5 out of 5 eggsgreat rails!

Pros: universal
strong
easy to modify

Cons: none really

Other Thoughts: these rails worked great though my rack is not a square rail rack these rails still worked fine these screws fit right through the 10-32 holes that are in the rails!

4 out of 5 eggsGood cheap parts

Pros: I bought 3 of these for a home rack project and for the most part they are performing quite well.

Cons: As other reviewers have mentioned the metal washers are difficult to align properly and seem flimsy. This is only really a problem with tight clearances like my build where I have a 12U rack full of cases. If the rails aren't aligned perfectly the cases will rub or not move at all. The plastic clips also seem flimsy but they haven't broken yet. For the money I really can't complain.

Other Thoughts: These were shipped to me just as they were from the factory. They had very poor packaging with only one small piece of tape over each end. Two of the three rails I ordered came fine but the last one arrived open at both ends and missing parts. I am dealing with the shipping company to fix the problem but they should have been packaged better to begin with. These are thin boxes with heavy parts inside so more thought should have been given to they way they were packaged shipped. Overall I am happy with the purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsRequire patient to install

Pros: The rail is working properly for a 1U server. For heavy server, sliding the rail is not smooth but still work very well.

Cons: Installation of the rail required 360⁰ access to the rackmount to properly screw the rails on the bracket. Otherwise, you need to be flexible enough to reach the opposite side of the rail to screw the bolt. Still, it's doable. You just need patient.

Other Thoughts: Since the rail is really cheap, I shouldn't complain about the design of the rail...

2 out of 5 eggscheaply made, mis-described

Pros: Looks to be a great idea. Square washers center the brackets properly on the posts. Most parts well-made.

Cons: The washers are to thin to bear the load. Not helping is the fact that the rails are too short to mount in a 30" rack (The don't span the gap between the brackets in a way that allows them to be secured properly.

Other Thoughts: I suppose I'll have to shell out the necessary cash to get proper rails.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: They are fairly well made and aren't ridiculously priced like most rails.

Cons: Plastic rail lock, but I knew that already. Mounting hardware was not included with one of my rail sets. Not Newegg's fault. I'll try to contact iStar and see if they can give me a hand.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of sets of these for a home file server and firewall. As others have said, these are made to work with "square hole" racks, but not with standard cage nuts. The brackets are threaded and there's square washers that fit into the holes on your rack. When mounting you screw through the washer into the bracket with the rack sandwiched inbetween. Lose the washers(or in my case don't get them to begin with) and you'll have a very difficult time making these work.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Just installed these in my 23" deep homemade rack on my Norco RPC-250 and RPC-251, and they fit perfectly. Great, solid construction. Confidently handled a 2u server full with 6 hard drives, not a light sucker by any means.

Cons: Plastic release levers, like others have mentioned could break under heavy use.
Slightly on the large size (.5 inch on each side of the chassis) for most racks
Intended for square-hole racks, however if you just don't use the square-hole adapters, it fits fine in a standard 10/32 threaded hole rack.

Other Thoughts: My rack was purposely built just a tad on the wide side with these rails in mind. I have exactly 18" available between the vertical rack posts. If you have much less then that available these likely won't work and you'll need to use light-duty rails that are much thinner.

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't really fit

Pros: Very functional, seem sturdy enough, good price

Cons: Doesn't fit

Other Thoughts: This will NOT fit a 20" deep rack. The brackets are too long. I had to cut them down with a dremel to make them fit.

My other issue is that, once the rails are installed, there is not enough width left for many cases to fit between them. As a result, NONE of my cases will work with these rails (or, I suspect, with most rails). That's not iStar's fault, because they have to take up space. Nor is it NewEgg's fault. However, newegg and iStar should both provide clearer information about what width of case will fit in a standard 19" rack once these rails are installed.

If you can make them fit, these are very nice rails for the money. And newegg's shipping was awesome -- I received the rails the day after I ordered them, and I didn't pay for that speed of shipping. I'm sure if I returned them NewEgg would oblige. However, given what I already paid to ship them to me, and what it would cost to have them shipped back, I'll probably hang on to them and find some other use.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't work with my iStar case

Pros: At least they're made of metal

Cons: iStar rails don't work with iStar case

Other Thoughts: Purchased these along with an iStarUSA D313V2MATX-T5P case. The case has three holes per side for the rails, but the slots in these rails only line up with the front two holes, leaving the back of the case (where the heavy power supply resides) without adequate support. You'd think that iStar rails would work with all iStar cases!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Newegg Customer:
Thank you for choosing the iStarUSA brand to be part of your total computing system. We proudly stand behind our products and hope that you will find your next purchase an iStarUSA brand.

Although the D-313V2-MATX, a short depth rackmount chassis at 15”, maximizes space in your rackmount rack or cabinet, it does not have the body depth to mount sliding rails. Please kindly check with our technical support team if you have any questions regarding mounting of the rails.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value

Pros: Works about as well as you'd expect from a pair of cheap rack rails. Beats the pants off of pulling the whole chassis off the rack every time you want to service it.

Cons: The glide isn't too smooth and there's a fair amount of wobble. Also, as another reviewer noted, the plastic locking tabs feel weak and might break under heavy use.

Other Thoughts: Attached to my Norco model 450 case just fine. Seems to be designed for a square-hole rack as other have noted. You insert a screw from the front side of your rack, through a hole in your rack, into one of the rail's brackets. Nonetheless, these rails worked well enough in my round-hole rack. The holes in my rack are sized for #10-32 screws. These rails use #8 machine screws. The screws are small enough that they slipped right through my rack's screw holes and so attached to the rail brackets as intended. It's always nice to avoid breaking out the drill. No harm, no foul.
