5 out of 5 eggsSuitable Box for Nearline Storage

Pros: - Low cost
- SAS / SATA II Compatibility
- Compatible with LSI SAS HBA card (no Raid)
- Metal casing seems well put together
- Easy setup with approved controller.

Cons: Like another poster, I found there were minor issues if you are a hardware guy:
- We found the drive activity lights were mis-matched and easily corrected by adjusting the cables to the correct connectors
- Plastic Drive Caddies
- Description at new Egg didn't say it included a rail kit nor clarified the dual SAS connection was for a second system to use the storage at the same time
- a few of the drive locations show differently in the controller than in the local system (e.g. drive #7 shows as Drive ID 3 in my controller)
- Windows Storage Server doesn't detect the slots (may be HBA card issue)
- Throughput seems to go down to 24-35mb/s after initial burst using SATA II drives (may be normal need to test SAS 15K drives).

Other Thoughts: We were building a Windows Storage Server and wanted an initial device for testing and "playing around". Found this was suitable in our environment for both basic production and backup storage. Seems to allow system to work properly and have not had any issues yet. Using two arrays setup in Windows Storage Server for both shares and backup storage targets.

5 out of 5 eggs1 year Follow up

Pros: This Case has had no real issues in the one year I owned it. Tech support which postured more towards the big business still took the time to help out the consumer.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: When I need more storage space I will be buying another one.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Results for Price

Pros: Overall I am very happy with these enclosures.
Pros:
-Very low price for a SAS connected drive array.
-Quite fast with a good RAID controller.
-Very expandable by chaining units.
-Support for 2 RAID cards in host.
-Stable (We have been using them in a production environment for about 3 months now and have had no issues).
-Standard ATX power supplies are easily obtainable in the event of a failure.
-Solid construction with thick steel panels.
-Decent airflow (could be better, but does keep drives decently cool).
-Support for SSDs or other 2.5 inch drives
-Supports both SATA and SAS drives

Cons: We have purchased 3 of them so far and have encountered various small issues with them as reported by other users. For example:

In one unit the drive activity LEDs did not work with the corresponding drives. Further inspection showed that the cables were connected with the wrong headers inside the case. This took about 5 minutes to fix by ensuring that the SAS cables and port numbers corresponded to the LED cables and port numbers.

In another box, I had one of the phantom port issues with a specific port not responding. I opened the enclosure to find that the SAS cable in question was not plugged in all the way. Tightening the connection made the port respond just like all of the others.

I didn't remove any eggs as the issues I had were trivial and easily fixed.

Other Thoughts: Many people have reported having issues with this enclosure, and I have to say that this is the first time I have ever left a review. I found that this product is getting a bad wrap. It really is a good unit if you know what you are doing and can open it up and diagnose things a bit.

1 out of 5 eggsJUNK

Pros: Piece of Junk. Bought two, both failed... Backplane just drops drives randomly. Absolutely no kind of stability in a production environment.

Cons: Everything.

Other Thoughts: These two suck boxes really caused me a lot of headache. I called Habey, they said I could send them to them for repair. I threw them away!

3 out of 5 eggsHit and Miss

Pros: Good Price, Lots of Storage, Easy Setup.... LSIMEGARaid detected it right off. I own two of these and they are both connected to the LSI raid controller in a SERVER 2008 box

Cons: The first one I ordered is great. All 15 slots work fine. The second one doesn't see slot 5. I like to set them up with 14 RAID drives and a hot spare, but I couldn't do that on the second enclosure

Other Thoughts: Would definitely get 5 eggs if all 30 slots I have worked.

2 out of 5 eggsDot completely working....

Pros: Great price point and worked better when only a few drives installed. tried to put 15 new sata III drives today and found that slot 12 won't respond and 5 and 6 come and go.... Hopefully the replacement will work well.
LSI MegaRaid 9285-8e saw it rightaway! no poblems

Cons: Doesn't complelty work.... Slot 12 is dead and 5 &6 have intermitent problems.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case

Pros: The case is very well constructed. Works flawlessly with the LSI 9280-8e Raid controller. As soon as I can muster up the cash I will be buying another.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I am using this case and the LSI 9280-8e for WHS 2011. 23Tb of storage so I decided to up grade to a real raid solution, and currently running a raid 6.

Call up tech support to verify everything would work and they helped :)
