5 out of 5 eggsWell Built! Easy to Use!

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLUE 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Very well constructed and designed. Lever works very well. Drives ARE Plug and Play (if you know what you're doing).

Cons: Wish it came with two removable shelves.

Other Thoughts: Okay. This IS Plug and Play with Windows 7. Here's how...
1) Install rack and cables inside computer (hook up both sata and power cables)
2) Boot computer without removable shelf (aka drive) slid into rack.
3) Log into Windows
4) Push drive in so its ready. Note: Nothing will happen (which is normal).
5) Go to Start button and type "disk management" in seach area
6) Click on "Create Partitions/Format Drive"
7) A pop-up will come up asking if you want to "Initialize" Drive (this would be the one you just installed) and click "Yes."
8) On bottom of page, Right Click on the Drive that has no "Volume"
9) Left click on the pop-up that reads "Create Simple Volume"
10) This will take you through a wizard where you can partition, format, and label the drive. (Choose Quick Format and NTFS format)
11) When complete, the drive will pop up and anytime you plug it back in it will act like a removable flash drive.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for a backup drive

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLUE 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: -Very good solid all metal build quality. Best I've seen.
-Quiet fan.
-Easy to install.
-Power on/off button instead of keys...no losing those.
-Opens, closes slides drive in easily.
-Your hard drive mounts to the tray, tray mounts to the drawer, drawer to pc. Some other manufacturers use a pass through from tray through the drawer so you would be plugging and unplugging the actually hard drive from the pc each time your remove the tray.

Cons: -Black on black power on/off button. I had to color it so I could see it.
-If you plan on removing the tray from the drawer, there is no flap.....you'll be staring at a hole in drive bay.

Other Thoughts: I use this for running a clone backup on my other hard drive. I only power it up once a month, run Acronis for the clone, and then power my drive back down. No problems what so ever. Great piece of mind and my second hard drive is hardly ever spinning.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's 5 Stars are well earned.

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLUE 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Simple to install & use. Very intuitive.
Everything but a screwdriver is included- wiring to tie into case's HD indicator LED is included as well.
Well put together- better than average.

Cons: Screws for mounting the drive into the tray are somewhat unique- the low profile screw head is required for clearance. One of the retaining tabs is plastic instead of metal. In spite of this, unit deserves it's rating for being better than average.

Other Thoughts: While a design not requiring mounting screws is possible, might not be worth the extra issues of cost and reliability that such a solution might entail. Would have been better to have a design that could tolerate screws with more regular heads. In spite of this, this is better than average in construction and design.

5 out of 5 eggsRE: here is how to quickly swap drives.

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLUE 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: In regards to the post below from 2/11/2010 9:42:17 PM that states Win7 will not recognize a drive you insert and turn on.

This is not true. In the BIOS you must set the SATA mode to either RAID or AHCI to allow for hot swapping. If you use IDE mode then I can imagine you would have issue, and personally, I wouldn't reccommend attempting to hotswap in IDE mode. I'm running in my sata controller in AHCI mode and when inserting and powering on the drive it is immediately recognized by the OS.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Do not just simply enable AHCI in the BIOS if you installed Win7 while SATA was in IDE mode. To switch to AHCI you must:
1) Set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci\Start=0
2) Reboot, enter BIOS, change SATA mode to AHCI
3) Save and Exit BIOS
4) Boot into Win7 and after MS AHCI drivers get installed either stick with those or download and install your chipset's AHCI/Raid drivers.

Welcome to hotswapping.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with IcyDock 2.5" to 3.5" drive converter

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLUE 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: I've been using these for quite awhile now and they work great. I recently upgraded to a 2.5" SSD for my primary OS and the IcyDock 2.5" to 3.5" converter (search NewEgg for MB882SP-1S-1B) worked like a charm.

Cons: Drive activity light does not work with the SSD/IcyDock Converter. Not sure of the culprit but the activity light works on my case so not a big deal.

5 out of 5 eggshere is how to quickly swap drives.

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLUE 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Very well made. Tray fits nicely and locks securely with a satisfying snap locking mechanism. The fan cools the drive by taking air through the front of the tray and exhausts through the BACK (not the bottom) so I could sit it between DVD-ROM drives for instance. Normal length. Has regular SATA and power ports in the back. Wire to hook the rack to the mobile HDD light port (while still keeping the regular HDD light to case)-nice touch.

Cons: Here goes. Windows 7 will NOT recognize a drive that you just stick into the rack and turn on! It is NOT plug and play like a USB drive. First and MOST IMPORTANT is that the drive must be formatted (I would assume NTFS) or forget it. The second is that you have to have Windows 7 LOOK for the new drive. Easiest way is to power it up and type in "disk management" in the start button search box. Under the ACTION drop down, rescan disks. That should make the drive show up. To REMOVE the drive, download and run a program called HotSwap. Click on it to safely remove the drive BEFORE turning off the power to the rack. That will let Windows 7 release the drive (otherwise need to reboot).

Other Thoughts: Here is how to use the tray with easily swappable hard drives. Open the tray, remove the hard drive, stick in another hard drive and reinsert. NO SCREWS NEEDED.
Tough! There is NO extra space on the tray at all and I HAD to use their very flat headed screws. There is also no extra room in the tray.
Tape and drill. Use a 9/64 inch drill bit, drill out the screw holes on the bottom of the hard drives in the middle of the bottom. Use a piece of tape to mark on the drill bit the depth of the screw so as not to drill too deep. Drill vertically with the shavings falling away from the electronics of the board.
Put the flat screws into the middle holes. Using either electricians tape or duck tape, tape the screw down using the RIDGE to line up the edge of the tape and cut the extra off the edge. I also put a piece of tape inside with a notch where the screw is.
Now a hard drive will just slide into place when put into the tray. Wiggle if needed. Insert tray!

5 out of 5 eggsStellar Product

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLUE 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: This is an exceptionally well made product. Case is aluminum with plastic front. Nice large fan in the bottom (unlike most dockable drives) to draw away heat into the case. Fan is quiet, keeps my drives cool. Very pleased so far. Comes in four (handle) colors.

Cons: Power button is difficult to distinguish in a poorly lit room. This model doesn't have a lock on it.

Other Thoughts: If you have multiple drives with multiple OS's, like me, make sure you look before you pull...almost pulled the one in use once. Consider the locking model if you have young children.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Removeable Unit

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLUE 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Easy to Install. So far all stand alone features work. Turning it off and on while computer is running works great. Games play from it as good as being direct connect to the MB.

Cons: None so Far

Other Thoughts: NewEgg could sell the extra/replacement drawers. Can get them from the Cali location
