As users grow in knowledge and experience with their computers, they frequently wind up with more than one system on or under the desk. Space limitations, however usually restrict the number of screens you can have on your desk. A KVM (Keyboard/Video/Monitor) switch allows you to control 2 or more systems from one keyboard and screen. IOGEAR's new MiniView Extreme Multimedia KVM and Peripheral Sharing Switch brings extra value to conventional KVM switches.

It offers USB peripheral sharing capabilities, audio and microphone support, and multi-platform support for Windows, Mac and Sun systems using either USB or PS/2(additional cables needed for PS/2). It can emulate a keyboard on each PC to allow your systems to boot normally without a keyboard error, and supports hot-swapping and can even be set to auto-scan to alternate superior-quality video between computers at preset intervals.

There's no need for device drivers or software interconnects – the switch plugs right in and handles things immediately. Any USB-enabled computers, using any USB-compatible operating system, can benefit from the efficiency, expense reduction and convenience of IOGEAR's MiniView Extreme KVMP switch.

3 out of 5 eggsUpdated

Pros: Did what it should, easy to set up.

Cons: one of the buttons broke after 3 months. It's permanently stuck inside the unit. I wouldn't recommend this for a commercial application. I use this in my lab so that each staff member can access their individual computers while saving space with one monitor/kb/mouse solution. You have to press the buttons with a decent amount of pressure and hold it for it to actually switch the USB peripherals over with the kvm components. Apparently they're not supported very durably internally.

I'll be ordering another, as I'm hoping it's just a fluke. But I'm definitely getting the extended warranty on this on, just in case.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice to have mounting brackets for this to screw the unit onto a surface, or mount it to a wall. The included stand is okay, but with the amount of pressure needed for the buttons, it's kind of rendered useless as you need two hands to support it with the weight of the cables.

5 out of 5 eggsworks good

Pros: Finally found a KVM switch that works with the Logitech illuminated keyboard. Neither keyboard nor mouse were initially recognized but I switched both to the USB hub ports, booted up both computers and then moved mouse and keyboard to correct USB ports. Button on unit must be held over 2 seconds to switch USB and audio between computers. A quick tap of the button will not switch the audio.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great, Happy Camper!

Pros: Great Plug n Play features, No software required, workes perfect! Switches much faster then what I thought it would. I really like the fact that one pc can be downloading a file, doing a virus scan, etc while the other is doing something different.. Hot plugging works as advertised and so do the Hot Keys! Switches audio great as well!

Cons: It dident like the Microsoft Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo that I used at first. The Keyboard would work, but the Mouse would not. No matter what USB Port I tired. I suspect its because this combo had only one USB connection for the transmitter. Tried a wired usb mouse with the wireless mouse and the mouse would move by itself to the right of the screen. Ended up connecting a New Microsoft Wired Keyboard and Mouse, and now it works fine. Did have an issue with the printer not working on one of the pc's. Made several attemps, but gave up. Ended up just sharing the printer on the PC, and then connecting the 2nd PC via shared printer. Works great now. I do have to put some blame on the one of the PC's connected. Its a very old Windows 2000 Machine with a very old Nvidia Motherboard (One of thier first I believe) The other was a brand new custom built PC just bough from NewEgg!

Other Thoughts: Overall, very pleased with this KVM. I think I could have got the printer issue fixed if I would have messed with it long enough, but no need to. As far as the Wireless Keyboard and Mouse not working, its ok. I purchased this Microsoft Combo from Newegg about 5 years ago, so its pretty old and dont expect the greatest compatabilty with such old hardware. This product impressed me so much, Im going to order another one today for another set of PC's! NewEgg got me my order super fast and without issue as always! NewEgg, you guys are the very best at what you do, Please keep up the great work!!

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 INCOMPATIBILTY

Pros: I have a windows XP machine where this particular switch works great on. Plug it in and it does what it should

Cons: I also have a Windows 7 64bit that I wanted to have on the other side. Unfortunately, and even after calling IOGEAR Support, this KVM switch does not work as I was expecting it too. I asked specifically for a switch that was cross compatible between the two operating systems. THIS ONE is what they recommended. So I bought it. Needless to say the machine I was building at the time fell in the INTEL/SATA3/P67 motherboard issue and I had to send back the motherboard. Over a month later I've been all day trying to sort the connection issues while getting the two rigs connected. Windows 7/64bit just won't fly. I can switch from machine to machine monitor wise, and the mouse and KB work fine on the XP rig. But as soon as I change over to the 7/64bit machine, there are no keyboard and mouse. Yes, the KB and mouse are wired connections. If you're going to be running Vista or Windows 7 64bit, DON'T BUY THIS SWITCH

Other Thoughts: I gave one egg due to the lack of much needed info listed here in the product description. Don't get me wrong here. I've been a customer of Newegg since 2002. But if they are going to sell products like this without any warnings, that's what they get. Needless to say, I can't even return this for a refund so I am stuck with it.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. Windows 7 new feature is that it requires the EDID information more frequently where as previous Windows OS's only requested it during boot up. This has created issues of resolution resets and blank screens amongst any KVM that does not contain any video emulation; which is almost all KVM's except for IOGEAR's KVM's with DynaSync. Please contact us directly at suupport@iogear.com so we can better assist you. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we hope to provide you with the proper quality service.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but not USB 2.0

Pros: Small, easy setup, works out of the box, cables included.

Cons: Not USB 2.0, sometimes changes monitor resolution when switching. Front keyboard and mouse ports are too deep for my wireless USB adapter

Other Thoughts: I was happy to see this work right out of the box. I have two laptops that I wanted to connect to my 22" monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse, Razer Naga gaming mouse, and Logitech G13 gamepad.

Neither the G13 nor the Naga mouse worked when plugged into the keyboard or mouse ports, which didn't suprise me. They work fine on the rear USB ports.

I was disappointed that my USB adapter for the wireless keyboard and mouse (Microsoft 6000 series) could not be attached to the keyboard or mouse ports. The ports are set too deep within the housing and there isn't enough clearance for the adapter to connect. I had to connect a USB hub to one of the back ports in order to get all 3 devices working.

This device isn't USB 2.0, and I get a taskbar message each time I switch between laptops. I wouldn't recommend connecting external HDs here. Also, I've had a few occasions where my screen resolution is changed from my last settings when I switch between laptops.

3 out of 5 eggsButton #2 Failing

Pros: Overall not a bad unit. Installation is easy. I only use the two buttons in the front and not any of the soft keys. I have it working with my laptop running XP and with my desktop running Fedora 12.

Cons: Button #2 works but is compressed. I have to press hard to make it work.

I never could get sound to work between two XP systems nor between my XP and Fedora systems.

Other Thoughts: I'd like to get the button fixed but dread having to send it back for repair and be without it....ugh!

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and sorry about your experience. From your description above, it sounds like your Port 2 Pushbutton is bad. Since this unit is backed by IOGEAR’s 3 year warranty, we would suggest you to give our tech support a call at 1(866)946-47327 to process an RMA. Although we understand that you will have a down time of your KVM setup, but since button plays a really important role in your setup, you should process the RMA as soon as possible. The reason being is, the push button can switch KVM focus or all KVM, audio and USB focus depending on how long you press the button. So we think that it might be the cause of the sound not working in your setup. If you have any further question, please feel free to give us a call and we would be glad to assist you. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

5 out of 5 eggsIOGEAR GCS1732

Pros: Worked perfectly! I have a client with a dual PC setup with PS2 ports on one of them and USB on the other. Also, his requirement was for no lag when switching between computers. I couldnt put a usb keyboard on the PS2 machine due to other technological reasons so I needed a switch that would support both. I did have to buy an additional cable to support this function. It worked perfectly out of the box and since it's an Active switch-self powered-it maintains KVM connectivity with PC even when not on that port.

Cons: many soft key options for the KVM switch that include switching KVM but not the Audio, or switching KM and not Video, etc.. but I found it a little annoying you could disable soft keys by hitting ctrl ctrl then scrl lck scrl lck. To undo the soft key disable mode I had to manually hit the switch ports manually then soft keys start working fine again. The other goofy thing is, it uses the same firmware as their 4 or more port systems so it offers features to switch by picking port and, on a 2 port. Although these are nit picky items they required me to train client a little bit more then normal and will likely result in an extra support call once in a blue moon.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome KVM

Pros: No issues with my wireless Microsoft mouse. Switches over very quickly, keyboard shortcut works everytime. Cables are detachable and has a usb hub so sharing things like flash drives etc are not a problem.

Cons: The description here says it's USB 2.0, it's in fact 1.1. That is the reason for an egg deduction. I checked their site for some kind of firmware upgrade but there isn't any. A bit expensive compared to others however it works very well

Other Thoughts: That USB issue *might* be related to where I bought it. I went to F.ry's and bought it for the same price and the packaging looks different. I'd like to know if in fact the one purchased here is USB 2.0.

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with some common Nvidia Chipsets

Pros: Small, On units it works with it works well.

Cons: Ended up replacing due to issues with Nvidia chipset motherboards (I think it was the nforce chipset not sure anymore.)

Other Thoughts: IOGear has let me down on a few KVMs now... seems there little 2 unit yellow one hooks people and then they are led astray. Right now I'm using a LINKSKEY LKV-248AUSK (actually have two of them) I've also got a JustCom unit similar to the JC-CB104 (only mine has audio as well)
