2 out of 5 eggs5.25" to 3.5" Hot Swap Drive Bay

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-RED 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Easy to swap drives when one goes bad or just to try out different Operating Systems.

Cons: First, the trays have been redesigned and you can no longer mount 2.5" drives to them even though they still come with the screws to do so. Because of the cut-out for the fan, there is nothing to mount to. The older trays will mount 2.5" drives and will work with these bays. Second, if the fans quit working it is difficult or impossible to find replacements because of the proprietary design. There is no warning or indication of a fan failure.

Other Thoughts: I had four of these mounted vertically in a 4u iStar Rack Mount case. Had them connected to an LSI RAID controller and running 4 HGST 2TB 3.5" hard drives. Removed all of the drives one day while doing some maintenance on the server and they were so hot they literally burned my fingers. Removed all of the drive bays to investigate and found that two of the fans had seized up and the other two were barely working. I don't know how long the drives had been running that hot or how the drives even survived after being subjected to that kind of heat since they run 24/7. Since I require my RAID to be stable and reliable, I ditched these and suspended the drives from the top of the cage in free air and mounted two 80mm fans to keep them cool. It's no longer easy to replace them without removing the server from the rack but maybe since they are running at least 50 to 60 degrees cooler, I won't need to do so.

I will probably replace with two of the iStar BPU-230 model. They will mount three 3.5" drives in two 5.25" spaces giving me two more drives for the RAID, and they have standard 70mm fans on them to keep them cool which are also easier to replace. I have two of these already and the drive trays are compatible between the different models and can mount 2.5" drives on them.

Surprisingly, no drives were harmed or lost due to EXCESSIVE heat.

5 out of 5 eggsReally nice, best choice

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-RED 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Unlike some the other removable drive bays that I have tried, this one has good fit & finish, and good airflow. I have been using them on all my desktop computers for more than a year. The other brands just don't compare. Cooling is just fine even if you stack them one right on top of another. They keep my 2 TB WDC Black drives at 41C, and lower performance Green drives at 34C.

Cons: The fan is the first thing to go. I haven't been able to find replacement fans anywhere that fit, but it is easy to remove the fan and relubricate it, which is usually all that it needs to make it fit for service for quite a while. I've had to do that on two fans out of 11. If you run a program like HDTune or Active Hard Disk Monitor, it will alert you if a fan dies and the temperatures trend too high.

Other Thoughts: If you search around, you can find just the removable hard drive carrier, which is very useful for how I use them. I have about 50 carriers for my 8 drive bays. As far as I can tell, Newegg doesn't sell them, which is too bad.

5 out of 5 eggsRemovable SATA Drive

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-RED 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Overall a good deal. Installation and use are straight forward. Solid construction. No problems as of yet. Good price and as usual very good delivery on NewEgg's part. Diffidently a good investment as compared to other removable drive enclosures.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It would be a added value if you could just buy the hard drive enclosure separately from the case mount. This way I could use multiple hard drives and not have a lot of extra case mounts laying around

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-RED 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Chassis & rail have full metal construction; Very well-built.
80mm low-profile turbo fan mounted on the underside provides plenty of airflow where your hard drive needs it most.
On/Off switch allows you to leave the drive in-place without actually powering up the drive.
Direct connection between MoBo and chassis, and direct connection between chassis and hard drive means *ZREO* loss in data transfer speeds!

Cons: Not really a con; more of a nitpick, but I feel that the On/Off button should be a little more obvious. (A different color perhaps?) It is easy to overlook that it's there.

Other Thoughts: I use mine to house a 750GB slave drive used to clone my master drive once a week. I then store the clone for safe keeping. Before, when I was using an external USB2.0 connection, it would take 7 hours to clone 700GB. With the iStar, it takes less than two.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly What I Needed

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-RED 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: I tried Dual Booting and didn't really like how things were going with it. I know have two of these and will purchase two more here shortly. NO More problems with my system. I put my Vista Drives in and I have a Vista System. I change them out and have an XP system! TWO Machines for little cash invested! PLUS I like to try out new things like Linux and I will be taking some Server courses. Way trash your everyday system or bring it down even for a few hours by mistake when you can pull out your Everyday system and Put in another drive tinker with it and then swap it again whenever you want?!

Cons: I wish\Hope Newegg will look into selling spare trays (hint even more colors) from iStarUSA I for one will buy some. Hint to iStarUSA I would also like an expandable rack to put the spares in. As of this time my other two will remain in my open bays in a disconnected state. No place else to keep them for now.

Other Thoughts: It's quiet and stays cool. As someone else said just buy them they are great! Oh and maybe change the color of the power button. I'll say no more on that ;)

5 out of 5 eggsBest purchase I ever made

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-RED 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Well built, Light weight, easy to install, compatible with both SATA1.0 and SATA2.0 (switch in the back). Own fan and aluminum case ensure drive cooling. Drive fits in perfectly.

Cons: HDD LED for SATA1.0 requires the use of extra connections (included in the package) - Not a major drawback tho.

Other Thoughts: I'm running a Western Digital 1TB SATA2 3.0GB/s hard drive in this bay flawlessly. Buy this product with your eyes closed. You will love it.
