3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but far from perfect.

Pros: Works. Had it in an Optiplex GX620 being used as a server, but couldn't leave it in there.

Rugged metal vs. the cheap plastic caddies I've used before.

Cons: Key lock is very tight when locking the caddy in, almost to the point that you think you'll break it trying to turn it all the way to the locked position.

Non-removable SATA cable.

Design. Might not work in cases that have a front bezel that needs to be removed to install 5.25" drives.

Other Thoughts: Got it for Christmas.

If your case has a front bezel that you need to take off to install drives, this unit is not for you. The bezel can keep the caddy from pulling out.

The Dell Optiplex GX620 I got it for is like this. You have to take the case side off, then release the bezel, then unlock and pull the drive out. As a result, it's faster to just change drives the old fashioned way.

Also, this unit uses the drive connector to make the connection when inserted. If you plan to remove the drive frequently, I wouldn't recommend this unit. On the upside, if you need to temporarily use the drive in a PC without this dock, you can hook the drive up without taking it out of the caddy.

Why does it have a Molex connector? I knew this before I got it, but it still seems a bit ridiculous since the drive is SATA.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor product

Pros: 2nd device received was functional.

Cons: 1st device received was DOA. SATA cable hard-wired into back of bay (not replaceable). No connections inside the hard-drive cartridge. There is just a hole to allow the bay connectors to slide over hard-drive connectors. No HDD led cable as shown in the photos. No vibration damping of any kind (metal against metal for every contact surface). Key must be in locked position to activate, but lock lines up poorly and is difficult to turn.

Other Thoughts: When installing the hard-drive into the cartridge, I had to unscrew and move several times to get drive connectors to line up with bay connectors. The drive had to be centered perfectly due to the gaps on either side of the drive. I've come to expect better from Vantec over the years.

4 out of 5 eggslow profile

Pros: These have been really useful since I can start the drive up while my computer is still running. Also, I like them without the fancy LED because that always got my kid's attention and he would pull on the IDE versions I had. These are also shorter than the old IDE model. That's a help for ventilation and smaller towers.

Cons: The handle worries me that it may not be rugged enough. We'll have to wait an see.

Other Thoughts: Wish there were a way to adapt these to an IDE drive.

4 out of 5 eggsHit or Miss

Pros: Sata work very well, fast, reliable, more convenient than external enclosures.

Cons: Conflicts with small portable type drives
connected via USB
Some Mobo do not see hot swaps drive at all (raid)

Other Thoughts: Only use as slave back-up application

3 out of 5 eggsHope it works without a fan

Pros: Very solid construction with lots of aluminum. I was surprised by how much the box weighed.

Cons: The fan can be heard over my other case fans during normal operation. It makes occasional loud noises like a bearing is going out. This is the second Vantec product that I've owned that has had problems within a month of use. I'm not sure how many more of their products I will buy in the future.

Other Thoughts: I'm going to unplug the fan and rely on the aluminum to keep the Seagate 750gig cool.

3 out of 5 eggsNot-so-hot from Vantec

Pros: !. SATA I/II compatibility

2. Activity LEDs

3.Long cables (some may like this, see CONS)

4. HDD cooling works well

Cons: 1. Long cables... in my case (Coolermaster 150), I have a lot of extra cable coiled, and it looks like (I can't believe Newegg has to censor the CR-word...). With non-removable cables, you don't have the option of swapping them for shorter cables. I do electronics all day at work, the LAST think I want to do when I get home is start desoldering, splicing, etc...

2. NOISY FANS FROM HELL!! On both of my units, the fans are RIDICULOUSLY loud. I ended up swapping them out for aftermarket units, with no change. The rest of the system (used as a backup server) is dead silent, so that only magnifies the sound.

3. Cheep feeling handle. Granted, I don't pull the drives everyday, but I HATE how the handles move up about half-way before the lock stops it. The handle just shouldn't move AT ALL if the drive is in the locked position.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

Pros: Easy to install. Able to use old 4 pin power supply plug instead of weak SATA plug. No cables to fiddle with inside the cartridge. Keeps drive cool. Can buy additional, reasonably priced cartrides for multiple drives.

Cons: Common to all products of this type, the small 40mm fan is prone to quick failure.

Other Thoughts: We own 3 of these. Although the fan is whining on the first one we purchased, a quick email to Vantec tech support got us a replacement and a backup spare sent out.

I would love to see Vantec make an external, eSATA drive that uses this cartridge as well.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes it's job

Pros: Allows hot swapping of hard drives.
Very solid build.

Cons: The hard drive SATA connection is reinserted into the rack's sata connection every time you reinsert the hard drive. A better design would have used a more durable intermediary to perform the connection. Pray to the Computer Gawds that you don't accidentally break your HD sata connection.

Other Thoughts: I have 4 of these, running two RAID 1 arrays and I haven't had a problem yet.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice

Pros: * Easy to install but it make take a while.
* Removable hard drive mount
* Aluminum casing both for the mount and the drive enclosure.
* Good Air flow design
* Keyed on/off switch making it a good p0*n storage room. They cant access the drive unless they have a key. HAHAHAHA! (make sure you have a locked case though)

Cons: * I have a bad feeling about it's fan. Very noisy
* Keyed on/off switch making it a hassle turning it on/off repeatedly. It should have a seperate on/off and keyed lock.

Other Thoughts: * I use this as my back up drive mount. I can turn on my hard drive when performing a backup then turn it off when its finish. My computer runs 24/7 so its cool that I can turn off the back up drive when not in used, preserving it's life span.

You can turn SATA on/off without having to restart the computer. But make sure that nothing is being written to the hard drive cause it might do some damage. To make sure, use "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the taskbar.

and,
newegg r0xurs!!

3 out of 5 eggsProbably Works For Most..Not For Me

Pros: Arrived Fast...seems like a solid product.

Cons: I have a Dell Poweredge Server and it does not fit in the 5.25" bay. The shell installs in the case fine but the darn HD rack has a plastic lip around the casing and I cant push the HD rack in all the way! I dont know whether to blame this on Dell or Vantec. BEWARE IF YOU HAVE A DELL POWEREDGE SERVER!!!
