2 out of 5 eggsSata II not Sata III

Pros: Requires only a single molex power connector

Cons: Supports only SATA I and II speeds, not SATA III.

Other Thoughts: Owners manual/spec sheet that came with the item clearly states the cage only supports SATA I and SATA II. This matches speed results observed after installing it in my system. Website information is wrong. Do not buy, if you want SATA III speed out of your hard drives.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat RAID or JBOD

Pros: Small footprint, large capacity. Two fans provide good air flow.

Cons: Latches seem delicate but I'm not yanking drives all the time. I dropped it 1 star because of that. It really may be a non-issue.

Other Thoughts: I have an iStar D400 rack case for a desktop. It seemed a no brainer when I decided to add a JBOD. Works great. I like the iStar line.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes Not Support 6Gb/s

Pros: Great form factor. Decent aesthetics. Good build quality. Uses more secure 4-pin power connector.

Cons: Contrary to the information on Newegg's product page, this hot-swap cage does not support SATA III 6Gb/s speeds. The enclosed one page user's manual states it only supports SATA I & SATA II speeds and the benchmarks I ran confirmed this.
I also have the BPU-124V2-SS which does support SATA III. Using a single OCZ Vertex 3 on the same motherboard, using the same SATA III port and SATA III cable, I obtained transfer rates with the drive installed in the BPU-126-SA that were approximately one-half those measured when installed in the BPU-124V2-SS.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, I did not discover this discrepancy in performance until after I was outside of the 30-day return window. I hope I'm not stuck with an expensive paperweight.

5 out of 5 eggsVery neat device

Pros: Well built, easy to install, just one component in a solid BSD-Based FreeNAS system. Each drive has a dedicated sata connector to ensure each drive has access to adequate throughput. Comes with SATA cables.

Cons: It is occasionally awkward to remove or install a drive - you have to fidget it around to get it in just right. There's some plastic on the front of each tray and the silver sticker looks cheap. What counts, however, is overall build quality and once the drive are in this thing rock-and-rolls.

Other Thoughts: I'm thrilled with the product. The 1-egg rating are in no way is a realistic representation of how great this thing for a home-built NAS.

5 out of 5 eggsPutting my money where my mouth is

Pros: See my previous review from 11/28/2013

Cons: Still none

Other Thoughts: Said in my previous review that I'd pay full price for this now that I own one; well, I just bought another for a separate box at full price last week.

5 out of 5 eggsGood price point

Pros: After owning this cage for around a month I couldn't be much happier about this product. The cage build (excepted the tray latch) is quite solid.

Furthermore, the product is efficient in dissipating heat, keeping disks quite cool, despite the drive density.

The product is quite easy to install, especially once you you accept the reality of the dependence on small screw as mentioned on every other review.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: While not bothered by it, I found that compared to a cage like the Norco SS400, the tray latching mechanism seems quite fragile.

IMHO this is not a deal breaker once you factor the price of this product and the fact that its core function of providing quick access to disks composing a RAID/RAIDZ array, not to provide some sort of quick connect to external/removable drives.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hot-Swap Cage

Pros: I really like these things. I put two of them in my PC so I can easily swap SSD drives that might possibly fail instead of having to take the PC apart. They are well made and fit in slots perfectly. I also like the LED setup. They are a soft blue and change to red when there is disk activity on each individual drive.

Cons: None, but see "other thoughts"

Other Thoughts: Using standard screws usually supplied with PC cases are too long for these cages and will protrude through the hot-swap case causing the individual disk drawers to bind. Use the very short mounting screws supplied with the cage to eliminate this problem. I learned the hard way.

1 out of 5 eggsCapacity sustained ENIGMA

Pros: nice looking, well piced

Cons: As usual when it comes to hard drive bays you have to dig deep to find the capabilities of the bays (HDD capacity supported),
incomplete disclosure of merchandise info is cheating on customers, manufacturer are lucky there are always people in the middle of the tech road or in a hurry that unaware of the full specs would grab the item and won't bother rerun it to avoid the hassle and the loss.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat space-saver for a great price

Pros: Clean design; solid, sturdy feel. The screws that came with this to attach your drives to the trays have nice beveled heads that fit solidly into the tray and are long enough that you get a good tight attachment of the drive to the tray. No alignment/seating issues so far. Devices were clearly recognized as SATA I or SATA III as appropriate in dmesg output, and hot-swapping so far has done with no issues whatsoever. Drives are running nice and cool, and even the CPU temperature has dropped, probably due to better air flow inside the case with the cleaner cable layout.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I am using this as part of a project to revamp my dedicated file server, moving from Linux software RAID to ZFS now that native ZFS on Linux is production ready. I am currently using only four of the 6 slots: 2 for a software RAID mirror of a pair of 250 GB SATA I drives that I'm using for the root filesystem and swap, the other 2 are for a pair of 32 GB SATA III SSDs that I'm using for SLOG/ZIL and L2ARC on the primary ZFS zpool. Adding this cage made a WORLD of difference to the snarl of cables that used to exist inside my case. I got this with a pre-Black Friday deal for $52.49, shipping included, but I would have been happy to pay full price now that I've used it.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Compact, comes with cables that are a use able length, nice to have all the power come from one 4-pin connector. While thin its also nice to see metal used for the housing, etc.

Cons: The plug and play trays are a little touchy to put in correctly. It takes a gentle touch. This is a good tray if you are using it to mount SSDs away from the 3.5 inch drives. I don't know how well it would work if you needed to swap out drives a lot.
