5 out of 5 eggsGreat universal rail kit

Pros: These fit my 4U Logisys case with no issues. The sliders are smooth and quiet. When fully assembled, the rails feel sturdy and stable with a fully loaded 4U server case. I will be buying more of these rails as my home network expands.

Cons: The hardware that mounts the rails to the rack could be better. It's a universal system of concave square washers that fit into the square holes of a rack. The support arms are threaded and only able to accept the proprietary screws. A setup that allows for cage nuts would be ideal, but with a little persuasion, everything lines up and fits properly.

Other Thoughts: In a perfect world, these would be offered as 2 different items. One designed for round hole racks and one for square hole racks. Or, a universal Cage Nut solution would do nicely.

As other reviews have mentioned, each part is coated in a thin oil, not just the bearings. It wipes off of your rails and hands easily enough with paper towel, so keep some near by.

All you need to install these is a Philips head screwdriver and a small 5/8" (IIRC) wrench/socket to keep the hardware from spinning as you tighten it.

If you're looking for a good, cheap, and dependable universal rack system, this is it. Buy it now.

5 out of 5 eggsSmooth action and strong

Pros: Review by "Cisco Engineer" should be ignored, he/she did not install the screws in the correct orientation. The screw heads should be on the inside of the rail and the nut on the outside, then the rails will not catch on the screws as they slide.

Smooth action and strong. Can pull 4U case all the way out of the rack and at nearly 50lbs, the rails stay straight and slide smooth all the way. Not staying these rails are the best out there, but for the price...

They fit the iStarUSA D407PL-DE6BK case with ease.

Installed into an APC AR3107 (square holes), they provide the square-out washers.

Cons: The screws used to attach to rack are smaller/thinner than the normal rack screws, but 2 per side, 8 total hold a 50lbs case just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsNice slide action

Pros: Was a bit awkward to get together, but once together everything fits smoothly and unlike some lowend rail kits, this has nice smooth action.

Cons: Requires the smaller rackmount screws with the washers (provided). Would have been nice if I could have used the M4 screws that I use elsewhere in the rack.

3 out of 5 eggsiStarUSA TC-Rail-24

Pros: New egg is great!

Cons: Brief instructions. After mounting the center rails to the server case, and attaching the L brackets to the 4 post rail, I was thinking, alright! this is going smooth. Now moving onto the sliding rails and attaching them to the L brackets. I get the bolt and nut mounted on the rail, then BAM!!! slide the rail into the rack and it was stopped by the LONG bolt that was provided and was sticking out to far to slide the rail into place. Reviewed the documentation and it clearly stated, using the short bolts attach the rail to the L bracket.

Guess what? All the bolts are the same size and there are NO short bolts to use for the rail. Now I have to use my gas, money, and time to drive to Lowes to get the correct blots to use!

I will not be buying another iStarUSA mounting kit. Guess that means I will also look for another server case supplier.

Other Thoughts: L brackets are flimsy.

4 out of 5 eggsGood rail kit for the price

Pros: The rails can fit from 26 to 37 inches and are still relatively strong for the price. We mount servers that weight in the 85 pounds on it without challenge. Replaced much more expensive rails that wouldn't even extend up to 32'' which was the required length.

Cons: Seems to be cheaping on the bolts, they could have provided a couple of extra.

4 out of 5 eggsAffordable and strong with some DIY

Pros: -much cheaper than all the major OEM rail kits, and less proprietary on possible mount points
-instructions provided are in comprehensible english and the diagrams make sense.
-rails themselves are sturdy, it holds my heavy and extra long 4U SAN case extended past the door
-sliding action is smooth (use paper towels to handle inner rails during install)
-rail release is fairly tight, does not seem like it will disengage casually

Cons: Not enough bolts and nuts provided: 18 bolts, 8 nuts. 10 square washers is enough, though they are a bit thin for my HP mounts.

8 bolts are required to mount to square hole (leaves 2 spare square washers)

This leaves 4 bolts+nuts per rail, and there are 4 brackets

Only 2 leftover bolts left to mount the case rail...and no case includes those, its expected with the rail.

The nuts are slightly on the small side as well, should have flat washers used with them.

Ideally they should provide a minimum 6 bolts+nuts+washers per rail, 8 bolts for the brackets and at least 3 per case rail, then throw in a few extra for good measure.

Go to the hardware store and buy a bag of coarse 3/8"~1/2" #6 bolts, nuts and washers for a few dollars, it will be a much more secure mount and you can use their fine thread bolts for the threaded bracket holes and case rails. #8 might fit for more strength, I didn't check.

Other Thoughts: Installed in an HP mobile 1000mm deep 4 post square hole rack, I moved all my newer systems to 4U cases to tidy up the computer room. Putting the whole network inside of there and getting rid of the leftovers :)

Also I found it easier to deviate from the instructions and hard mount the front brackets (since they are a fixed mount point anyways for proper rail extension/locking) and loose mount the back brackets, then mount the assembled rail inside the rack, sliding the back brackets into position. This way you can fully tighten the bolts that would otherwise be unreachable with a socket due to the posts.
