4 out of 5 eggsGenius idea... but plastic not so good

Pros: Really helpful if you need to switch out your hard drives. I currently use mine to run a WinME drive and an XP drive on the same computer. I also have used these for my data drives; I had one drive installed inside the PC, and one in these trays to backup and remove to keep it safe elsewhere. I also used it in the past to have a hard drive for my aunt vs. a hard drive for me so she didn't have access to my stuff.

Cons: The plastic on the front brakes off easily, as do the handles. Sometimes if it's not pushed in completely, it will crash the PC or just not even boot saying "operating system not found".

Other Thoughts: Just make the front and handle sturdier and it's 5 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is a IDE not SATA adapter

Pros: I ordered this product not realizing it is a tray for an IDE drive not a SATA drive. I think the "Customers Also Bought" Sata drives threw me off! Newegg was able to give me a complete refund. Thanks Newegg

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: My mistake by not paying closer attention

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: No need to open the case to replace hard drives. I run Vista, XP and Linux. Each operating system on it's own hard drive. Removable trays allow for infinte amounts of storage space. Filled your hard drive? Just pop in a new one. Removing drive also adds to longevity. Why have the drive powered up when you don't need it?

Cons: None that I can see.

Other Thoughts: Others complain about need to lock the tray. If you unscrew the locking pin from the lock you can turn the lock to the locked and on position and the tray can be removed without unlocking.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works exactly as expected. The aluminum body feels durable. The price is right and Newegg seems to have plenty in stock compared to other products.

Cons: Take a look at the interface PCB and look for solder globs and/or bridges. The parts are hand soldered and tend to be a little on the glob-ish side. Aside from that, I can't find anything wrong with this product.

Other Thoughts: If you have a DMM, perform a continuity check. If you have one available, I would also recommend first verifying operation with an old HD that you don't care about before using your good HD. I recommend these procedures for any HD interfacing device regardless of product brand. Your data is the most important part of your PC. Don't risk losing what can take years to accumulate because you couldn't spare a few extra minutes to verify its safety.

3 out of 5 eggsit's OK

Pros: easy to install, decent for the price, seems large enough that cooling is not a concern.

Cons: cheap fit and finish. The tray on mine doesn't slide out easily. The plastic on the end snags so you have to give it a good yank. In a high use environment, this could be a problem. Also, as someone else said, their is an interlock on the Key, it MUST be locked in order to function. This is a huge pain as the key won't say in the lock if you leave it in there. I guess I could splice the wire's behind the lock to circumvent it, but I don't feel I should have to. I've had plenty of racks before, and this key interlock is a big piece of garbage.

Other Thoughts: I guess if you're not a high volume user, this thing will do the trick. Otherwise you may want to look elsewhere.

I've never figured out why it seems all trays have that removeable cover over the hard drive. Just toss it. All its good for is trapping heat.

4 out of 5 eggsIts not rocket science

Pros: Good price, reasonable quality, good instructions. Built-in fan, mostly aluminum build. Worked correctly right out of the box.

Cons: Some parts of tray are plastic. Poor but acceptable fan placement.

Other Thoughts: I was pleased with the overall quality, and the set worked perfectly. Keep in mind the LOCK must be engaged for the drive to work.

5 out of 5 eggsmy favorite of the swappable IDE trays

Pros: Well made (check the pics= metal with plastic ends- typical of sub-server grade consumer gear- well made for consumer stuff). Works with all the other units and trays in this series (modular with the IDE series 21-23, etc).

Cons: There is NOT a plug for the trays that do NOT already have fans in them to ADD extra fans LATER, so plan ahead. As I recall, the black trays have NO fans in them, relying only on the fans in the rack, which has been good enough for my hot hard drives over 6-8 hour data copies.

Other Thoughts: I swap mine out all the time- one or twice a day between different machines. MY ONLY complaint about ANY of these Kingwin unit series is that I get tired of the "key" solutions- wish they would find a new technnology to lock them and unlock them- if you leave the keys in the racks they fall out onto the floor. I've had these series for my personal 12 HD's since 1/2006 and no complaints at all outside of just finally replacing the fans in the beige ones (they finally got noisy on me). The black series is my fave outside of the fanless USB, semi-permanent solutions!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: I have several of these units to swap OS's and perform backups. All have worked great.

Cons: Not alot of airflow but I run 250GB and smaller drives in these units so heat really doesnt become an issue. It can make a little rattle occasionally but nothing annoying.

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems

Pros: Seems better built than other similarly priced alternatives.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I don't move my drives around a lot - maybe a couple times a week. Hard to say how this would work in an environment where drives are switched frequently.
