1 out of 5 eggsnot a good choice

Pros: Cools fast and works well (when it works)

Cons: Unit compressor relay went out at 13 months. Paid to have fixed and two weeks later the exhaust fan exploded and rendered the unit worthless.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks great for a few years

Pros: Perfect for cooling my small single rack server room (closet). Works much better than the 18,000 BTU household window A/C unit I was using before (compressor died after a year).

Cons: After a little under 2 years of use the cold air blower fan *exploded* inside the unit. There are chunks of plastic all over the housing. So far Tripp Lite has been unable to provide me a part number or way to purchase a replacement, even though I am capable of replacing it.

Other Thoughts: If somebody from Tripp Lite who actually knows where to get parts could provide some insight for replacement that would be extremely useful. I am even willing to pay for the parts.

5 out of 5 eggsTripp Lite SRCOOL12K 120V

Pros: Thing is a beast. We had the model generation before this one for our server room and this one is a nice upgrade. We got about 4 years life out of the older model, with no upkeep (sad I know), so hopefully this one will last even longer with some tlc.

Cons: Everything has been great so far!

Other Thoughts: The tubing diameter is larger on this one compared to the older generation, so I had to rerun the ducting when we upgraded to this unit - definitely not a con, but something to keep in mind if you are upgrading!

1 out of 5 eggsDead in Under 3 Months

Pros: Restarts to pervious operating state after power failure.

Cons: The unit froze over after 2 months then shutdown 2 weeks later and will not power on.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this product. We picked this unit because the company name. We expected "Server Class" performance and support. The unit was found dead on Black Friday but Tripp was closed for the holiday weekend.

2 out of 5 eggsUnit DOA

Pros: Tripp Lite customer service was quick to, answer the phone, provide trouble shooting support, and provide an RMA.

Cons: Unit doesn't not cool. Box was very damaged though the unit looked fine with no scratches. Newegg RMA just takes too long with no options to make it faster.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend Tripp Lite. I don't think I would recommend this cooling unit in this model revision.

Manufacturer Response:

Cathy, I am glad to hear that you were satisfied with our Chicago-based customer service and I apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced with your SRCOOL12K. If your replacement model is not working to your satisfaction, please reach out to our Tech Support team (773.869.1234) one more time so they can troubleshoot your issue.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent unit - arrived DOA - blame UPS

Pros: Fairly rugged - easily hackable thermistor.

Cons: No included remote sensor - same issue as my previous review.

Had good results with previous unit, so I ordered another of these.

Unfortunately, this one arrived DOA.

No air output from exhaust.

Looked down and I can see where the squirrel cage fan looks like it's cocked.

I also see what looks like a small plastic part below it that appears to have broken free.

Newegg takes too long to process an RMA, and has no mechanism to expedite, so I called Tripplite and arranged an overnight replacement billed to our Fedex account.

Other Thoughts: This is an adequate product.

The 'spot cooling' feature is non existent, unless one is counting the hose as a 'feature.'

Real spot cooling still requires an add on sensing and control unit.

That accessory is just now hitting the reseller chain, and increases the unit cost by about 50%. If I needed that, I'd probably spend up and get a properly designed industrial unit.

This is a home portable a/c with a hose adapter.

5 out of 5 eggsNo dumping

Pros: No dumping or draining of the water condensate :)
Seems to be well made. The hoses are long enough for most all applications.

Cons: There is no skillet that will stay put on the exhaust hose [that sucka gets warm].

Other Thoughts: I am very happy with this purchase and with Newegg.

3 out of 5 eggs2 year update

Pros: All of the pro from my previous review still apply.

Warranty replacement of the unit was perfect after it died. Tripp Lite sent me a brand new unit free of charge.

Cons: My experience with this unit turned out to be the same as the consumer room air conditioning units. It developed an annoying squeak about a year after I got it. this was a high pitched plastic rubbing on plastic squeak. I did tons of things to try and stop it but nothing helped.

14 months in to it's life, the unit died. It's evaporator would freeze in to a solid block of ice. (Low refrigerant problem.)

Other Thoughts: I'd happily pay extra for a heavy duty unit that wouldn't die every 14 months. I thought that was what I was getting with the Tripp Lite over the consumer Royal Sovereign units. I guess not.

The moral of the story is not to mess with these portable units if you need a reliable unit that will run for years 24/7. Instead, get a ductless mini split system with low ambient operation. Yeah, they are $3-5k but at least they will last. The nice thing about them is that if you are in a plenum environment with a decent ceiling space or warehouse nearby, you can put the condenser there.

3 out of 5 eggsSuffers from vaporware/iffy engineering

Pros: Reasonably rugged.
Evaps condensate out the exhaust hose (like pretty much every other unit on the market.)

Cons: Not suitable for spot cooling using the provided hose.

Other Thoughts: The spot cooling feature is kind of a joke.
The only specific feature on this unit that supports 'spot cooling' is the adapter to put a hose on the outlet.

There is no remote temp sensing, so temp is sensed based on ambient air temp.

So if the a/c unit is sitting in an 85F room, with the a/c temp set to 80F, the unit will run wide open forever, since it's not sensing the cooled area, but the hot input air.

Tripplite is aware of this deficiency, and has a product that has had a delayed release because it doesn't work.

It also would appear to add about $200-$250 based on their current snmp card products. can fix it right down by pulling the covers off the unit, releasing the thermistor from it's clamp, making an exit hole for the lead, and putting the sensor in the server rack where it belongs.

My 27U rack now pulls down to 62F in under a minute, instead of burning up gobs of electricity for no reason.

I was sort of forced to buy this model, as people where I work get a little twitchy if I bust out too many power tools on a brand new unit, and this required minimal modification to overcome it's engineering deficiencies.

Manufacturer Response:

We have taken into consideration customer feedback such as yours and have upgraded the SRCOOL12K. The upgraded unit (which is now shipping) supports a new accessory, the SRCOOLNET. The SRCOOLNET allows for a remote temperature sensor on a 10’ cord to be placed away from the SRCOOL12K, and the temperature reading from this sensor would be used to cycle the cooler on and off. It will also allow for monitoring and control (including temp status and setting, unit status/mode and fan settings) of the SRCOOL12K from a remote location via SNMP. Please contact Tripp Lite’s Chicago based Tech Support Team at 773-869-1234 with any questions.

4 out of 5 eggsNice portable with warranty

Pros: Very powerful fan. Additional warranty options. Up to 5 year warranty that includes return shipping. Option to duct output to a specific rack. Can exhaust to a window or ceiling plenum. No water bucket to empty. Automatically resumes previous mode after power outage. Has a nice schematic on the side for troubleshooting.

Cons: No remote or external thermostat option.
The exhaust duct doesn't seal very well and isn't easily disconnectable. (I've seen other manufacturers use a snap on collar that worked quite well.)
Inserting filters can bend fins on radiators. Be careful. Needs a re-design by Tripp Lite.
Display is on the very top of the unit. Can be hard to see.
No 240V 60Hz option.

Other Thoughts: You must use electrical tape to create a seal around the rear exhaust duct. Otherwise hot air will leak back into the room severely reducing efficiency of the unit.

The unit is not quiet but not loud either. About the same as another 12k BTU unit that I had. BTW, I killed two consumer Royal Sovereign units before buying this one. Both lasted about 14 months each. They weren't meant to run 24/7 in a server room. Hopefully this Tripp Lite one lasts. Purchased 3 year warranty.
