4 out of 5 eggsGood headphones

This review is from: CORSAIR HXi HX850i (CP-9020073) 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Power Supply

Pros: For its price these are good descent sounding head phones

Goes on sale for under $40 alot. Which at that price they are a steal.

Cons: The are not the most comfortable and the sound quality is good but not great.
But to be fair I'm comparing these to head phones that cost 2x as much. So bottom line yes these headphone are great for their price but keep in mind for 30-40 dollars more there are much better options.

Other Thoughts: These are my go to headphones I buy 3-6 a year every year for past few years.

These are the headphones I buy for family or friends if I build them a new pc or they need a replacement (people seem to run over or let thier dogs eat there mics)

For their price 30-36$ they are a steal and are great for the price.

But keep in mind if you have extra cash for 30-40 dollars more you can get much more comfortable and better sounding headsets from
Creative or other brands.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Powet Supply

This review is from: CORSAIR HXi HX850i (CP-9020073) 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Power Supply

Pros: 7 Year Warranty - this is a great warranty and just shows how committed Corsair is to this product.

Platinum Certified - The Highest level of efficiency that a power supply can have. 92%+ efficiency at 20% 50% 80% 100% loads.

Fully modular - easy cable management

Insanely quiet - most power supplies these days are quiet but this thing is in a league of its own.

Corsair Link - provides additional monitoring and testing software. Very cool.

More cables and zip ties then most will ever need.

Cons: None. Truly none. I've seen and used many different power supplies even other corsair models. This thing screams quality.
From build quality sturdiness, capacitors used, from the packaging and included items. This is a great product.

Other Thoughts: Part 1 -

Received this product for review.

Package arrived undamaged.

The packaging is great.

All the cables one could want.
2 bags come with it 1 for the power supply and 1 for the cables. Even the power cable seems to be heavier duty(thicker) then what I'm used to seeing being shipped with other PSU units.

The power supply itself is very sharp. The outside edges of the supply are beveled (contoured instead if flat square) making it stand out.

When using a flash light you can see highest quality capacitors being used through the unit.

The corsair link is a a cool feature. You use the mini USB cable provided and connect to a USB header on your motherboard. With the dashboard software it gives your monitoring options and even allows you to control some of the power supplies settings in real time (like the fan speed setting).

This unit is ultra quiet. I had to check a few times on the first build to make sure it was spinning its that quiet.

Part 2- testing

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

This review is from: CORSAIR HXi HX850i (CP-9020073) 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Power Supply

Pros: - Arrived very quickly from Newegg in well-packaged container.
- The product box is huge. Its 16x9x6. There is good reason for that though. The box is filled with extras that are not available with lower-end PSUs. Since this PSU is FULLY-MODULAR, Corsair provides a nifty Velcro bag to keep all extra cables together. There is also 77 page printed manual (11 pages in English), warranty card, zip ties, mounting screws, Corsair Case badge and power cord. To top it all off, Corsair also throws in a 9x13 black velvet bag, just in case you need to keep you PSU outside the PC.
- Speaking of cables, there are plenty of them:
• 1 - 24-pin ATX cable (610 mm in lenght)
• 2 – EPS/ATX12V 8 pin (4+4) cable (650 mm)
• 3 - PCIe 8pin (6+2) cable (600 mm and 750 mm)
• 3 – SATA cables (4 connectors each) 500mm, 600mm and 700 mm in length
• 3 - Peripheral cables (4 pin “MOLEX”) 450mm, 550mm and 650mm in length
• 2 – Floppy adapter cables (4 pin) 101mm in length
- Additionally, there is a PMBus cable (800mm) and USB diagnostic cable (800mm) which connects directly from PSU to a motherboard USB 2.0 header. Once you download Corsair Link Dashboard software from Corsair website, you will have easy access to diagnostic information for PSU, system fans RPMs, temperature of hard drives, CPU, GPU etc. Corsair Link Dashboard software will also display how much power your system draws in and how much power it puts out. Based on that it also calculates the average efficiency and displays it in a nifty graph. Bear in mind that this PSU will be least efficient when your PC idles and most efficient at about 50 percent load. For example my PC idles at about 100W. At that load I get about 82 % efficiency (at 110 Volts). At about 500W you will see about 92% efficiency.
- While this PSU has a cooling fan, the fan will not turn on until the PSU outputs sustained 350W and more of power. Even when the fan comes on, it is very quiet.
- Corsair HX850i has multiple technologies built in that will protect your PC components from damage, such as: ”Over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, and short circuit protection, over power protection, over temperature protection”.
- Its Haswell ready.

Cons: There are no deficiencies of any kind that would make this PSU a non-buy. I really like this PSU and I think it is a very good piece of hardware. It now proudly serves in my main PC. However, If I really wanted to mention something to “nit-pick” about, I would say that:
- This PSU has all pertinent information like serial number, model, loads, voltages, etc; printed on the sticker on bottom of the power supply. This information will not be visible once the PSU is installed. I much prefer the PSUs that have the informational sticker printed on its sides, where it is clearly visible when mounted into PC.

Other Thoughts: I was able to quickly install HX850i in my tower. Cables/connectors fit together well and the PSU was very easy to install. I had absolutely no problems bundling and zip-tying all my ribbon-style cabling with the included black zip-ties.
After testing HX850i for w while, I am very impressed by its quality and nearly silent operation. I highly recommend this unit. In my previous builds, I liked to have a PSU’s that provide approximately twice as much power as the PC components need. This might be an overkill and it is not entirely necessary. However, it will allow for future expansion and will keep the PSU working much, much longer. I have seen a lot of generic “beige” power supplies that have failed mainly because they constantly run close to their capacity. In the end, the PSU needs to provide stable and ample power to the whole system. Corsair HX850i is a great product that will do just that. With its max 850W power and lots of connectors, Corsair HX850i will not disappoint you.

5 out of 5 eggsSilent, but deadly

This review is from: CORSAIR HXi HX850i (CP-9020073) 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Power Supply

Pros: This Corsair unit is packaged exceptionally well in a large box. It is fully modular and it comes with an extended 7 year warranty. The black colored unit with Blue and white lettering looks good too!

I have been using Corsair PSUs for the past 7 years. I have the Corsair 1200W and 1000W units powering my bench setup for the past few years and they perform flawlessly.
I would have loved to match this PSU up with some enthusiast VGUs but currently I had none available. Therefore my setup for testing this PSU was a ASRock Z97 OC formula with a 4790K CPU with 2 SSDs in RAID 0 with 2 NVidia 8800GTS 512 VGU's in SLI.

The unit has three 6+2 modular cables to power Tri VGU systems. The cables are all black colored with a flat ribbon style allowing them to be used in tight places. I do like the fact that this unit has 2 8-pin EPS connectors that are used to power the CPU sockets on a motherboard. This allows for maximum potential CPU overclocking. Especially if you are an extreme OCer and go sub zero.

After hooking up this PSU to my system I thought I received a DOA unit since my Motherboard's red little power indicator light did not illuminate. Therefore, I checked all my connections again and again. But after double and triple checking all the connections were secure, no motherboard power indicator light lit up. So, I just pressed the power on button on the Mobo, and to my surprise the PSU and the system came to life.

To stress the unit to the maximum I could with the available hardware I had available to me I ran some 3DMark benches. The CPU was ran at 4c/8t at 4.95GHz under water. The VGU's in SLI at 800/1200. The Corsair 850 was also powering the water pump, some optical drives, 10 140mm fans at 2400 rpms.

This PSU is built for those who are looking at keeping their systems as quiet as possible. The cooling fan on this PSU is triggered when the unit gets warm when it is delivering somewhere between 300 - 350 watts. Therefore, for a majority of systems that are not being overclocked the fan will not spin and this PSU will not create any fan noise. My system exhibited no electrical buzzing sounds from coil whine.

This PSU comes with a Corsair digital link for additional monitoring and control. You connect the included link cable to a motherboard USB header and you can monitor the PSUs performance from your desktop. I compared what the software was telling me the unit was supplying to what my Killawatt device was showing. And they were very close.

Cons: I did not like that the 24 pin ATX cable can be separated into a 20 pin connection by separating off the other 4 pins. My preference would be to just have a solid, non-splitable, 24 pin cable.

Secondly, the pricing for a unit with these characteristics may be a little to rich for some to justify paying for. Though this unit is fully modular and has a 90% efficiency rating and uses all Japanese 105°C capacitors does merit a premium over other 850 Watt PSUs.

Other Thoughts: At current pricing the decision to purchase this unit isn't a No-Brainer. It will depend on what the buyer is looking for in a PSU. This Model is basically a Cadillac 850 Watt PSU with all the bells and whistles.

Also, securing the cables into their receptacles is sometimes tricky. You may need to push them in hard until you hear the clicking sound that the clip has latched.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Efficiency, Great Performance

This review is from: CORSAIR HXi HX850i (CP-9020073) 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Power Supply

Pros: Corsair was originally known for their outstanding PC memory, but about 6 years ago, they made a big splash in the PSU market. Their HX line caught the industry by storm a few years ago and they're back at it now with their improved "I" series of super efficient, high performance power supplies.

I am not going to try to give a professional review of this PSU with voltage and rail readings, because I simply do not have the requisite knowledge and equipment to provide this level of testing. But here's the improvements that really caught my attention with the new HX850i PSU.

+Small and Light. PSUs have come a long way in terms of their internals. They used to be really heavy, and large to accommodate all the capacitors, coils and heatsinks needed to keep them operational. This HX850i is much smaller than my older HX1000, which is great for smaller footprints like Steam or Lan Boxes that still house powerful components like micro ITX rigs with full-sized Graphics
cards.

+Fully Modular. I believe Corsair went this route starting with their AX series, but my older HX1000 was not fully modular, the ATX 24-pin and 8-pin, as well as a few PCIe leads were not modular and came from a central stalk. Not a huge deal, but the clean look of a fully modular PSU is nice and the distributed leads from the PSU allow for better cable management. There are tons of leads and connectors for even the most busy system with Quad-SLI/CF, 10+ drives, tons of system fans.

+Pliable sleeved cables. Not as nice as expensive braided cables, but some of the nicer rubber sleeving I have seen. Better than my HX1000 in terms of pliability.

+Quiet! Can't believe how quiet this PSU is, the fan actually doesn't spin at all most of the time and operates completely silently. You have to put a decent load on it (~200W) before it spins up and even then you can't hear it.

+Incredibly Efficient. The HX1000 I had wasn't the most efficient design, but it was ahead of its time and was still 80plus rated. This new 850i is amazing with its 80 Plus platinum rating. Using a kill-a-watt meter from the wall, this PSU was only drawing 95W on an older, power-hungry X58 platform with a GTX 670 connected to it. Using an Antec TruePower Quattro 1200W, the same system was drawing 150W. That's an amazing difference at idle/desktop usage.

+Amazing presentation. This product just exudes that premium/quality feel when you unbox it. It's laid out nicely in a velvet duster bag, like one of those crown royal bags, and there's a nice Velcro bag for all of your extra modular cables (same as HX1000). Zip ties, slick Corsair case badge, and black anodized screws are also included again.

Cons: Honestly there's not much to take off of this power supply. The only con I would give is that the Corsair Link is still very flakey in Windows 8.1. I still have problems with it with my H100i, but it doesn't impact the performance of this PSU in any way, so I didn't take off any eggs for it. I also don't mention it as a Pro for this reason.

Other Thoughts: I'm not quite sure the difference between Corsair's AX and HXi series, but I don't think you can go wrong with either. The efficiency and lightweight size and profile of this new PSU line can't be ignored however, and when paired with smaller gaming rigs, or rigs with more efficient powerful GPUs (hello GTX 970/980), then this PSU is plenty to power 2 or even 3 GPUs. If you aren't sure, you can even go up to the 1000W model if you think you need the headroom.

I think the price is fair for this range of power supply, especially given how efficient it is.

5 out of 5 eggsEggXpert Review - Corsair HX 850i

This review is from: CORSAIR HXi HX850i (CP-9020073) 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Power Supply

Pros: It's a Corsair, so it's not going to blow up your computer. ;)

Color scheme goes well with Blue/black builds (matches all my setups!)

Tons of modular cables to work with practically any build. They are all black in a ribbon-style so they're flat instead of bulky, making them squeeze into tight spaces behind the case side panel and mobo panel easier.

PCIE cables have two 6+2 pin connectors for a total of 6 possible connections. This means I actually have one less cable to route for my graphics card compared to my other PSUs. Gives you room for SLI/Crossfire setups.

Corsair Link software is very good, except for a couple of bugs. I don't know how accurate the wattage readings are but if they are even within a couple of watts, then my computer pulls way less power than I ever thought. It displays not only what your components are using from the PSU, but also what it's pulling from the wall, and calculates the efficiency. At idle it calculates about 80% efficiency, but it becomes much more efficient as more power is pulled from it and is getting 90-95% efficiency with my computer under load, however it's not using much wattage. See other thoughts for more details.

The fan is very quiet even at 100%, and cannot be heard over my other case fans. The fan test button is nice. The fanless mode at low wattages/heat is great for those looking for quiet operation. Honestly, even at load I don't think the fan has come on for my setup.

Inside, transformers indicate that it is a Channel Well Technology unit, all solder joints look superb, and there's only Nippon Chemi-Con brand Japanese capacitors. This is a very solid built PSU that will surely last a while; The warranty IS for 7 years, so it looks like Corsair is willing to back this up.

Cons: I'm not entirely sure the price is completely justified, but it has just released. I expect the price will lower and become a little more competitive after a while.

The Corsair Link software is a little bugged; When first installed it displayed temperatures and fan speeds for all hardware just fine, but after restarting the computer, everything has duplicated and it's now displaying a bunch of 0 degrees and 0 RPM icons. The "Graph" tab also does not display anything. I don't know what it's supposed to be graphing, but it isn't working. This is a software bug and I'm sure Corsair will figure it out with an update to the software.

Both of these issues will work out in the end so I'm not deducting any eggs for them.

Other Thoughts: The setup I tested this on was in a Corsair Graphite Series 600T case, with an ASRock Z97 Extreme 6, Intel i5-4670K, AMD Radeon HD7850, 3TB Seagate NAS HDD and a 128GB Samsung 830 SSD. Corsair link software reports that my computer consumes around 60W at idle, and around 200W at load. I would have never guessed it would consume so little power, making this PSU overkill in every sense of the term. I will hook it up to my AMD Bulldozer rig soon and check out what wattage it's using... I might be in for an unpleasant surprise.

Even with it's current price it's definitely not a bad deal. It's just that there's many more options for good 850W PSUs for much less, however they're not 80+ Platinum rated.

Some of the cables seemed to be harder to plug in than others. You have to keep pushing on them until you hear a slight "click" noise, then they're secure. Some went in with minimal effort, some required grabbing the back of the computer to stabilize it on the desk and worrying that I was going to break the PSU.

There are two Corsair link cables. One is a USB cable that plugs directly into a mobo header. This is nice but in my case and with my mobo, I have to disconnect half of my front USB 2.0 ports in order to use the software. The other cable is a little weird with only 4 wires and a very tiny connector on one end, with what looks like a miniature MOLEX connection on the other that plugs into the PSU. I have no idea what this is used for and the manual offers no clue either, and just calls it a "Corsair Digital Link Interface Cable". It appears some other, maybe older PSUs with Corsair Link only have this conector, so I assume this is an updated design.
