2 out of 5 eggsDoes it's job, but could do it better-- A lot better.

Pros: It does what it says it does.

Cons: cheap. flimsy sleds for drives, cause difficulty in mating drives to the cage. Latches aren't positive-- I've latched, and unlatched the drives without having the drives actually engage the connectors in the rear. Mine came without any hardware for the drives. I suspect some of my issues may be that the screws I could find not being "low-profile enough". Mounting the cage in the case, the screws protrude inside and prevent removal of the drives-- another issue that could have been remedies with a small hardware pack. Unnecessarily deep design. The two-drive that I replaced is nearly 2" shorter (albeit without a fan).

Other Thoughts: Mating the drives in the cage seems to occur much easier when the cage is horizontally positioned. If its vertical, it will still mate, but it seems to require a bit more force and finagling. I replaced a 1x3.5" to 2x2.5" which doesn't require a sled and the drives mate perfectly. I really wish iStar had used a similar design.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than expected

Pros: Better quality than what I was expecting. Most people complained on it being cheap, but I only had a slight problem - see cons.

Cons: The plastic around the sata port are a little cheap, and I did break a piece of it off. Of course, it was partly my fault since I tried to get the cable that was ALMOST there to fit in. When I fit it in, it was pulling against it and part of it broke. Loosened the cable and it works fine now.

Other Thoughts: Another thing to note is people complaining about pulling drives out after its mounted in a case because the screws jut into the enclosure and block part of the hinge. Luckily, Im using an antec p182 case with the hotswap brackets installed on it. The added thickness of the brackets minimizes the protrusion into the case, but I see where it can be a problem for some. Make sure your screws are short!

4 out of 5 eggsdoes the job

Pros: It does what i want it to do. I use it for storing multiple SSDs. That is about the extent of its use.

Cons: Too expensive in my opinion. Feels loose and cheap. One of the fan's bearings starting grinding after about 5 hours. That pro to this situation is that the fan slides out fairly easily once the fan screws are taken out. The fan is powered by a two pin connector that is also loose and easily disconnected.

Other Thoughts: If I had gotten this for HDDs, I would have been mad as hell. As is, they should realize that a lot of people will buy these for SSDs, which simply do not need fans. At the very least, the jumper settings should come with LOW instead of the standard HIGH setting.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid, about as useful as an ice cube in hell

Pros: It's cheap

Cons: It's cheap, the bottom 2 bays can get blocked by the screws, so if you have mounted (with screws) the cage into your 5.25" bay like almost everyone would, the bays will get stuck coming out and sliding back in, my solution was to just screw in the front and tilt the hdd upwards when removing drives.

5 out of 5 eggsworks nicely

Pros: Works smoothly with 4 enterprise 2.5 in. 10K SAS drives in a RAID 1+0 config. Mounts perfectly into a 5.25 bay. Rear SAS/SATA connectors seem fine.

Cons: LED's are green and orange, feel a bit dated. Would prefer Red and Blue, but hey.

Other Thoughts: Overall a nice product that do does what is says it will do. Stable, good airflow, and having a single DC header to power the shelf with is a plus.

4 out of 5 eggsNo Problems

Pros: I have 4 SSD's (RAID 0) in this and it works and fits nicely in my case (Lian Li full tower).

The latches work good and have keys.

Cons: The trays feel cheap and aren't the best fit, but if you are careful they work fine.

Other Thoughts: SSD TRIM or wiper utilities do not support (Areca) RAID so with these I can pop out the drives, pop them in a different computer, wipe them, pop them back in the original computer, restore from backup and I'm going with fresh fast drives.

Maybe someday TRIM or wiper utilities will support hardware RAID but I'm not holding my breath.

5 out of 5 eggsNice item but BE AWARE

Pros: Nice formed alluminum chassis, drive cages are a bit flimsy but they will spend most of their time inside the cage.

Cons: May not support SAS as stated.

Other Thoughts: Newegg has part #BPU-124-SS listed which is a SAS/SATA chassis per mfg. The photo is of a BPU-124-SA which is SATA ONLY per mfg. I was shipped the item in the photo and not the item the part number references. Double check the order with a rep before finalizing.

1 out of 5 eggsMine came pre-broken

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cheap

Other Thoughts: Mine was already broken, sent direct from the RMA center. It came with a cable that had already been open so I am guessing this was sent back by someone else and they just passed it on to me.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We are sorry for this inconvenience. The damage could be caused during the shipping
process, you should contact Newegg and have them replace a new one for you.

Regards,

iStarUSA Support Team

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: This is an awesome, solid product. The drives swap easily and recognized instantly. it looks great in a tower

Cons: The cage is BIG... it is about 1" longer than an optical drive, so it can get in the way.
also, mounting screws tend to get in the way of a drive being swapped in and out
