1 out of 5 eggsNot even assembled. Terrible

Pros: None. Waste of money.

Cons: I bought a Rosewill R2-JBOD a few months prior to buying this and they are both basically the same hardware with one key exception, the Cavalry isn't even assembled. The front face place and internals literally FELL OUT as I took the enclosure out of the box.

To make matters worse, there's no obvious way to reassemble this thing since both plastic ends need to be attached into the drive housing internals from the INSIDE. There's no way to do this and there are no instructions included in case I'm missing something.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this, it's a waste of money.

3 out of 5 eggsOk but could be better

Pros: Once it's all together it seems to work. Good deal.

Cons: As others have said, taking it apart and putting it back together is pretty annoying. The pcb on the back panel is directly in front of the fan obstructing much of the airflow. Pressure on the pcb causes The power switch to pop out when the back panel is screw on.
Plugging the unit into my pc caused it to black screen and had to restart. The unit wasn't even on so Im not sure if this was my pc or the unit itself that caused this, it didn't cause any problems on my laptop though.

Other Thoughts: In order to put this thing together:
1. Insert hds into the chassis and screw the front panel on. Make sure the jumper is set correctly.
2. Slide the chassis into the housing. I didn't want to disconnect the back panel since it's difficult to get it back on once it's in the housing. Just position the back panel in such a way that it slides through the housing still attached to the chassis.
3. Screw the back panel onto the unit but not to hard as it seems like it creates some pressure on the pcb.
4. Plug everything in!

1 out of 5 eggsPoorly made piece of junk

Pros: None other than I did not loose too much money buying this trash can fodder.

Cons: Everything! The circuit board has a large capacitor on the hard drive attachment side of the PCB. Coupled with the poorly fitting case components that my unit had caused the back cover to push against and bend the PCB when installed bending the edges of the PCB in towards the hard drives and the center out away from the drives around the capacitor that was being crushed in between the PCB and the top hard drive. My unit worked fine when the back was off but with the case put together it doesn't work at all. It all boils down to poor craftsmanship, flawed design, and poor quality control honestly.

Other Thoughts: Normally I would send something like this back and get a replacement. But once you figure in lost time, shipping costs, and the high chance that a replacement is going to be just as bad I just threw it in the trash. Its not worth my time to try and get back a few measly dollars by the end of it all.

3 out of 5 eggsPain in the rear installing hard drives

Pros: Cheap and well built

Cons: Who ever designed the installation of drives into this external enclosures must have wanted to drive customers batty. To get the hard drives in is comparable to finishing a rubix cube. Twists, turns and a bunch of cursing is involved. Once you get the drives in you are never going to want to take them out, if you do you will think twice about ever putting them in again.

Other Thoughts: I'd give it 2 1/2 stars. Even at $20 I would never buy one again because it not user friendly

2 out of 5 eggsWaste of money

Pros: Good transfer speed. Cheap price, even though it dropped 20 more dollars after I purchased it.

Cons: Extremely difficult to install the drives. No instructions included. JBOD was suppose to be the default setting, but it wasnt. Had to disassemble and reset jumper after it was put together.

Other Thoughts: Going to see if Newegg is going to credit me the 20 dollars since price dropped the day after I ordered it.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Deal

Pros: Great Price.
Decent Speed (USB 2.0 is the limiting factor, ~30MB/s).
Works very well as a backup system.

Cons: Installing drives is a big pain. Almost every part of the box has to be taken apart.
Build quality isn't superb, but what can you really expect for the price.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Price

Pros: Sturdy construction, durable unit. Aluminum housing. Great price for the money (thirty bucks).

Cons: Getting the drives in. I know this has already been beat into the ground, but I did want to mention it here. Apparently these were originally designed to be sold with the drives pre-installed.

Not a huge deal, just a one-time pain to get the thing setup and running.

Additionally, the lack of documentation / support is a bit frustrating, but I did find a pdf that works for this unit (see 'other thoughts').

Other Thoughts: As previously mentioned by others, there is a 3-pin jumper-block inside, "J" & "B". "J" will let you see the 2 drives individually, and "B" will let you set them up as a stripe (one big volume). Here is a link to a PDF that works for this unit:
The documentation for model# CADB-U32 will work for this enclosure from the cavalrystorage website.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad for the money!

Pros: Great buy for the money. I have had this enclosure for a week now and it has worked as advertised. It came with factory default setting in BIG. I moved the jumper over to JBOD and both 1 TB drives were recognized. I would have stayed with BIG to get one large drive, but I did not want to format the drives because of losing data. Once the enclosure is put together its pretty solid overall and the fan is quiet. If you want a good/cheap media enclosure for music, movies and backup data this is it.

Cons: I had to take the enclosure completely apart to get the drives in. The instructions are not very informative. Cavalry wants you to contact them just to change the jumper settings from BIG to JBOD. If you want high speed this is not it, but you will pay much more.

Other Thoughts: I think one of the reviews mentioned RAID. Not sure if it will work that way. I would be interested in how to configure for that.
