you had to basically press the button several times or extremely hard to release the lever.

While it was advertised full 1 year warranty, when RMAing Newegg showed in big red letters "The warranty for this unit has expired, see manufacture website for additional options" Those -Additional Options- Cost money.

The issue with the Airflow - While it's moving air the top and bottom drive don't get much flow as the back of the bay is a circuit board with some gaps in it, this makes the top and bottom drive warmer than the rest, noticeably so.

Needs a "Pen" to turn the drives on and off.

Doesn't do 2.5

Other Thoughts: If the Warranty hadn't expired on newly sold products, I probably would have got a simple replacement.

Tray vs Trayless - I get Tray version because they usually give you the option to install 2.5" drives. They also are designed to fit the largest 3.25" drive, but have no issues with half-heights or SSD Drives.

This unit however, is JUST 3.25" drives. While it was not an issue I do plan on keeping this for a while, the lack of 2.5" Support was a little surprising for a Tray Hotswap.
