2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable unit

Pros: Easily configured, gives drive status in software and on the unit. Extended warranty.

Cons: Controller failed me several months after purchase. One of the bays kept damaging hard drives that i had to stop using the bay. Eventually after a year the entire unit failed me. Tried to contact the CineRaid company and have yet to reach anyone or hear from them.

2 out of 5 eggsBe Careful!!!

Pros: It did work great for almost 3 years before 1st drive failure.4x 3TB drives Seagate Barracuda Drives ST3000DM001-9YN166. eSATA connection to Windows 2008 server.

Cons: RAID 5 auto-rebuild not working with like model (ST3000DM001-1CH166). Not usable once disk failed in RAID 5 (whole purpose of RAID 5). May display logical drive shortly but will either disconnect or reboot server when accessed. Connected to another Win7 computer; it simply disassociates from the PC and has to be rebooted/rescanned in devmgmt.

No documentation on rebuild process, including diagnostic lights explanation, drive replacement requirements, or recovering data by other means.

The drive that it "degraded" has no faults as scanned through multiple utilities in multiple OS (Linux & Windows).

Support number does not exist for CineRAID as of 6/7/15. Number on website forwards to another number which seems to link directly to a cell/home phone and not a business (no formal greeting).

Other Thoughts: I did send an email out to but too many other red flags has me writing this review earlier than expected.

I will update post if I get a positive reply. I don't know that it should change the rating as the device did not perform sufficiently when called upon for its primary functions (RAID recovery and usability in a semi-degraded state).

It is reasonable to assume that the CineRAID device could go bad. It has been 3 years of (almost) nonstop use. In that case, why doesn't the support documentation guide users through options for manual recovery of data from disks? .

The GUI is very basic and useless when it comes down to utility. They pride themselves on the look of the GUI rather than the action-ability. Use for informative purposes only.

If you want an external RAID device, option 1 is to upgrade to a NAS, Better hardware (internal processor, memory, connection options), software, support, and cross-platform sustainability of data. Option 2 is to build/buy a tower with enough drive bays and SATA connections. Add on a dedicated hardware controller if required and use directly on the OS instance instead of attached storage. You will be happier when you need to rely on recovery and swap-ability of drives.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible.

Pros: Solid construction. Very good looking. Great hot swap bays.

Cons: Where to start. Well I have Windows 8.1....if you are running that don't bother getting this. The drivers for this product don't work for it and the website is all but useless in terms of support. Also I seem to have gotten the last one is stock and I can see why. It was shipped in the manufacture box without and additional shipping box to protect it and to hide what it is. When I got it the box top was partially open with not type of shrink wrap or manufacture seal (neweggs fault) Also the power brick has a huge crack that appears to have taken some serious force to create. As this was open and knowing it had to be hit hard I have to assume they knew it and it was the last one they had.

Other Thoughts: Unless you are running an on older operating system and never want support then don't bother. Also I would not order this from newegg since I got the last one and am returning it you may get stuck with the same one.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Relatively inexpensive array, so far works good enough under moderate load, configured as RAID 10 equipped with 4x WD NAS Red 3Tb drives.

Cons: 1. I have only USB3 (no eSATA) port on my Foxconn D180S motherboard, so obviously initially I tried to connect it via CR-H458 USB3 connection. It works, but under Ubuntu 14.04 Server it crashes almost immediately (in 2-5 minuts to be precise when I was trying to copy a big enough amount of data via rsync - like 10-15Gb). Ubuntu just randomly loses/reconnects USB - I see it from the system log, You can be sure the filesystem won't like such a treatment. I was completely disappointed and ended up buying USB3-to-eSATA convertor and it works fine that way so far. Since it works ok this way, I think the issue is in CR-H458 firmware driver that works with USB3, but can't say it for sure since I didn't test it with other motherboard or OS.

2. The fan is pretty loud and doesn't have any speed adjustment, I had to buy 12" Noctua fan with 3 to 2 wires adaptor.

1 out of 5 eggsPretty Package

Pros: Solid construction, tool free setup, individual hard drive tray/caddies and very quiet. Great design and wonderful idea...

Cons: Hard drive recognition is random. I started with two 4TB hdd's with room to add two more later. Only recognized 1, swapped 1 and 2, recognized original 1 in 2 (4 spaces from top to bottom, top tray = 1 etc). Placed 2 in 1 and it was recognized! Replaced 1 in 1 and 2 in 2, only 1 was recognized! Dip switches were appropriately positioned, again and again. I'll have to dream up something to do with this backup device as my wife threw the box away. I'll try different size and brand hdd's. I installed and experimented with two 4TB Toshiba hdd's.

Other Thoughts: Boat anchor? I ain't got a boat. Paperweight? I've gone paperless, that's the reason for the backup drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product!

Pros: Affordable (low price)
Hardware RAID, not software RAID!
eSATA or USB 3.0
Supports SATA III (6Gbps)
Supports 3TB and some 4TB drives
Easy setup
Good tech support

Cons: Power cable can be shoddy

Honestly can't think of anything more that I would consider negative about this unit. Previous reviewers have talked about problems setting up the unit, and my response to them is that they probably just happened to get a lemon. It happens. RMA it and get another, because this unit is fantastic at its pricepoint.

Other Thoughts: I would like to see more options from this company. They're making quality hardware at a very affordable price. For example, I'd love to see a 5-bay unit that can be set up with RAID 5 for all drives, RAID 5 with a hot spare, or RAID 6 as some setup options. A unit that supports newer, higher capacity drives (>4TB for example), and a large (say 16TB) maximum volume size would also be fantastic.

The unit I ordered worked fantastic out of the box. I did need to order a PCIe USB 3.0 card, as my older server didn't have USB 3.0 or eSATA, and it was not a problem at all. After less than 3 months of operation, the power cord crapped out, but a call to the CineRAID tech support (a human answered!) and a very quick RMA process had a new power cord on the way and to me within a couple days.

This unit is up 24/7 with 4 WD Red 3TB drives, and other than the power cord, I've had no problems. It just works. I have a huge media collection there (pics, music, movies) as well as all my installer files, computer backups, etc. and still have room to spare.

I highly recommend this product, and more than likely will buy a second one at some point, unless CineRAID introduces a new product such as I mentioned.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor support

Pros: Good product. Have had for a couple of years and running well.

Cons: Lost the CD and cannot find the RAID
Manager software anywhere including in CineRAID website. The download stating software is a PDF.

1 out of 5 eggsThe Most Unreliable Peripheral I Have Ever Purchased

Pros: Solid Construction

Cons: I purchased this to reliable store data. I have battled with it for over two weeks now with what I can only term misery.

I added two drives, successfully mirrored them in a RAID array and formastted them. Begain copying data from a separate 3TB drive and overnight the system (Windows 7 64bit) 'lost' the drives entirely. Rebooted, drives found and the CINEraid began rebuilding the RAID 1 array using drive 1 (my source drive) and drive 4, not 3 and 4 it was originally configured with! Since then it has repeatedly lost the drives entirely and taken days to rebuild an array that was created only a short while previously. I installed a different SATA card thinking the original might be a problem. There was no change in behavior.

IT is my profession, I have successfully created software and hardware RAID arrays on a wide variety of systems and hardware and have NEVER experienced something as worthless as this.

1 out of 5 eggsOK when it works...

Pros: Cheap, easy to setup.

Cons: Constantly unmounting itself from Mac Mini server. Have tried new cables, etc. Just unmounts at random times. Have tested on known good machines. Not sure what to do next.

5 out of 5 eggsUsing for 1.5 yrs

Pros: I have been using these for more then 1.5 yrs now. Set up 2 1TB drives in RAID 1 mode. I occasionally take full backup of my machine onto CineRaid. Overall I am quite happy with the purchase as these are well built, 4 bays are more than enough, USB 3 support.

Cons: None
