A KVM switch (Keyboard-Video-Mouse) is a major boon to anyone who has to work with more than one computer. You can change computers without having to give up the keyboard and monitor you're already using, sometimes via the keyboard itself. Imagine the space and money you'll save, only having to buy one monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

The TRENDnet TK-205K is a 2-port PS/2 KVM switch that lets you manage two PCs with just one set of keyboard, monitor and mouse. Separate sets of KVM cables are included for easy installation and providing power to the KVM switch, eliminating the need for a power adapter. With the hot-plug feature, connect or remove PCs for maintenance without powering down the KVM switch or other PCs.

1 out of 5 eggsThis TK was KO'ed -- Part 2

Pros: I may work for others and the 4/5 rating suggests.

Cons: It doesn't work for me.

Other Thoughts: In all fairness, the email address did work, I received a actual call from someone from Trendnet. unfortunately, that only resolted in a further waste of time.

Found my Voltmeter and offered to test the Laptop docking station. They said that any 3rd party device was not supported.

I tried to explain that an IBM Thinkpad docking station mated to an IBM Thinkpad laptopn was *not* 3rd party hardware.

Bottom line: Do *not* purchase this device if now or at any time in the future you plan to use it for any sort of laptop, docking station or port replicator. Officially they will tell you it isn't supported.

What burns me about this whole interaction is that they refuse to tell me why this is true. Obviously it is a bug somewhere in this device. I told them that ethically they should have it in the description of the unit "*Not recommended for laptops or other devices" but they disagreed.

Also, even with a desktop connection my mouse was iffy, sometimes behaving strangely.

1 out of 5 eggsThis TK was KO'ed

Pros: Tiny, sleek, keyboard shhortcut was responsive

Cons: Doesn't work with my laptop, or simply a bad unit. Support says it won't work with either laptops nor laptop docking station.

Other Thoughts: This may simply be a unit not up to spec. I really was hoping it would work. I've used KVMs both at home and in data centers for years, and I needed something that wouldn't "ghost" at 12x10 video. I spent 30 minutes connecting all the cables and turned it on, with great dismay my laptop didn't work. 3rd level support gave me some garbage about laptop bases not having enough voltage and I don't have a DVM to prove them wrong, but if my keyboard works, then this device should work as well. I would buy that if my laptop were on only battery power, but it is plugged in on a docking station.
And, BTW, don't bother with "sales@trendnet.com" "warmest regards" folks, that is just for show. It's a full day now and I've had 0 response from them.
Bottom line: according to support it doesn't work with laptops. So buy one that does, just in case you every need to use it in that way someday.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic for the price!!!

Pros: Excellent bang for the buck for older PS2 systems.

Cons: None. It's all good!!!

Other Thoughts: Depending on what kind on mouse you're using, you may have to adjust the mouse speed after installing. No biggie. Newer logitec mice (USB with PS2 Bullet) have no problem with it.

2 out of 5 eggsHorrible Mouse Latency

Pros: Ships with cables

Cons: The mouse latency is horrible. I have tried using it with two Windows boxes, one running XP Pro, the other one running Win 7 Ultimate. Switching between computers is fine, keyboard works fine. The mouse is simply horrible.massive mouse latency..and it lots of times, the mouse just stops responding. Have to do the SCROLL LOCK+SCROSS LOCK+END reset, every 30 seconds, to get the mouse to respond.
One the worst spent 27 bucks ever..also what has ticked me off is that newegg dropped the price to 19.99, a month after i bought his useless device.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy it.

5 out of 5 eggs6 years and running...

Pros: Plug and Play, Zero compatibility issues using Windows (2000, XP, 7) or older versions of Linux, confirmation beep at computer switch, switch by way of installed button or use of Scroll Lock.

Cons: Considering the age of this technology, none.

Other Thoughts: After a bit more than six years of solid performance, I'm almost a little sad to finally upgrade my hardware. Definitely keeping it around as a backup.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing and simple

Pros: Easy to connect, push button access to computer

Cons: Switch box tends not to lay flay, only uses PS/2 keyboard and mouse, not USB so won't allow laptop or netbook connectivity

Other Thoughts: This is well made, solid and durable. Easy to hook up two computers with only 1 monitor, keyboard, mouse. Push button switching between two computers is quick. Perfect for my needs.
