Thermaltake A2397 Aluminum 2.5" IDE USB 2.0 Silver River R2.5 Enclosure

Turn a standard 2.5-inch Parallel ATA hard drive into a portable USB 2.0 storage device with the Thermaltake A2397 Silver River aluminum external enclosure. The silver aluminum casing acts as a heatsink, to keep the hard drive cool during operation and help dissipate heat quickly when you’re done. No fans mean less noise in your work environment.

Once you've installed a hard drive inside this slim enclosure (it measures 5.04" x 3.11" x 0.64"), you simply connect the bundled USB-to-USB cable between the drive and your computer. There's no external power necessary, either, since the drive gets its power from your computer. There's even a power switch on the drive to let you shut it down and keep it from using your laptop’s battery—something you won't find on many portable units this size.

A full manual and user guide is included, as is a leather wallet to store the drive in while it's not in use and all the tools necessary to install a drive.

  • newegg Supports 2.5-inch Hard Drives The Thermaltake A2397 external enclosure provides broad compatibility with all standard 2.5-inch 9.5mm IDE hard drives to enable capacities of up to 80 GB or even more!
  • newegg USB 2.0 Interface The USB 2.0 interface enables high data transfer speeds of up to 480Mbps so you save time while copying or moving data. Support for plug-and-play significantly decreases the need for driver installations (Windows 2000/XP or above editions of OS).

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Good Designed case, attractive without being too flashy or gawdy. Nice carrying case.

Cons: Requires two USB cables to work, not one. The manual says otherwise, but Thermaltake US tech support says it requires two. I have another similar product on my desk that I paid five bucks for and it only requires one.

Other Thoughts: External USB laptop based HDs should only require one USB connector unless the USB port is not powered. I am disappointed in this unit. This thing should be labeled that it requires two USB cables to operate.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fine for me

Pros: Fast transfer, maybe 5x as fast as a usb flash drive, no drivers needed. Copied 4g/b in under 4 minutes, with my jump drive its about 4 minutes for 1g/b. And Im using a old 20g/b drive.I would expect faster results with a newer drive. I used it on 3 computers so far ranging from an older celeron(socket 370, with usb2 add on card) to athlon xp to kind of new sempron. On each on it only took 5 seconds to find it the first time and open it up.

Cons: They should include a external power supply. If you dont have a powered usb hub you could have problems getting it to work.

Other Thoughts: If you dont overtighten the screws they dont strip. The people who had trouble are using a drive that exceeded how much power a usb port can put out.Thats not thermaltake's fault, you shold look up your drive specs.

4 out of 5 eggsFor 11 bucks its worth a try...

Pros: It's cheap and it works. It is especially useful if you happen to have an extra laptop hard drive. It's nice and small and looks cool with blue leds and Aluminum, which is good for cooling. Its usb 2.0 and it comes with everything you need. Easy install; no drivers needed. I formated and partitioned it with VCOM's Partition Commander 9.

Cons: The usb cable that it comes is a "Y" cable. That is, you need two usb ports to power it. However, the cables could be a little longer--I had to use an additional usb extension cable for my laptop (luckily I had one). It rattles a bit when moved so I put some silicon ear putty inside and now it does not rattle.

Other Thoughts: I think the other two reviewers just had bad experiences. It comes with an extra set of screws--but just be careful not to over tighten. Also use a longer screwdriver than the one they give you. Really for xx its worth it in my opinion. I paid xx bucks at Rxxxo Sxxxk but am still happy. Good luck.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Low cost, looks nice, and I like the Blue LED face plate. It's a sharp looking unit and it works as advertised. Transfer speed is good, it comes with the cables, software, and even a small screwdriver to help you put it together.

Cons: It does feel a bit flimsy. The drive moves around inside the enclosure a bit more then it should. The small screws that hold the back plate in place are a poor design. Swapping drives in and out is not easy to do.

Other Thoughts: As stated in a previous review, if you have one 2.5" HD that you want to just leave in it.. then this is a solid unit. If you have several drives that you want to swap in and out, this is not the unit for you. The construction makes swapping out drives cumbersome and difficult. For people that have one drive to leave in it all the time.. it's a solid buy.

4 out of 5 eggsIts alright

Pros: Its is very light aluminium, sleek and almost stylish (if geeks could be stylish). Drive installed easily. Good transfer rate too, since its USB 2.0

Cons: The screws are definitly too short, but if you only unscrew the one side to slide the board out you will have no problem.

Other Thoughts: Overall, if you plan on putting one drive in this and never taking it out again, your good. If you plan on constantly putting different drives in it, I would go for somthing else.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks for me

Pros: Keeps drives nice and cool, easy to use, driverless with windows xp and USB Y-cable to supply power.

Cons: If you decide to format the drive with anything other than FAT32 you have to put it in something else first, format it, and then put it back in this enclosure.

Other Thoughts: This works well, I have had some problems copying large numbers of files with varying directory depths to the drive at one time (I put a 40GB HD in it) but I can use it with backup software.

2 out of 5 eggsWould not buy again

Pros: I love the size, color and weight of the enclosure. It was easy to setup and install hard drive. I like the USB to USB connection cable with secondary USB power attachment. And the enclosure always seem to run the harddrive relatively cool.

Cons: The screws to secure the enclosure were too short and did not tighten well. Two of the screws just keep spinning when tightening and eventually all but one of the screws fell out. I am unable to keep the front of the enclosure on and the bak is hanging on with one screw.

Other Thoughts: I'm not happy that I wasted money on basically a good enclosure with very poorly designed screw fasteners. If you can find bigger screws then buy this, otherwise buy the new Axxxtec 2.5" USB 2.0 enclosure that I just bought at Bxxt Bxy. It's a better enclosure and if I don't like it, I don't have the hassle of having to mail it back to the manufacturer.

Pros: look else where this was a dud right out of the box. A big hunk of burning junk!

Cons: Junk Junk! You will be sorry if you purchase this. I am just glad my drive worked in my laptop after this device failed me!

3 out of 5 eggsonly for 9mm drives

Pros: it's a great small enclosure.

Cons: it does not fit every 2.5" drive. i specifically bought this for a 12mm height drive because the literature said that it fit all 2.5" drives. it only fits 9mm drives. the screws securing the drive board cover and back cover are metal, but the material they secure is plastic. easy to strip. i'll keep it though.
