Kingwin's black aluminum SATA congfigured mobile rack lets you turn a standard 5.25-inch external desktop drive bay into a removable hard drive bay. Made to take advantage of the high data-transport speeds of the Serial ATA interface, the rack's direct SATA-to-SATA bridge connection allows for the fastest performance and is compatible with both SATA I and II speeds.

Made from aluminum and ABS plastic, the removable cage features an auto push-pull handle for quick insertion and removal of the drive. A shock-absorption system makes traveling with your drive safer. When the drive's removed, an auto shutter keeps dust out. Once your drive is inserted an LED indicates the power status as well as operation of the ball-bearing cooling fan. A power keylock keeps people from removing the drive without permission.

1 out of 5 eggsHighly Unreliable

Pros: None

Cons: Highly unreliable

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your money. The SATA connectors were very unreliable and gave me problems with disk writes. I removed mine from my computer and it's going to stay out.

4 out of 5 eggsOK for the price. Pretty good with a few mods.

Pros: I have owned many of these over the course of many years. They all still work fine once you get past their little quirks and replace the useless fans.

- Pass-through bus supports all speeds that I have tried. KF-91s from 10 years ago work at modern speeds.

- Locking feature helps prevent accidental removal.

- Bay is not as long as the old KF PATA bays, so they fit in most cases without trouble.

- This latest version of the PCB supports both 4-pin and SATA power connectors.

Cons: - These are not enterprise-grade bays. You can't jam them in and out and knock them around like you can with the more expensive stuff. Get a more expensive bay if that worries you. For home server or workstation use, they are fine.

- The fans are junk. They are cheap, single ball-bearing 40mm fans that will fail within months. The first thing I do after buying these is replace the fan.

- Tray insertion needs to be done with some care. I have never broken one of these, but I always slip the trays in gently. If they don't slide in smoothly, something is wrong.

- Older models had a bit of play in the latch mechanism. A little extra shove was needed to get the SATA connectors to fully seat. Make sure that the drive is mounted as far back in the tray as possible.

- Airflow is rather suboptimal, due to the open design of the frame. Air is not force through the bay the way that it should be.

Other Thoughts: Some time ago, I bought a bunch of replacement fans for these and that is what I always use. They are thick, server-grade, dual-BB fans. They are very noisy, but move some serious air. Toasty SAS drives are kept cool. When used in a workstation, I run them on 5V instead of 12V. They run silently and still create enough of a breeze to provide some moderate cooling.

To improve cooling, wrap the top and bottom of the rack with thin plastic (I just tape part of a plastic bag to the top and bottom). This will force air through the tray.

There are probably better trays available now, but at the time these were the best bang for the buck. I keep buying them because of the compatibility. Other models and manufacturers have come and gone, but I can still buy these and they do work.

1 out of 5 eggsBad fans

Pros: They look nice and are easy to install

Cons: The fans are junk. 4 out of the 5 I have purchased had fan failures in under 5 months. They all started to get noisy and put out noise on the bus corrupting the drive and crashing the system. Tried disabling the fan and the problems went away.

1 out of 5 eggsI do not like this product

Pros: Kingwin makes good stuff, I have used many drive drawers from them for many years. This one will fit, will work, and if treated gently, will do just what you want.
Nice price too.

Cons: I bought three of these and have thrown them away. Bought other Kingwin models instead. I do not like the the seperate floor piece for drive mounting. What really bugged me is that the power connector inside was very brittle. One broke during install, one broke when the user slid the drawer into the slot kinda forcably.

Other Thoughts: The seperate floor piece is soft metal, what is that for? IF you are not gentle with it, it could be bent or mutilated on install. Uninstalling drives from it is a problem, I think it gets softer with age.

1 out of 5 eggsKingWin KF91-BK

Pros: Easy to install.

Cons: Fans fail after about 1 month and cause a lot of commotion! You could try disconnecting the fan, but then the 'fail safe' prevents it from spinning up. Not a good option for a server hot swap. The fans are too unreliable. Customer has had to have me out twice in two months to replace the cages at his expense for my time.

Other Thoughts: These will be thrown in the trash and replaced with better ones. Can't have down time due to shoddy workmanship.
p.s. If your going to fail safe the unit so it wont operate without the fan, at least put a decent fan in the unit!!!!

4 out of 5 eggsGot 2 and all is well after 1 month.

Pros: Cheap, easy to insert/remove.
Use on a daily basis.

Cons: Fan spazed out a few tomes but its ok now. Top drive enclosure cover is flimsy & rattled.
Need to insert drive before booting windows 7.

Other Thoughts: Not much of a manual but the product itself is pretty straight forward.

1 out of 5 eggsI REGRET BUYING THESE

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: The sata connected on the back of the rack itself wont stay connected. Extremely loose. Going to be pitching these things in the trash. I can't have a drive become disconnected in the middle of work. Just by bumping the pc, even lightly, the sata cable loses connection. PC locks up, blue screen of death with a physical dump of the memory.

Other Thoughts: I should of read the reviews before buying these pieces of junk.

4 out of 5 eggsNOT meant for frequent swaps

Pros: Allows for easy swapping of HD, without opening the case. Full SATA speeds. No power supply issues.

Cons: NOT hot swappable (you will need to reboot - even with Win 7). Not tool-less (requires you to screw in your HD to a tray). You need to use 4 screws, as my HD was really lose inside the tray. The removable tray needs to be locked in to enclosure using a supplied key. If you lose the key, the rack become useless.

Other Thoughts: If you need to swap HD only infrequently, this is a way to go. I have to very occasionally work with HDs other bring in. This is a perfect solution. I tried external USB cradles, but I found USB speeds to be way too slow for large data transfers. I never tried to run OS from this enclosure, I am not sure that would work.

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect for my needs

Pros: I bought this to simplify swapping drives on a test server, where each drive runs a separate operating system. It's perfect for that. Installation is easy - no different than installing an optical drive. It works exactly as advertised.

Cons: As others have pointed out, this may not be the best unit for someone who swaps drives every day - if nothing else it uses the drive's own connectors, which are not made for frequent plug/unplug cycles. I did not find the unit itself to be fragile, but I suppose it might be a little bit so if you change the drive daily.

I decided to deduct an egg for lack of documentation - other than the brief, general instructions on the back of the box, they don't provide any.

Other Thoughts: Works with a SATA power connector or molex - the ability to use SATA seems to be missing from the product info and "documentation" on the box. Locking the unit with the key lock also turns on the power, so it won't work unlocked. I think they make an otherwise identical unit that works with a turn switch instead of the key.
