5 out of 5 eggsGreat deal

This review is from: CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: I upgraded from a cheap PSU that came as a package deal with my case. It lasted about 18 months, so I can't complain.

This Corsair unit is significantly more sturdy and quieter. I expect this to last for a long time, and with the rebate and instant $5 off from Newegg, I ended up paying just $25 for this unit. Not sure that price can be beat for a quality PSU unit.

Cons: It was slightly larger than my previous unit, so connecting my DVD drive was a bit tricky, since there was much space between the PSU and the DVD drive connections. The PSU wires are sturdy, but the trade-off is that they are not as flexible.

4 out of 5 eggs4 molex with short cables

This review is from: CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: 500W, silent, 4 molex for "legacy" drives, SATA, price with rebate.

Cons: Short cables for molex and floppy drive connectors.

Other Thoughts: I needed a more powerful PSU to handle an additional PATA IDE HD on my beloved "legacy" system. I needed 4 molex connectors (2 HDs and 2 optical drives) and this was one of the few modern PSUs with that many.

The only problem was the length between the connectors, which made me change the optical drives to bays depending on their length so I could actually connect them in the only setup possible, with the cable going to the floppy disk tighter than I'd like it to be.

In any case, it's working flawlessly and with the $20 rebate it was a good deal.

3 out of 5 eggsOk Value Unit

This review is from: CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Also, the connectors are nice, 8-pin CPU actually a split and joined 4+4, same for the 20+4 pin MoBo.

Cons: All 4 of the Molex connectors are on a single lead, if you have an older rig (like mine) it might pose some challenge.
Also, its slightly louder than the (recently dedeased) Antec NeoPower its replacing, but its not that bad. I am the silent PC type, not a gamer.

Other Thoughts: Its pretty hard going from a modular to conventional PSU. I could not believe the price of direct replacements for my 5 or 6 yr. old Neo, and couldn't justify it for the older rig. Oh well..

This review is from: CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Very well made!

Very professional looking!

Cons: Its Corsair how could there be a con!

Other Thoughts: I have ordered a ton of these in the past 6 months and have not thought twice about it! This is a top notch power supply and I will keep ordering them as long as they keep making them!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Stable voltage, looks great, efficient.

Cons: Tight connectors.

Other Thoughts: This is a great supply, I had a bit of trouble with the size of the connectors though. They are very tight, especially the 24 pin connector. It took a fair amount of force to get it to fully seat, and the molex connections are also a bit tight. This isn't too bad, as I'd rather have a tighter connector than too loose, but its a bit annoying and can cause you to accidentally damage something by pushing too hard. The supply itself however, is very good and delivers exactly what it says, no inflated ratings here.

2 out of 5 eggsFan makes knocking noise, SATA cable poorly conceived.

This review is from: CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Works. The cables are nicely wrapped.

Cons: The fan is supposed to be quiet, and the continuous noise is indeed rather quiet, but the fan often makes a knocking noise. It's not exactly loud in an absolute sense, but it is the loudest thing in the computer and when it persists it can become very annoying, like Chinese water torture.

Also, the SATA power cable is too short to feed my bank of hard drives on the bottom of my ATX case. The problem is exacerbated by the connectors facing the wrong way to feed hard drives positioned cover-up, so the cable has to go down to feed the bottom drive first then work back up.

Other Thoughts: I see other reviews mentioning a clicking noise, so I'm thinking maybe this isn't an isolated problem of my unit.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We're sorry to hear that your power supply is making a clicking noise. If you would like a replacement, please contact us by submitting a ticket at corsair.force.com or calling us at 888-222-4346 and we'll be more than happy to help you.

4 out of 5 eggs24pin bothersome

This review is from: CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Once plugged in fully, it works without issue and is relatively quiet.

Cons: That 24pin motherboard connector didn't quite fit?!

Other Thoughts: Not sure if I got unlucky or what, but I had a hell of a hard time inserting the 24pin main connector into the motherboard. It just wouldn't go that final millimeter and snap in!! There were no obtrusions or anything in the way. I've assembled tons of PSUs and this is the one that gave me the most trouble.

Ironically, I was replacing a Corsair CX430 with this CX500. You'd think the connectors would match...

Eventually squeezed it in with some alligator pliers... I just hope this was a one time issue and not an indicator of defect within the brand.
