A KVM switch (Keyboard-Video-Mouse) is a major boon to anyone who has to work with more than one computer. You can change computers without having to give up the keyboard and monitor you're already using, sometimes via the keyboard itself. Imagine the space and money you'll save, only having to buy one monitor, keyboard, and mouse. The BELKIN F1DK102U is a 2-port USB KVM switch that lets you manage two PCs with just one set of keyboard, monitor and mouse. Two pieces of six-foot cables are included for easy installation.

After saying that, KVM switches quickly stop being exciting , so let's look at things to shop for. Will it switch your speakers, too? How about your microphone? Is it USB only, or can it handle older connections? Hardware button, keyboard command control, or both?

Does it draw its power from the computer, or does it need a power adapter? How many computers do you need to switch? (Most KVM switches will handle two computers; some can handle more.) Is this the switch for you? Check it out and see!

  • newegg Control Two PCs via One Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse Share one monitor, USB keyboard and mouse between two USB-compatible computers using the BELKIN F1DK102U compact KVM switch. The built-in VGA connector supports monitors with resolutions of up to 2048 x 1536.
  • newegg Easy Switch between PCs Easily switch your monitor, keyboard and mouse from one computer to the other by using keyboard hotkeys or software without frequently pushing hardware switches.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: None

Cons: Bought one over a year ago, and it flaked out completely after a couple months. They sent a replacement (without question, since they apparently have a lot of problems with this switch), and now the replacement is broken too, and randomly changing back and forth between inputs. It's hard enough to use even when it's not broken, because the switch doesn't work very well at all. When you boot a machine, it will magically switch inputs to the OTHER machine, thus you can't see any machine's boot sequence, and if you want to for example, hit the F8 key to boot in safe mode, forget it.... you have to remove the switch. Also, the switch automagically switches by itself sometimes when your screen changes resolutions (for example playing a fullscreen game).

Other Thoughts: Complete piece of junk.

2 out of 5 eggsMore problems than convenience

Pros: Easy to set up, all-in-one construction. CHEEP.

Cons: I've experienced problems similar to those of the other reviewers here. About once a week, the unit will not allow a switch to the other machine. It will click over momentarily, then return to the first PC. The only solution is to unseat/reseat all of the connections or reboot both machines. Also, the switching between machines is quite slow, requiring at least ten seconds before allowing control of the other machine after initiating a switch. We have four of these at the office and all exhibit the same problem.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks...Sometimes

Pros: All cabling included, small form factor.

Cons: Resolution goes haywire if you don't switch to the machine prior to booting it, which more often than not means rebooting the machine in order to get it working. Switching between machines is flaky at times.

2 out of 5 eggsWarning! - Not what it says!

Pros: Simple to connect and comes with all cables needed

Cons: Specifications state clearly that unit has a switch to change computers. It does not!!! Even manufacturer's website says the same. Only by reading the user manuals are the two different models accurately described.

Other Thoughts: Softswitch-only makes this unit worthless when rebuilding PC's.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks most of the time

Pros: When it works as it should, it works great. All your mice/keyboards are detected correctly (Ive seen some KVMs that make your fancy mouse detect as a generic Microsoft Mouse). Works fine on XP/Vista/Mac OS.

Cons: The button to switch between computers is not a hard switch. Meaning that it will not stay locked on to whichever computer you set it to. So if you have it set to computer #2 and it is shut down off, but you boot up computer #1, it will automatically switch to that computer. It sounds handy but its a problem when it automatically switches when you dont want it to. It will freak out sometimes and constantly switch back and forth between computers. It will sometimes do this even when both computers are off, making an annoying clicking sound every time.

Other Thoughts: Get something else. Belkins products are overpriced and made of EPIC FAIL.

1 out of 5 eggsSeems simple enough, doesn't work

Pros: Easy to hook up. Powered by USB

Cons: No hot key to switch it.
Powered by USB. (Yes, I know I put it as a Pro).
Gets stuck on one display, hit the button it'll switch, and switch back. Almost impossible to get it to stay on 2nd display.
Any time resolution changes it switches. Makes it difficult to watch a system boot up.

Other Thoughts: Had it hooked to Dell Windows Laptop + Linux System.

4 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

Pros: Works great for switching my monitor between my PC and my Mac G5.

Cons: Sometimes when you restart one of the machines it gets wacky and keeps switching back and forth. Just unplugging both of the USB connections to it will reset it and get you back on track.

Other Thoughts: If only one connection is active, the KVM will switch to that input. It is designed that way because it is designed to be a desktop switch, not a heavy duty rack mount system.

1 out of 5 eggsDONT BUY IT!

Pros: NONE

Cons: THIS IS THE WORST KVM SWITCH I HAVE EVER USED! ONE OF THE BAD ISSUES THAT IT HAS WHENEVER U RESTART ONE MACHINE IT AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHES TO ANOTHER ONE, I MEAN WHAT KIND OF SWITCH IS THAT! ALSO IT DOES NOT HAVE A HOT KEY COMBINATION FOR THE CONSOLE.

Other Thoughts: I THOUGHT BELKIN WAS A GOOD BRAND
