1 out of 5 eggsOverpriced Junk

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLACK 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: None

Cons: I've had two of these for less then 1 year now. One of them seems to have failed and does not allow my RAID controller to recognize the attached drive. Before someone asks: Yes, I have already replaced the drive with a NEW known good drive and I get the same results. The other one works but the fan sounds like it is about to fly apart any minute. Save your money and buy something else.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent but noisy after only a week or two.

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLACK 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Seem pretty solid and easy to use.

Cons: Disappointed after buying 10+ of these the fans at least 4 of them have become very loud in that short time.

Other Thoughts: ok for server room wouldn't use on a desk machine because of the noise.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat device

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLACK 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: It works without fail. No speed degradation, stability, or cooling issues to date.

Sturdy handle and aluminum drive sled.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I love this item! I own two of these and use it to swap large amounts of data to and from clients' machines that don't have USB 3.0.

Note: If you want to hot-swap with these on Windows systems you cannot use the usual, built-in "safely remove devices" function as they won't show up in the list if your SATA configuration is correct. You must use a third-party utility such as HotSwap! which works beautifully on my Win 7 systems.

5 out of 5 eggsReally Nice Enclosures!

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLACK 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: ---
- better than expected in every way
- looks better than they do in photos
- solid construction / good workmanship
- nice SATA II cable with latch included
- drive tray ejects easily from enclosure
- manual is brief but sufficient for the task
- vented at front and rear of enclosure for fan
- ON/OFF switch for drive/fan is a great feature
- latches seem solid and secure, and are not plastic
- looks better mounted in case than I had anticipated
- no loss of speed due to drives going into this enclosure
- drives stay cool, fan didn't add any noticeable noise to system

Cons: ---
- no lock... not a con for me, but might be for some users

Other Thoughts: ---
- green LED = HD power
- amber LED = HD activity
- includes 4 flat screws for mounting drive to tray
- includes small bag of screws for mounting enclosure to case bay
- you'll feel the heavy build quality even before removing them from the box
- will definitely buy these again, might buy a couple more just to have extras on hand

5 out of 5 eggsiStar + Win7 = WIN!!

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLACK 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: ok, so if you have a few HDD's (7 or more) and your case only holds 5, what do you do??? you buy a few of these is what!! my problems have been solved thnx to these racks.

these are better used with a mobo that can hot swap sata through ahci & Win7. i have been swapping these daily and have had no problems. i recommend them!

Cons: none....... well actually the fact that iStar doesnt sell the trays by themselves!

Other Thoughts: if you need more trays you have to buy the whole thing!....... or buy the 4 tray enclosure like i did.

5 out of 5 eggsHere is how to use tray without screws.

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLACK 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Very well made. Tray fits nicely and locks securely with a satisfying snap locking mechanism. The fan cools the drive by taking air through the front of the tray and exhausts through the BACK (not the bottom) so I could sit it between DVD-ROM drives for instance. Normal length. Has regular SATA and power ports in the back. Wire to hook the rack to the mobile HDD light port (while still keeping the regular HDD light to case)-nice touch.

Cons: Here goes. Windows 7 will NOT recognize a drive that you just stick into the rack and turn on! It is NOT plug and play like a USB drive. First and MOST IMPORTANT is that the drive must be formatted (I would assume NTFS) or forget it. The second is that you have to have Windows 7 LOOK for the new drive. Easiest way is to power it up and type in "disk management" in the start button search box. Under the ACTION bar, rescan disks. That should make the drive show up. To REMOVE the drive, find and run a program called HotSwap. Click on it to safely remove the drive BEFORE turning off the power.

Other Thoughts: Here is how to use the tray with easily swappable hard drives. Open the tray, remove the hard drive, stick in another hard drive and reinsert. NO SCREWS NEEDED.
Tough! There is NO extra space on the tray at all and I HAD to use their very flat headed screws. There is also no extra room in the tray. I did not want to screw in the drive.
Tape and drill. Use a 9/64 inch drill bit, drill out the screw holes on the bottom of the drives in the middle of the bottom. Use a piece of tape to mark on the drill bit the depth of the screw so as not to drill too deep. Drill vertically with the shavings falling away from the electronics of the board.
Put the flat screws into the middle holes. Using either electricians tape or duck tape, tape the screw down using the RIDGE to line up the edge of the tape and cut the extra off the edge. I also put a piece of tape inside with a notch where the screw is.
Now a hard drive will just slide into place when put into the tray. Wiggle if needed. Insert tra

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT QUALITY PRODUCT

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLACK 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: I LIKED THIS UNIT SO MUCH THAT I JUST ORDERED ANOTHER FOR AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO USE AS A BACKUP TO CLONE MY INTERNAL HARD DRIVE.IT IS BUILT SO WELL AND LOOKS SO GREAT THAT I STOPPED LOOKING FOR OTHER EXTERNAL ENCLOSURES.THE THING I LIKE BEST IS THAT IT HAS A POWER BUTTON ON THE FRONT,UNLIKE ALL OTHER EXTERNAL ENCLOSURES.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: I WAS LOOKING AT ONE EXTERNAL ENCLOSURE WITH A FAN,AS THEY ALL SHOULD HAVE ,AND ALMOST BOUGHT IT UNTIL I READ A REVIEW THAT SAID THE HARD DRIVE WAS NOT SECURED TO THE UNIT.IT COULD SLIDE AROUND IF YOU MOVED IT.WELL,THIS UNIT SECURES THE HARD DRIVE WITH FOUR INCLUDED SCREWS.I LOVE IT AND NEWEGG ROCKS.

5 out of 5 eggsSturdy, ...

This review is from: iStarUSA T-7M1-SA-BLACK 1x5.25" Bay Audio Series SATA Mobile Rack

Pros: Great for keeping a loud HDD suppressed, and keeps them cool. Very handy to take out and quickly swap in somewhere else.

Cons: Make sure AHCI or RAID is enabled in BIOS and also the AHCI driver for operating system is installed properly for the Hot-Swappable function to work. My Asus Striker II Extreme motherboard requires 15 steps to enable it. Looked everywhere and thats my only solution at the moment.
