3 out of 5 eggsBeware of the Specs

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Limited Protection

Other Thoughts: Evidently APC is playing fast & loose with the PRO/Professional Terminology and Joule Ratings

This unit is listed here as:
APC PRO8 1760 Joules Professional

The one I received is labeled (on the Factory APC Box) as:
APC PRO8 1120 Joules Essential Series

At the APC site they now have it listed as:
APC PRO8 1120 Joules Professional

And on the box I received the APC Lineup Selector shows:
Series * Grade * Joule Rating
Performance Series * Maximum * 3020...4720
Professional Series * Premium * 1680...2770
Essential Series * Good * 840...1120

4 out of 5 eggsPro8 Replacement

Pros: Works as it is supposed to, reliable

Cons: I had to replace all of the APC Surge Outlets I had, they were recalled.

Other Thoughts: Always register your products with APC. By doing this for a simple Surge Protector they sent and email to me telling me what models were bad and free replacement. If I hadn't registered this product I would not have know this.

5 out of 5 eggsGood stuff

Pros: It works and protects my gear

Cons: None I can think of.

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your money on other surge protectors if they don't cover the items you plug up.

1 out of 5 eggsAPC: Meaningless Warranty

Pros: Looks good on your desk or table. Several outlets.

Cons: My SurgeArrest Professional FAILED to protect my computer. And they FAILED to honor their guarantee!

On the box, they state that if anything fails while attached, they will repair or replace the failed equipment up to a value of $75,000.

I relied on APC being a reputable company. Little did I know that after a failure, one must submit to testing of the SurgeArrest which failed to protect one's equipment. If they say the SurgeArrest is within specs and did not fail, you are out of luck.

They are dishonest. I relied on their packaging being truthful. They continue to lie about their guarantee, presenting it in it's entirety only AFTER you purchase the products!

I will never purchase anything from APC again. I have good friends in the I/T industry who are responsible for datacenter and desktop hardware support, and I've contacted them with this information.

Other Thoughts: Who in the world would think that their statement that "We will repair or replace any device which fails due to power surges while connected to our Surge Protector" is anything other than what is clearly stated on the packaging?

This company should be forced to honor their warranty.

They may as well also sell a smoke and mirrors device which warrants that it will protect you from actually being hit by lightning. And when you are hit by lightning, they will say there is no indication that their device failed, so you are not entitled to a payout.

New Egg is a great company. APC, on the other hand...

5 out of 5 eggsWorked excellent

Pros: Love the 3 power block outlets with another 5 standard. The angled plug-in is nice. Really nice is the receded power button. It protects from accidentally turn the power off.

Cons: None that I have found.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed to protect my computer

Pros: The sideways oriented plug is nice, fits well if you have furniture backed up against the outlet. The price is low (perhaps you get what you pay for, though).

Cons: Last night, a lightning storm here in the DC area hit a nearby transformer, and fried my computer through my APC surge protector. The motherboard and power supply are shot, but on the upside, the hard drive is fine. None of the other devices connected to the surge protector were damaged, however.

Other Thoughts: I have nothing against APC, but I've learned a lesson...don't skimp on surge protection if you aren't confident you'll remember to unplug electronics during a bad storm.

5 out of 5 eggsIt does it's job

Comments: What can I say...It's a surge protector and from my experience it works. I just had a lightning storm (wierd because I live near Los Angeles, California) and nothing happened to my computer. But I should say that nothing happened to my house either.
