2 out of 5 eggsBad Power Supplies

Pros: Great price. Fairly good speed. Excellent for archives and backups. The RAID formats have saved me when I have had drive failures.

Cons: I have two of these units and have gone through three power supplies. Thankfully the power supplies can be ordered online and slide in like a hard drive. But the reliability of the power supplies are very poor.

Other Thoughts: I would not buy these again due to the power supply problems.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap, gets the job done, until it doesn't

Pros: Easy to setup. eSATA. Supports RAID5 with 5 x 2GB drives.

Cons: If you fill up the drive, you'll most likely corrupt the entire drive.

Other Thoughts: I've been using this product for over 3 years. It is connected to a Ubuntu server and I use it to rsync the server's internal mdraid array to the Venus T5C. I have not had a single issue until a couple nights ago when I managed to fill the entire drive. Apparently, filling the drive causes the GPT partition to corrupt and Linux will no longer mount the drive.

1 out of 5 eggsCLONE

Pros: Allows the connection of 5 drives in total.

Cons: Prior to buying I talked to AMS's Tech Support notifying them of what solution I was looking for. They let me know that this would work under the cloning tool. In fact this doesn't work. Cloning is seen as another Raid Configuration. I then called back and left a voicemail only to have it replied to be email stating "Unfortunately, the on-board chipset "Clone" features is like a RAID 1 x5. You cannot have a source data then added 4 other drives afterward to be cloned. This product is not intended to be a HDD Duplicator. For example, Source drive data will simultaneously be mirrored onto the 4 HDDs." So why not get rid of the "clone" and call it what it is RAID 5. For this I say pass on the unit.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Enclosure for Mac

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Not the greatest customer support. Very heard to understand them, sent one of the two units back a couple of times. The last time they ended up saying they were out of parts to fix it and refunded me the money I paid to have it fixed even though it broke a second time after they "fixed it". I paid shipping every time and even to have a unit they didn't fix.

After pleading several times for them to upgrade me to a unit that worked in exchange they refused.

Other Thoughts: Does not work with Lion or Mountain Lion

1 out of 5 eggsAMS VENUS T5C

Pros: Well constructed chassis and drive bay mechanisms.

Cons: Design failure renders unit non-functional.

Other Thoughts: Worked for 6 months then started "auto-ejecting" itself. Discussed issue at length with AMS (who denied knowledge of this issue which is clearly untrue) and was repeatedly told to reinstall my OS (Mountain Lion). After returning the unit for an exchange with persistence of the issue I did the OS reinstall (clean) with no improvement. After reporting this to AMS support they simply aren't responding. DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE.

3 out of 5 eggsNot that bad

Pros: The price is right. The mechanical parts are build very well. The electronics seem to be stable for the first week.

Cons: Fans are noisy and have only hi and low setting. eSata has only 3GB/s data rate, and USB3 only 5GB/s.

Other Thoughts: I replaced the fans as soon as I noticed the noise. The fans are 80x15 and not the standard 80x25. The connector on the fan is also smaller as usual. I had to change the plugs on the new fans.

1 out of 5 eggsPure Garbage

Pros: Looks cool and very sleek and compact. great for JBOD and all raids.

Cons: Does not work. I RMA'ed this product 3 times to Newegg and Newegg was great and awesome helping to solve my problem (Thank you Newegg, always great helping customers and making them happy., I also RMA'ed this product 3 more times directly to AMS which is a total of 6 times, and at final draw, I counted my losses and was left robbed and Extremely Angry. Units keep disconnecting for no reason. out of 5 drives installed only 2 to 3 work properly, but even then they disconnect for no reason. ALL HDD was tested properly with Western Digital software and other HDD softwares. I thought it was my HDD's and WD RMA'ed all my drives and made sure they gave me working one by testing the drives before they left their location. (So I know its not the drives) I called AMS and explained 6 times at different calls about my problem. they seem to stick with their story and say its end users problems not theirs.

Other Thoughts: Dont bother buying this product unless youre looking for dire headaches. Save your money and buy something else. I tossed my unit in the garbage after smashing it with a hammer. (yes I was Extremely Angry and had enough of this garbage product) - Again - DONT BOTHER BUYING THIS PRODUCT.... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED...

4 out of 5 eggsGood HW, poor SW

Pros: Standalone hardware RAID, high 5-bay capacity, USB 3.0 connection, easy setup, compact, slim, nice looking case, good build quality. Five eggs for hardware.

Cons: Software (JMicron HW RAID Manager) is a poor joke. Looks like they've spent all their time and talent to make it look "cool", and nothing was left for functionality and usability. To make a simple check of drive temperature you have to click, scroll, and click again, like you're digging for some secrets, and you will get one drive at a time only. Function to verify the array - I did not find it at all. No "help" whatsoever. Minus one egg for software.

Other Thoughts: I needed RAID-5 with USB 3.0, portable (therefore - pure hardware), and AMS VENUS T5C DS-2350C fits the bill perfectly. I threw in 5 2TB discs - two Seagates, two Samsungs, and one Hitachi - all of the "Green" variety (I know it's not recommended to use green drives in RAID, but that's what I've got). RAID-5 array initialization took maybe few seconds - I was expecting hours.

Initialized array as GPT-drive in Windows 7, accessible 8TB. Poured in 2TB of test data. Compared with the source - everything is fine. Speed is obviously limited by my USB 3.0 connection, the array itself is much faster. As expected.

Took out one of the Samsungs - software reported array in degraded state, array and data was still available, as expected. Inserted another Hitachi - array started atomatic rebuilding (blinking red LED for this drive). Rebuilding takes hours - again, as expected.

Overall, I'm happy with this purchase. Hopefully, JMicron will update the software, at least, add "verify" funct

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Flexible configuration as JBOD, Various RAID. Software has email notification for errors or other status changes.

Cons: UI software is clunky and periodically activates in the background pegging a CPU core until killed. RAID 5 is terribly slow compared to RAID 10. RAID 10 is rebuilt every time the power is cycled.

Other Thoughts: Maybe I'm just happy to finally have an array that holds alot. I'm using RAID 10 instead of 5 because 5 was really slow to write. I have five drives in the box with the fifth sitting unused since 10 requires drives in pairs. If a drive fails, I have a spare on-hand. My original intent was to use RAID 5 with all 5 drives, but RAID 5 was too slow.

I was hoping these was a way to shutdown the device by syncing the filesystem somehow. I wanted this because the RAID 10 has to be rebuilt every time I power cycle, and that takes hours. There are times I want everything powered off, but I don't like the idea of waiting 4+ hours when I power on to have a working RAID again.

Even with these minuses, it works, works well and has saved my bacon a couple of times. I can't call that a 3 star so I'm going with 4.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Worth it

Pros: Makes a nice paperweight

Cons: The first one I got only 1 to 3 of the drives would work, it varied which ones - rebooting would get a new combination but never all 5. Sent it back & got replacement - that one worked for about 6 months then I never got more than 1 a single drive to work.

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your money. Not worth it.
