The HP Smart SAS Expander Card enhances the Smart Array controller family by allowing support for more then 8 internal hard disk drives on select ProLiant servers when connected to a Smart Array P410 Controller (SA-P410) or Smart Array P410i Controller (SAP410i). The full height, Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) expander card supports up to 24 internal drive bays plus an external connection for tape. The HP SAS Expander Card is ideal for ProLiant server customers that want to RAID more than 8 internal hard disk drives or for ProLiant server customers who purchase an additional internal drive cage and want to be able to RAID across all internal drives.
Shopping for this card
Pros: I've been shopping for this for about 1 week. I went to many sites.
Cons: NewEgg labels this as a RAID Controller. It is NOT. This is an expander for SAS controllers. You can take one connection and turn it into three of four connectors each (twelve total) Two connections will turn it into 24 total connections. (Still researching if you can turn it into 1->24)
Other Thoughts: NewEgg, please bring the price of this under control. I'd like to see it more in line and I'd like to be able to buy it from you! (Like almost everything else :-) )

SAS Expander not RAID Controller
Pros: This is a rock solid SAS EXPANDER, but it is in no way a RAID controller. I added this in with a 3ware 9690SA RAID card to go from a SFF-8087 port with 4 SATA to 24 SATA possible. In the Norco RPC-4220 case, I have all 40 hot swap bays filled with 2 tb drives for a sweet Openfiler iSCSI target.
Cons: This is in no way a RAID Controller.
Other Thoughts: If you want to to turn a single SFF-8087 on your RAID controller in to 24 ports, this is the device. **IF** your RAID controller can handle that many.
