4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Four 2.5" drives in a single 5.25" slot. Quick access to pull/replace drives. Lock seems to hold out well enough to prevent unintentional removals. Only takes a single SATA power cable. Relatively quiet for what it is.

Cons: One of the drive activity LEDs died! Yes, the drive still works, but the light doesn't blink any more. (Docked an egg for this).

The "activate led" feature of Intel RST doesn't seem to do anything on the working leds on the cage either.

Other Thoughts: I have this housing four WD 500GB Scorpio Blacks in a RAID-10 for over 1 year.

While quiet, it is not silent--it adds two small fans and moves HDD noises to the front of the case. If silence is important criteria for you, there are better solutions.

5 out of 5 eggsWhere are the additional trays?

Pros: These is the best of the bunch because each tray has a "token" security key, which provides a level of protection against inadvertent drive removal (as in, fumbling around in the dark under your desk attempting to remove an ADJACENT drive, and instead removing your BOOT drive!). They are great for SSD and SAS mounting in high performance desktops and workstations.

Cons: After significant research, it appears that additional trays are available from the manufacturer for a stiff price of $18.00 each, plus shipping (and you have to fill out a lengthy credit card form, as well). That's >$72 for an additional 4 trays, which is almost as much as a complete unit! Can't someone offer a "package price" for 2 or 4 of these at a more reasonable price point? It would make the value of this shelf unit *much* more attractive if they were available at a discount, or cost.

Other Thoughts: FYI - The Thermaltake RC1400101A MAX-1542 & the AMS DS-524SSBK are *exactly* the same item as this, other than the color of the plastic tray latch handles (red and blue, respectively), but they are/were available for $20 to $30 less than this item. WHY is this one so much more expensive???

5 out of 5 eggsBrilliant!

Pros: Extremely well built 2.5" backplane that works exactly as the manufacturer claims. I love the ability to put 4 x 2.5" drives in a single 5.25" bay. Nice asthetics, looks great in my Cooler Master Stacker 810...

Cons: A little pricey at $87.99 but if you want a worry free unit that is built well and just works, that is the going rate...

Other Thoughts: Thanks iStarUSA! I searched a great deal for a 2.5" backplane that was worth my money that would be problem free and you did not let me down! Thanks for building enthusiast level products close to your commercial server grade!

5 out of 5 eggsVery well built

Pros: Allows you to use Four 2.5" SSD's or HDD's at once in a safe reliable enclosure while having two small cooling fans that actually cool without added noise.
Comes with a Keyed lock out to keep your drives safe and secure.

Cons: The removable tray seemed a little cheap but have had no issues with them at all.

Other Thoughts: I highly recomend this product to anyone who uses multiple 2.5" Drives.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great way to use a unused cdrom slot, gain 4 sata laptop bays. SSD RAID!

Cons: I noticed one of the screw heads was bent (maybe soft metal) that holds the drive in place. It raised the drive sled up just a little bit making it not close properly. My fault probably. Just a heads up.

Other Thoughts: I found the best way to mount the drives was put one screw in the sled to hold the drive in place. Then put the sled in the bay and close the door slowly. Then eject the sled carefully and add the last three screws without moving the drive around.

5 out of 5 eggsIndustrial Grade and Design

Pros: Built like a tank with all metal (anodized AL and SS) throughout. The individual removal trays and a extruded AL housing with two 40mm fans and just solid. Price went up but it is well worth it. If you like quality, this is it.

Cons: The mounting screws were too short in my application but Jody quickly resolved that by sending me new longer screws.

Other Thoughts: Incredible support from Jody from iStar. She went above and beyond the call of deputy to make this customer happy. I can not thank her enough for all her time and support. Thank you iStar!

5 out of 5 eggsPerfection

Pros: Superior build quality, great brand, quiet fans, and provides less clutter in my case.

Cons: Angled cables only fit on the bottom if all drives are populated. iStar chose simplicity over functionality, no big deal as you just need to use straight cables on the top two ports.

Other Thoughts: Fan noise is much lower then I expected, my machine is all about low noise. I'm grateful.

5 out of 5 eggsWow! 2.5" backplane done right finally

Pros: Fits perfect, smooth drive insertion/removal, locking bays, real *working* activity LED's, no goofy/outlandish color schemes or logos, quiet fans, has SATA power tap, SAS capable. I'm using it with four high end SATA SSD's in a amazingly fast RAID-0 setup.

Cons: As noted before, the plastic clip-on shell for each bay is superfluous with a drive installed... BUT...if the bay is empty, keep it on... this prevents the empty bay from acting is a free air intake not providing resistance to pull air into through the other populated bays.

Other Thoughts: I've tried about 5 different 2.5"->5.25 bay adapters. The biggest fault I found with the others were that they were either too fragile (plastic retention arms break/crack after 3-5 insertions), SECC (heavy, poor thermals, etc), weird colors/logos for LEDS or bezels (making it a poor choice for a nice clean looking desktop rig), no fans/active cooling, or no locks (imagine accidentally popping open the drive bay on a RAID0 setup?). This one hit all the marks. One small possible negative: it looks like this cage has two sleeve-bearing fans installed (as opposed to ball-bearing). This is a very small ding for a cage this nice... I can always swap out the fans if needed/in the event of a failure.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent SSD or SAS RAID Cage

Pros: 4 SSD or SAS 2.5 drive in a 5.25 Bay, what more can you ask for. No bottleneck as pointed out by another reviewer. Good looking Cage.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: The removable tray is made of aluminum, inserting and removing the tray is a little bit tight, could be a little smoother. Otherwise, for the price, this is an excellent space saving cage. I would definite buy another cage, but will have to buy additional controller.
