5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product!

Pros: Affordable (low price)
Hardware RAID, not software RAID!
eSATA or USB 3.0
Supports SATA III (6Gbps)
Supports 3TB and some 4TB drives
Easy setup
Good tech support

Cons: Power cable can be shoddy

Honestly can't think of anything more that I would consider negative about this unit. Previous reviewers have talked about problems setting up the unit, and my response to them is that they probably just happened to get a lemon. It happens. RMA it and get another, because this unit is fantastic at its pricepoint.

Other Thoughts: I would like to see more options from this company. They're making quality hardware at a very affordable price. For example, I'd love to see a 5-bay unit that can be set up with RAID 5 for all drives, RAID 5 with a hot spare, or RAID 6 as some setup options. A unit that supports newer, higher capacity drives (>4TB for example), and a large (say 16TB) maximum volume size would also be fantastic.

The unit I ordered worked fantastic out of the box. I did need to order a PCIe USB 3.0 card, as my older server didn't have USB 3.0 or eSATA, and it was not a problem at all. After less than 3 months of operation, the power cord crapped out, but a call to the CineRAID tech support (a human answered!) and a very quick RMA process had a new power cord on the way and to me within a couple days.

This unit is up 24/7 with 4 WD Red 3TB drives, and other than the power cord, I've had no problems. It just works. I have a huge media collection there (pics, music, movies) as well as all my installer files, computer backups, etc. and still have room to spare.

I highly recommend this product, and more than likely will buy a second one at some point, unless CineRAID introduces a new product such as I mentioned.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor support

Pros: Good product. Have had for a couple of years and running well.

Cons: Lost the CD and cannot find the RAID
Manager software anywhere including in CineRAID website. The download stating software is a PDF.

1 out of 5 eggsThe Most Unreliable Peripheral I Have Ever Purchased

Pros: Solid Construction

Cons: I purchased this to reliable store data. I have battled with it for over two weeks now with what I can only term misery.

I added two drives, successfully mirrored them in a RAID array and formastted them. Begain copying data from a separate 3TB drive and overnight the system (Windows 7 64bit) 'lost' the drives entirely. Rebooted, drives found and the CINEraid began rebuilding the RAID 1 array using drive 1 (my source drive) and drive 4, not 3 and 4 it was originally configured with! Since then it has repeatedly lost the drives entirely and taken days to rebuild an array that was created only a short while previously. I installed a different SATA card thinking the original might be a problem. There was no change in behavior.

IT is my profession, I have successfully created software and hardware RAID arrays on a wide variety of systems and hardware and have NEVER experienced something as worthless as this.

1 out of 5 eggsOK when it works...

Pros: Cheap, easy to setup.

Cons: Constantly unmounting itself from Mac Mini server. Have tried new cables, etc. Just unmounts at random times. Have tested on known good machines. Not sure what to do next.

5 out of 5 eggsUsing for 1.5 yrs

Pros: I have been using these for more then 1.5 yrs now. Set up 2 1TB drives in RAID 1 mode. I occasionally take full backup of my machine onto CineRaid. Overall I am quite happy with the purchase as these are well built, 4 bays are more than enough, USB 3 support.

Cons: None

3 out of 5 eggsJBOD no Sleep

Pros: Good Construction. Cheapest of the bunch.

Cons: Barebone for JBOD use. External PSU. LED somewhat confusing.

Other Thoughts: (Nothing here about RAID)

Really wanted my drives to spin down, but no sleep in JBOD mode. USB connection works fine, eSata connection requires Port Multiplier support (JBOD) so most likely a PCIe eSata controller required.

LOOKS and FEEL: Heavy duty metal casing one don't see anymore. The trays are not backlit as they seem from pictures, they just have this iridescent blue paint on them. I was afraid the plastic front would look sheesy but no, it's fine. There are no locking knobs or keys for the trays so place it beyond the reach of your toddlers. Software is pretty basic, manual mentions Windows ME (what?)

Took a chance with the open box, got everything. Came with a 5 amp PSU. With 2 drives (Seagate M0001 2TB) I measured spin up takes 4 amp(!) So if you have all 4 bays occupied, a spiffier PSU maybe in order. Idle power with 2 drives measured at 14 watts. Fan is somewhat noisier than I like. with ambient at 40 db, fans up that to 48 db at 1 meter. The fan sucks front and exhaust back, otherwise there are no other air vents. Comes with 4 nice brushed chrome feet, but u may not see them if mounted low.

1 out of 5 eggsAVOID

Pros: Construction, promise to work well.

Cons: Missing accessory pack, took manufacturer 2 weeks to get one to me.

Used 4x 1TB WD Black drives in RAID 5. These drives are NOT on the approved vendor list, however worked perfectly. Got 100mb/s R/W and was happy.

Upgraded with 4x 3TB Seagate Enterprise Drives in RAID 5, these drives ARE ON the approved vendor list and were previously on a Adaptec 6405 RAID setup and got 300/300mb/s R/W. In the CineRAID box these Seagate drives were stuck in 7mb/s write for some reason, REGARDLESS of mode (single, JBOD, RAID, etc). After 2 weeks of e-mails with the manufacturer they couldn't help me. How can this product work fine with drives NOT on the approved list but not work with drives that are guaranteed to work? There is a serious hardware/firmware compatibility issue with this product.

After a month NewEgg was willing to return the item, thankfully.

5 out of 5 eggs2 Year Review

Pros: It has been 2 years now since I bought this device. I have not had one problem with it at all; NONE! Still very quiet, with no failures. I have since added 2 more drives for a total of four 1 TB drives in a RAID 5 setup. It continues to perform flawlessly. I'm still using the same Seagate Constellation TB drives as well. See My other review from 5/3/2012.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This unit has only a SATA internal drive interface. Maybe a newer version of this model would support SATA II or III, or even SSD's. I haven't been to manufacturer's web site since I bought this one.

2 out of 5 eggsNon Existent Customer Support

Pros: -H/W Raid does not require external eSata port multiplier
-Tool less HDD bays

Cons: I had one HDD fail in RAID 5 setup using 4 x 2TB HDD.
The rebuild did not restore the data correctly os I reformatted all the drives and reset RAID on enclosure as per documentation. Now Drives are not recognized either on Windows 7 PC or Synology NAS.
I send several emails to Customer support but no response.

Other Thoughts: I won't risk my data with this piece of junk. Its way overpriced and customer service is non existent. I would go for reputable brands like Rosewill, Sans Digital etc. I would staying away from CineRaid brand.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking Great after 18 Months

Pros: I own two of these units. The first one purchased 18 months ago and the second unit purchased 12 months ago. The first unit is configured in RAID 5 with four 3TB drives (Seagate ST3000DM001) and has 6TB of data. The second unit is configured in JBOD with two 4TB drives (Seagate ST4000DM000) and one 1TB drive (Samsung HD103S) and has about the same amount of data stored on it. Both units have been up 24/7 since shortly after purchase. Both units are connected via USB3 with read speeds at about 140MB/s on Windows 8.1. Originally deployed on Windows 7 performance has improved after the upgrade to Windows 8. Under windows 7 could never get the USB3 interface to work properly. I experienced dropouts and slow read speeds on Windows 7 when using USB3 and I eventually gave up and fell back to eSATA. To be fair USB3 support in Windows 7 is not very good and was probably most of the problem. I have had no problems setting up the email notification using stunnel and my Gmail account.

The RAID software manager that comes with the unit is functional but very Chinese/Taiwanese in design/workflow and could be laid out better with a modern windows interface. One of the things you should set is the RAID standby timer to its max of 10922 minutes. Also in windows disable any power savings for the USB controllers.

Cons: The RAID software manager is not very intuitive. The RAID stand By timer will kick in so make sure you set it or you will have lag as it comes back up or you may loose it from your system altogether. Vendor should give this unit a little TLC and fix-up the software and firmware.

Other Thoughts: Its a good unit and has been reliable for me.
