1 out of 5 eggsA bunch of Bull

Pros: None, sent a previously owned item.

Cons: Sent a previously owned item and customer service by both newegg and 123 stores has been non existent. One blames the other and it is total Bull

Other Thoughts: I rated this one star only because I had to rate it to get it posted. Both of these vendors get a big fat zero.

1 out of 5 eggsunreliable

Pros: Physical construction and design are nice.
Trays are tool-less and screw-less.

Cons: Using the CR-H252 in JBOD mode with a Supermicro X9-SAE USB3 port and Windows 7 SP1, the product is unstable. After about 10 minutes of a large file transfer, the entire unit goes offline.

The drive trays are almost impossible to remove once you slide them in.

1 out of 5 eggsCheap enclosure not fit for Raid 1

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Enclosure suffers from frequent disconnects from host machine. Power cycling does not always fix this, requiring the enclosure be fully disconnected, power cycled, and then reconnected. Enclosure has poor raid support, and recently my Raid 1 array was wiped for unknown reasons. Both drives now come up as uninitialized. For this to happen to both drives in the array is very suspect in this enclosure which has demonstrated inconsistency.

1 out of 5 eggsFans Fail

Pros: USB 3. Simple to setup.

Cons: The fan failed after a year. I might take a look to see if its replaceable.

Other Thoughts: Worked flawlessly for a year. Then fans failed. Unfourtunatly its out of warranty.

1 out of 5 eggsCheap, fans fail

Pros: Low cost. Metal housing.

Cons: Fans fail within a few months. Had several of these, all fans failed across the board. The actual drive sleds are cheap too. Thin plastic parts tend to break down after a few insertion/removals.

Other Thoughts: A cheap commodity unit. Plan on upgrading/replacing the 70mm fan.

2 out of 5 eggsRuns Loud

Pros: Has USB 3.0 connection.

Cons: It's loud and doesn't do hot swap well. Had to RMA the first unit because it has a ticking sound. The replacement was better but still loud for an enclosure.

Other Thoughts: With a half off rebate make it more worth while.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to use

Pros: cost efficiency and easy to use.
I have a Dell note book ( refurbished Dell Inspiron N5110, also from Newegg) and use CR-252 as an external storage to back up my data, it runs flawless and super fast.
But my old desk top system has a third party USB 3.0 card and USB 3.0 hub, do have the "Blue Screen" issue once,
After check with Cineraid support and they guide me to get a firmware update from my USB 3.0 hub manufacture, the problem solved.

Cons: Thunderbolt 2.0 is coming, hope to try one to see the speed.

2 out of 5 eggsBasic no-frills RAID unit

Pros: The unit is a very low cost RAID enclosure. I found the speed with USB 3.0 to be excellent considering the price. Initial setup was easy.

Cons: After initial setup and use in RAID 1 configuration with two identical Seagate 2TB drives, I attempted to test the unit by pulling one of the drives. I confirmed that the same data was on both individual drives. However, there seems to be no way to add the drive back to the enclosure and allow the RAID 1 set to rebuilb without completely wiping both drives. All you get is the incessant blue flashing lights indicating "Cannot re-build RAID set". This was the case even though no additional data was written to either drive during the test. As others have pointed out, documentation is very poor and provides no procedure for rebuilding the RAID set while preserving data on one of the drives like you would expect with any leading smart-RAID controller/enclosure. Multiple attempts to get a response from the companies e-mail support were completely ignored.

Other Thoughts: Considering the money that I paid for the unit ~$50, it may prove to be effective to guard against a single drive failure. However, once a failure occurs you will need to have another drive available copy all of your data or use some other backup option to preserve the data as you will be forced to wipe the drives to re-establish a RAID 1 set.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy it

Pros: None

Cons: You get what you pay for. I've had nothing but problems with this enclosure. First problem I had what that it caused one of my computers to constantly blue screen. I then decided plugged it into my router and used it as a shared drive. That worked great for a couple months. I checked my files one day and everything was gone. I'm assuming it went into raid mode like someone else mentioned. I'm not exactly sure what it did but I just lost close to 1TB worth of pictures, music, archived emails and so much more. I tried to contact their support (not really sure why, they can't recover my lost data) and no replay.

Other Thoughts: If you want your data to be safe, spend a little extra money and get something reliable.

1 out of 5 eggsRe: Manual is terrible, works out after a little experimentation

Pros: It was cheap ($30 ish after rebate/code).

Cons: Very flaky RAID rebuild. Controller randomly disconnects.

Other Thoughts: Update to my previous review: (from N/A at 2/14/2013 10:20:14 AM).

Well, the RAID rebuild finished (red lights stopped blinking finally), and it appeared to be working. I yanked the *other* drive to simulate *other* drive failure, however, RAID didn't automatically start to rebuild... only after I "rebooted" the enclosure did is start to rebuild (note: this could be due to the OS not letting the drive idle I suppose).

DO NOT consider your RAID rebuilt until the red lights blink in unison for a period of time, without OS access (for me, 80GB partition took about half an hour). Reboot the enclosure if necessary (unplugged from puter removes possibility of OS access "interruptions").

In any event, I bumped my rating down to a single egg because, regardless of how flaky it is with RAID rebuilds, the controller disconnects randomly, like so random that if I touch it the wrong way, it disconnects :/ To the point I thought it was the cable or something "pyhsical". I used a different USB cable, port on my puter, even power outlet, and it still seems to disconnect randomly. Fortunately, since I'm keeping the drive policy at "Quick Disconnect," (write cache off) these unexpected disconnects don't seem to cause data loss (though my computer does get rather angry if it's accessing the drive when it disconnects).

Bottom line: I would not trust this in a production environment.
